The UTAH JAZZ Support Group thread: Majorly updated.

I mentioned Andre Miller the other day, and it turns out the Nuggets are trying to move him. Love the potential fit to help Burke and give the team some kind of veteran presence for a year or two.

My best guess at the levels of interest in bringing back free agents from what I've read:

Jefferson - none
Millsap - high
Williams - moderate
Foye - ? (literally have seen nothing about him yet)
Carroll - high
Watson - none
Tinsley - moderate

last year david stockton played in summer league and now michael? *been a fan of utah since stockton era*

i hope utah will get better this season since Jerry sloan back in organization (even only as consultant)

To Utah: Andris Biedrins, Richard Jefferson, Brandon Rush, a 2014 first-found pick, a 2017 first-round pick and multiple future second-round picks

To Golden State: Kevin Murphy

Also, they renounced their rights to Millsap, so he is officially gone.

Kanter/Biedrins/Gobert
Favors/Evans
Hayward/Williams/Jefferson
Rush/Burks
Burke

This deal and signing the draft picks would get them over the minimum cap, somewhere around $51 million.

Biedrins, Jefferson and Rush all come off the books after this season ($24 million), and while the 2014 pick certainly shouldn't be lottery, it's fine to add to the one they already have that should be.

Not a fun deal, but a productive one. As nice as it was to think about playing five 23-and-unders for 35 minutes a game, they needed to add some veteran presences. Not sure what it means for who might re-sign now, though.

Firmly in play for another top 3 pick. Which will be huge.
Then a mid 20's pick.

And a ton of cap space for next year. Solid.

Wasnt crazy about it when I first heard it. But the details and 2 unprotected picks is nice. There are few players I hate more than Richard Jefferson though, so that will be a tough pill to swallow

Cross Carroll off the list. He and Millsap are both headed to Atlanta.

They also renounced their rights to Williams today, which I missed originally. I don't understand how all that works, but the fallout is that they can only offer him $6 million max if they want to keep him now.

God, I hope they don't.

Copeland and Mayo are still the only two free agents that I have seen connected to the Jazz to date. Both signed elsewhere.

Yeah, this isn't a video game, as fun as it might be.. you can't have everyone play a full 36 minutes a game so having some vets will be helpful. Plus it helps meet the minimum without sacrificing future cap space. Solid.

can jefferson still play at all or will he just be a seat filler? Rush is decent pick up.

Seat, firmly. He hasn't been good in 3-4 years. If he plays 30 minutes a night, Jazz might as well start printing Wiggins face on their season tickets.

I only watched the highlights, but from what I saw Gobert is an alien.

I was undecided on how much I liked Rudy Gobert, but I think I would gladly take him late-lottery now. Really like the defensive instincts and mobility, paired with his length. He seems like he could have the rare knack of being able to step out and legitimately keep players in front of him, all while being an absolute nightmare in the paint. Plenty of guys can do it inside, almost none can do both (Chandler, Noah). I think there's a shot here. He's not the same athlete or as strong (for now) as those two, though.
Said that before the draft, and man, did it show up in this first game.

Super fluid and aware on the defensive end. When he bulks up a little bit up top, look out.

I was a little surprised about Favors and Kanter, too, but they are working out with Malone this summer. And Favors will be going with the national team soon.

Burks' ankle tweak in game one. >D

Instead of playing in the Orlando Pro Summer League like he has in years past, the second-highest-paid ex-Butler guy in the NBA took a spot on the Utah Jazz bench for Sunday's game.

"They promoted me to coach," Gordon Hayward said.

Don't worry, fans. He was joking.

Hayward will still be a Jazz wing this upcoming season, but he decided to swing down and attend the summer league in central Florida to meet his new teammates and support buddies Jeremy Evans and Alec Burks.

"We've got a young group of guys," Hayward said, "and I want to be a part of that — just to grow with them and see how they do."

The move — an appreciated one by Jazz management — makes it apparent that Hayward took it to heart when he was challenged to take on a bigger leadership role during exit interviews in April.

Hayward, now the longest-tenured Jazz player after Paul Millsap's announced departure to Atlanta, arrived Saturday and will be in Orlando with his team through Tuesday as he continues to prepare for the Team USA minicamp he'll participate in this month with teammate Derrick Favors.

"(It's) tremendous to see him here with his teammates," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "It's good for them to see and it's good for him to be around his teammates."

Turns out, Hayward also got the chance to be around his former coach, whose new team is also playing in Orlando this week. He laughed when asked about seeing Boston's new head coach, Brad Stevens, sporting a Celtics logo on his shirt.

"It was weird. I saw him sitting on the bench across from me, waved to him," Hayward said. "It's a heck of an opportunity for him. I'm extremely excited. I think it came out of left field kind of for everybody. … I went out to lunch with him (not long ago) and was talking about his team next year at Butler. Now he's in the NBA. It will be fun competing against him."

Stevens reportedly signed a six-year deal worth $22 million. Hayward will make $3.45 million in the final year of his rookie contract.
I'm feeling something like 20, 6, 5, 1 and 1 from him this season.

Update on the free agents:

Jefferson - signed with the Bobcats
Millsap - signed with the Hawks
Williams - rights renounced, but they can still offer him something
Foye - seems to be getting "traded" to the Nuggets in a three-team deal revolving around the Andre Iguodala signing (the Jazz will get a second-round pick back)
Carroll - signed with the Hawks
Tinsley - has talked to the Jazz and Nets
Watson - signed with the Blazers

I love the reality that none of them may return.

Also, I read that they made an offer to Dorrell Wright, but he signed with the Blazers.

Pretty sure Neto did more in the one quarter I've seen him play so far than Burke did in two games.

Evans looks good. I'm excited for him to get a better look this season.

Even in summer league, I just don't really see it with Burks.

John Lucas isn't exactly the kind of veteran point guard I had in mind. Another chucker. >D

Was out of town and didnt get to see much summer league. Burke sounded like he was awful. I know on the jazzfanz board theres a post about Schoreder killing it. Some are wishing we drafted him. Trey will get better. I hope evans can get some PT. He seems to like it in Utah and hes a crowd favorite

Hello. Just searched for a Jazz thread and noticed this.

Is it too late to join the support group? I'm really looking forward to seeing Kanter's progression this year with significantly increased minutes.

Nah. Welcome, man. I have a feeling this thread will be getting all kinds of unique traffic throughout the season. That's why I made it.

Forgot to mention that Neto is getting sent back to Spain. :rolleyes

@tribjazz Gordon Hayward a Day 1 standout, says @ESPNSteinLine. No real surprise. Was really active defensively in bit open to media. Shot well.
I hope you guys are ready to live in a world where one of the best players in the league looks like Opie Taylor, because that's happening real soon.

P has faith that Burke will turn things around and improve. For the sake of Utah lets hope so.

But I personally don't see him as their starting PG of the future. A little too "shoot-first" For my personal taste. They need a better creator badly.

I never liked him all that much to begin with. It was Schroder all the way for me.

I fully expect to Hayward to handle the ball a ton this season, and I am very much looking forward to that.
@tribjazz Favors has clearly added bulk, but says he’s about the same as his playing weight last year. Listed here at 248.
@tribjazz Favors said Malone tries to outwork him, but that they don't keep score in 1-on-1. Derrick did win a game of horse, though, he said.
@DJJazzyJody Derrick Favors said he's learned "mostly mental" aspects of basketball from Karl Malone in their occasional workouts.
