Mostly for the influx of Jazz "admirers," but maybe even a real fan or two, too.

Let's talk offseason.

The Jazz have six guaranteed contracts for 2014 (officially five, but Marvin Williams has a player option that he has to accept after just having Achilles surgery):

Alec Burks ($2,323,200)
Jeremy Evans ($1,660,000)
Derrick Favors ($6,008,106)
Gordon Hayward ($3,452,183)
Enes Kanter ($4,753,320)
Williams ($7,500,000)

Total: $25,696,809

Non-guaranteed:

Kevin Murphy ($788,872)

Free agents:

DeMarre Carroll
Randy Foye
Al Jefferson
Paul Millsap
Jamaal Tinsley
Earl Watson
Mo Williams

Draft picks:

14th overall
21st overall
46th overall

Draft workouts (so far):

Steven Adams
Vander Blue
Lorenzo Brown
Reggie Bullock
Jack Cooley
Solomon Hill
Richard Howell
Pierre Jackson
Kenny Kadji
Shane Larkin
Amath M'Baye
Trevor Mbakwe
Tony Mitchell
Glen Rice Jr.
Dennis Schroeder
Peyton Siva
Malik Story
Cody Zeller

Go.

You take 2 pieces at 14-21, or try to package those into a top 8-10 pick and grab one guy to join the rest of their youth?

They gonna have 6-7 guys all under 26 here pretty soon, with 25 mil on the books only, that's a helluva nice start to building a roster, but how can they ever attact any free agent? They need someone to be willing to move to SLC and join up with that core, and I have no idea who that guy could be.

They really lucked into Karl and Stock back in the day, need something similar to happen again.

Just wanted the first post to be neutral, so:

If it were up to me, only Millsap and Carroll would get re-signed, and Schroeder would be the target at 14 (or even if they have to trade up a few spots). Hate that they won't be able to move Ma. Williams now.

Also, I expect Evans to be a player that people know for more than just being in a dunk contest next season. Big fan.

Edit: Oh, and speaking of Karl Malone, they brought him in to work with Favors and Kanter.

Personally, I am all in on Schroeder. Oladipo, Burke and McCollum should all be gone by 8-10, and I can't really see them moving up for anyone else.

That's the worry, right? They need someone, but it won't be a star, and it can't be spending just to spend. Throwing $40 million at someone like Brandon Jennings or Kevin Martin would be a mistake.

The Jazz figure to have about $30-33 million in cap this summer, but keep in mind Favors and Hayward are eligible for extensions this summer. I imagine they'll each get at least between $9-10 million each per, if not more. Then Kanter will be eligible next summer. Burks too, but he's expendable.

Just on the fact that Jeremy Evans hasn't proven anything yet.... my middle-class self shudders at him making a check for 1,600,000 US dollars this upcoming season.

He'll more than earn it with the extended playing time, though. He is Stromile Swift-like, so I love him. Birdman production: 6, 8 and 2 blocks in 18 minutes kind of !+%*.

Well, if they stay building this the right way, they don't need to pay for a tier 1 guy, just need a couple tier 2 types to join up with their young core.

With the rate they are going, developing, etc, having 6-7-8 young rotational guys that grow together will get them close enough to playoff contention, get someone to come in reasonably, like you said, no 40 mil deals, and they should be fine. All of it depends on developing their guys. Can't have anyone regress or serious injuries, etc.

I would imagine that someone would sign up if the roster was fully stocked and that player just wanted to fit in, not cash in. If that makes sense.

I am operating under the mindset that Burks doesn't turn into much, so I think they'll need to address both guard positions soon.

Besides the draft, I would look into trading for Jeremy Lamb and/or Eric Bledsoe. They have Burks and two firsts to move, maybe Jefferson in a sign-and-trade?, and the ability to take on money.

I think Lamb is a surefire 18+-point scorer who shoots pretty efficiently, rebounds well and is an excellent defender when he wants to be (think a better-shooting Rudy Gay), so I would push for him hard if I was any team (and would have ever since he got traded to Oklahoma City).

Schroeder/Bledsoe
Lamb
Hayward
Favors (or Millsap if they re-sign him)
Kanter

Going forward, that would look really good to me. But I think I probably expect more from Hayward than most people.

Ball-pushing and ball-stopping point guard
A pair of 18-20 point, all-around wings (and Hayward can run the offense on occasion)
An elite-defending big who rebounds
A monstrous, versatile-scoring big who rebounds

I don't know how far that eventually gets you, and you still have a whole bench to fill out, but that feels like a perfectly balanced starting lineup (besides the fact that they're all kids right now).

