Source: Rajon Rondo will not demand trade from Celtics

If there were any indication that Celtics team president Danny Ainge was planning on putting together an intentionally bad team next year, it would be evidenced by the way he handles point guard Rajon Rondo who, strange as it may be to say, is not only the sole remaining link to the ’08 championship team, but also the ’10 Finals team.

A source told Sporting News on Monday that, while Ainge gets calls on Rondo regularly, he has no intention of trading him, but rather, wants to see how Rondo operates as the team leader without Pierce and Garnett around.

As one opposing general manager put it, “I don’t think Danny has made a single call about Rondo. He has gotten calls. But it would be wrong to say he has considered shopping him.”

And Rondo is perfectly happy to be part of the Celtics going forward. He has not issued a trade demand or a request or even so much as a trade inquiry, a source told Sporting News. He has no incentive to do so. In fact, Rondo welcomes the challenge of taking over the new-look Celtics, however things might pan out.

Though he only played 38 games for the Celtics last season, Rondo did technically lead the league in assists, with 11.1 per game, his second straight year as the league leader and his third straight season with an average of at least 11 assists.

But Rondo is coming back from an ACL injury, and is expected to miss the start of the season. Even when he does come back, he might not be quite himself from the get-go—very often, players need more than a year to fully get comfortable with a surgically repaired knee. Part of the goal of next year for Rondo, then, will be making his way back to 100 percent.

After that, Rondo will go into 2014-’15 at 28 years old and looking at the final year of his contract. Assuming he is fully healthy and running the show for a younger, more up-tempo team, he is likely to put up good numbers heading into his free agency.

And, although Rondo is the last remaining pillar from their title season, the Celtics do not plan to become a below-average team.

Ainge met the media on Monday for the second time in a week, and much like last week, he had little choice but to discuss the departure of future Hall of Famers. Where last week it was coach Doc Rivers, this week it was Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

Ainge couldn’t discuss the deal that would send those two to Brooklyn directly—the trade becomes official on July 10—but he did address the notion that he was planning to tank the coming season in order to gain a more favorable place in next year’s draft, which is expected to be stacked with talent.

“We are not tanking,” Ainge said. “That’s ridiculous. This is the Boston Celtics.”

Ainge had little choice but to trade Pierce and Garnett, and get what he could for them in return. But when it comes to Rondo, he is not looking to unload, not looking to give up talent in order to intentionally be bad next year. And Rondo is not looking to get out, either.

But why did Forman fire Thibs top assistant Ron Adams?

Seems very very puzzling.

Because hes an idiot. Adams got along with our top 3 coach and our franchise player and Gar got rid of him. We have the worst front office in the league smh

^ if the spurs were smart they should have signed dunleavy. he would be a manu replacement on a cheap contract

i think everyone going to look back on howard career i say that stan van gundy was a very good coach. Hoawrd will never win anything for the rest of his career trying to be the number one option.

Yeah that seems to be the consensus.

That Snell pick was glorious though. He will be great under Thibs.

Peter Vescey just said on twitter that Andray Blatche cancelled all his meetings with teams and will make commitment to Nets

Stan van gundy is a great coach but for you to say Howard won't win anything is dumb. He took a bunch of role players to the finals. Yeah he cries like a female but he can be so dominating.

dwight getting a tv deal with time warner? something about that dont sound right. nets might as well schedule a meeting with dwight and offer him ownership in prokhs oil company
