+++OFFICIAL JAY Z THREAD+++

Nah the hip hop community hasn't twisted the meaning of the word substance. When people refer to music with substance they are speaking of music with the subject matter of thought. Speaking of money and extravagance doesn't require the same level of thought as speaking on social ills. I mean anyone can brag about what they have or what they have done but it takes more to speak on an issue that affects many people.

I personally am not saying an artist HAS to speak on social ills. I enjoy some music with speaking about money and extravagance when it is well done by using great lyricism but when it is not and it lacks substance I call it for what it is. Just because you relate to something doesn't necessarily make that thing substantial.
They're not mutually exclusive. Jay finds a way to rap about having a lot of money, and living the extravagant life and still be on some socially conscious. Like Oceans, hes bragging a lot on that song about money, yet in a way that touches on serious issues. Or Somewhereinamerica, he brags about his accomplishments but touches on his influence and what's like to have that influence in society.

Why are people impressed by those numbers? That's about right. And that's not taking them lightly. I mean, they're great. It's just not...surprising.

Why are people buying an album basically given away away for free? Props tho

Ehh, I'm gonna guess some people didn't wanna go through the phone stuff to get it, and either they preferred to get it from itunes, or have a physical cd

So is J.Cole doing for Roc Nation what Memphis Bleek was supposed to for the ROC?? Plz respond. *continues listening to "Oh It's On"*

Jay my dude for real but l can't front the media machine and hype had to be the major push behind those big #s.

It's not like he had a swimming pools/don't kill my vibe or a power trip type song to move a half million people into the stores in 1 week.

I honestly like the album but I feel like it would've done well because of the hype and Hovs brand is almost bulletproof , it's like a bonus that it was actually a good album.

Dude normally does 400k, so add lp commercials during NBA Finals and primetime tv, and overall favorable reviews, you get that extra 128k

Yeah he usually does 400k with a single though, this joint came outta nowhere and blew the **** up.

Dude got the machine in his back pocket :smokin , I'm sure this success of the album sent a lot of people back to the marketing draw board.

No it didn't  he's Jay-Z which skews the results right there.

why are yall looking for explanations of the numbers. hes jay z lol. hes in the topmost upper echelon of rappers. hes in the small group that can put out ANYTHING and itll go plat. him, drake, wayne... thats about it. jayz could literally put out a blank album and the only sound on it would be a cough on track 4. theyd just call it genius-level art. his name carries weight.

Jay took into account all of the people who were going to download it for free anyway, and found a way to get paid off of them(Samsung)

Then the people who actually buy albums still did it the traditional way.

Genius

Because I still support artist and good music, even though I download

Purchased Jay, Wale and J Cole over the past month. I grew up going to stores on Tuesday for tapes and CD's.