CJ would be a dream come true.

Schroeder far more likely.

PG is the one weak link stopping this team from competiting in the playoffs perennially.

Doesn't OKC have plans for Lamb tho?

Wait, but you are giving them Jefferson, someone legit over Perkins........

Hmmmm, they'd have to get rid of Perk then. Too much money at that point, I don't get the feeling that OKC wants to spend much more outside this core they put together.

Jazz don't take Perkins back, do they? Even with cap space, I can't see them parking him on the bench even if it meant getting Lamb. Maybe something in there that could work out, Burks goin back to OKC or somethin, I dunno.

I've always liked your idea of Bledsoe running them, that sounds like a real solid fit.

I'm all about Schroeder with one of the picks. I would like to keep Millsap cause I dont think Kanter is quite ready to step in as a Starter. In my 10 years on NT im pretty sure this is the first Jazz thread ever

I was hoping you would see this.

Jefferson sign-and-trade (~$15 million per) for Lamb, Collison and Perkins ($13,174,265)? Maybe involve Burks and/or pick-swapping (the Jazz have 14, 21 and 46; the Thunder have 12, 29 and 32).

I would probably take Perkins back if I was them. Only two years left now. Try and flip him next season.

Verdykt, how do you feel about Burks?

See, if I was going to give you Perk, you couldn't have Collison too. Unless the pick swap was heavy in my favor. Like 21 for 32.

Al Jeff and 3 firsts along with Burks, then I could see it, but I don't see why you'd want that if you're the Jazz.

What about Affalo? Do you like him at all? I like him alot, he would fit your needs, the Magic can flip him, his contract isn't "terrible" although a bit spendy, but certainly fits under your cap. Not sure what ORLD takes from you yet, but I've always like Affalo's game.

Adding Collison or Sefolosha is the only thing that works, money-wise. That's why. But Jefferson is, by far, the most valuable piece in the deal. And taking back Perkins? Don't see why Collison would be a dealbreaker.

And Afflalo is one of my least favorite players in the league.

Too much of a dependent player for the Jazz, anyway. They need a guard that can create offense on his own, not stand tucked away behind the arc. And not named Mo Williams.

Well nevermind the Affalo question then.

Collison is one of their glue guys. And I don't know if Jeff/Ibaka works, what their depth would look like, etc. It's why I'd want to be sure the picks line up in my favor if I'm OKC. I know they get the best player in the deal, and rid of the worst contract, but that #3 big man is much needed. I suppose it's not enough to stop them, and don't want to let Thabo go instead, so yeah that'd have to work then. Hope I could land a suitable big at 12 then.

I like Burks. i think he still has lots to improve on, im not willing to give him up just yet. I like his confidence and ability to finish at the rim. I don;t think he is as good a ball handler as he seems to think he is though. But the more the ball is out of Watson's hands the better I suppose

I think the lack of a legitimate starting PG (true ball handler) has stunted Burks' growth. Forcing him to play out of position at times and creating discomfort on the court.

Amen brother. I really hope we can get a good pg. i keep seeing shane larkin or Dennis Schroeder in mocks for us.

Kev's world...where Stromile Swift like is a good thing and Gordon Hayward is a superstar

If I'm them I either sign Bledsoe (big believer in him being able to be a starting PG) or go hard to get Schroder. For the 21st pick if I am them I look into taking Ricky Ledo. If your a team like Utah cause of the inability to attract free agents, you have to occasionally reach for the stars with a pick. Ledo has really good size for the two spot and for someone who is a headcase being in Utah with a strong foundation and other good young character guys is an ideal space for him to develop.

I would like to see:

PG: Bledsoe/Larkin
SG: Burks/Ledo
SF: Hayward/Evans
PF: Favors
C: Kanter

Come of free agents to fill out the rest of the squad. Re-sign Millsap if you can get a David West deal for him cause that's a piece you can always move.

Hey, people said the same thing to me about Bird like seven years ago, too. Turns out high-energy guys that run around dunking, rebounding and blocking/altering everything are pretty useful.

They were trying to make Evans a small forward because he couldn't get on the floor behind Millsap/Jefferson/Kanter/Favors, but I don't see that experiment continuing. He does have a pretty fluid jumper, though.

Too much free agency politics and pecking order prevented him from doing it this past season.
