It's Nubuck, not suede.
The shape just looks totally off to me. I loved these shoes when they first came out, especially the white and blue whites. I loved the concept of the design

Exactly.
I love the fact that they basically took the iconic 1 and modernized it. Kept the "wing", the air, updated the tread pattern. Looks like a completely different shoe but still has a lot of the 1s subtle elements
