The Worlds's Ten Worst Public Transit Systems

I ride the detroit people mover every morning. **** is just a big circle literally, maybe 25 min long.

3500 deaths a year? WTF?

DC metro is fine by me.
yeaaa DC isnt so bad i just hate the "more expensive, the longer you ride" aspect. wish it was a flat rate like NYC or Chicago...riding at peak hours can be like $7 a day depending on how far you go

cant really complain about the buses though...$1.60 flat rate for metrobus and Moco ride on buses.

Baton Rouge Louisiana has THE WORST transit system in the damn world.

When I was at LSU the damn bus driver would straight up not stop at the bus stop on his damn route sometimes when he was having a bad day. Like straight up pass me up and ice grill me status. >: Some hating *** transit workers. :smh:

Besides that it would take hours in transfers and **** to get down the damn street.

In theory it should be getting better since the area voted an overhaul and expansion of the system. We'll see though, I'm a big supporter of getting less people on the road in the BR area though.

Obviously the author of this article has never been to West Palm Beach let alone South Florida because the public transportation down here is easily top 5 worst ever. the Palm tran is way too slow, ( you could pass a bus stop with people waiting then pass the same bus stop 2 hours later and still see the same people waiting for the bus. plus if you want to go somewhere that usually take 20 mins by car, it will take you at least 4 HOURS if you take the palm tran. yeah it's that bad), and the tri rail is a absolute joke. and I heard that broward county and dade county is no better when it comes to public transportation. so basically if you ain't got a car in Florida, you're pretty much stuck where you at.

Why does Boston suck? I just had an interview in Boston and everyone there said they take public transportation to work.

A flat rate? Sound foreign to me. Spending $6-$8 just to get down town is a B tho.

But $1.60 for the metrobus/ride on for 2 hours sounds reasonable.

and i thought bart was bad good thing its not on the list now even though there on strike now

Add charlotte to the list. the lynx is trash and the bus system is terrible and these clowns at the city level want to implement a street car..? In 2013?

what kind of or rather who do they have in office right now? Obviously this person had never been in a real city in their lives and actually used actual mass transit. The lynx and a street car are just toys to the wealthy to make them feel good about their suburban small to mid sized at best city that will never live up to its potential due to ppl blocking any real progressive moves people in this city want to make.

I've been a tourist to a majority of the cities in this list and I agree completely. I would put LA a lot higher though. You can't get anywhere decent without a car out there

The public transportation in Memphis is by far worse than Atlanta or New Orleans. There is no subway system and it is a bigger city than both of those other cities.
You do realize that "city borders" are not a reliable indicator of how large a city is, right? City boundaries are created for municipal purposes only. Metro population numbers are far more accurate in describing a city's size. A metro area describes the entire extent of a city's influence including continual urban populations and economic infrastructure. Memphis is not a larger city than Atlanta. For instance, Memphis determines its city border extends 324 sq. mi. into its metro area with a population of 672,567 people. Atlanta determines its city border extends 131.8 sq. mi. into its metro area with a population of 443,775 people. As you can see, Memphis has portioned its artificial "city border" to cover more of it's metro land area than Atlanta has. Thus, inflating Memphis' perceived city population size. Furthermore, Metro Atlanta covers an area of 8,376 sq. mi. with a population of 5,457,831 people. Metro Memphis covers an area of 3013 sq. mi. with a population of 1,305,946 people. As you can see, the actual city of Memphis is only a fraction of the size of Atlanta. Considering how many people in Atlanta are underserved by public transit compared to Memphis, Memphis does not have worse public transit than Atlanta.

Ironically, the Mayor of Charlotte (Anthony Foxx) was just appointed to be the US Secretary of Transportation.

Only legit part of the MARTA fault is that it shuts down too early. If it was 24 hours itd be great

unreliable. closes super early. constant construction. perpetually delayed or shut down due to weather.

same with philly also. at least with the super early closing.

if bars let out at 130am/2am, it makes absolutely no sense to close trains at 1230. this encourages people resorting to drunk driving and costs people money to take a cab for distances a train can cover in no time at all for cheap. seriously boston and greater boston is small as ****, a train ride around NY at night takes way longer.

i can't believe the MBTA is broke to the point where they can't cover an extra 2 hrs for the purposes of city safety. :smh: i mean this is common sense. its bad enough boston doesn't have much of a nightlife, but when i do end up going out, id like the option of taking a train over a cab.

lowkey rant aside, the construction issue sucks because its a one line system. trains cant be transferred to another track to bypass construction.

from my experience the T is much easier to ride than NYC...when u got a sick passenger, the entire tunnel is held up from queens to manhattan. and your *** could be stuck in that packed train for 45min.

:smh: :x that feel. only in ny.

Toronto is as terrible as described. If you live outside of downtown, good luck.

Toronto's transit is

......but on the other hand Montreal's tranist system is

it's not THAT bad, but I don't use the TTC much. Only use the subway getting to DT, and it's always no problem.

Ppl who use it often, complain about how they're not on time, however - on a frequent basis.

The expansion to York University will help out a lot.... and then maybe the plan to build a subway to the airport may finally come to fruition.

The article about the politics behind the TTC is correct though.

where are you from?

bring your car if you move here or be prepared to buy one soon after. the bus system is wack. in most instances you have to go downtown before you can change buses to get to wherever it is you really need to go. they aren't reliable and in certain areas (like if you're going to matthews or coming from matthews) depending on your race they can and will pass right by you.

unfortunately, i have stories for days.:smh: i had to call and complain several times because of that...even had an instance where the bus stopped and the driver put his hand over where you put your dollars/change in and said, "you know this bus isn't going uptown, right?" after i got on. :smh::rolleyes

just because i was going to matthews. fyi matthews is predominately white. its where i lived at that time and i flatly told him that.

and that incident happened after the bus passed me by several times after getting off of work. i would get off of work and have to wait for it for like an hour, literally, only for it to come and pass me by because the drivers assumed that because i was black i was waiting for another bus.:smh:

when i moved from matthews to charlotte (they use the same bus system fyi) it didn't get much better. many drivers have attitudes and treat you like they're doing you a favor IMHO because down here using transit to get around is looked down upon. its not like ny (where i'm from) where any and everybody uses it. the havenots mostly use it or the ppl that park and ride (these ppl usually use the express buses tho).

thats why i said what i said before. the lynx, which is the light rail system and this street car ******** they're working on now are pet projects for and from the wealthy. they aren't beneficial to the masses. they're there for ppl from out of town that stop by every now and then and there to make the upperclass feel good about whatever. these ppl don't usually ride public transportation at all and you can tell.

real quick, i have money...i have a decent job in the corporate world. i can definitely afford a car but i didn't want to "get stuck" down here. i always wanted to go back home so i didn't buy a car until recently. i'll figure out what to do with it when i make my move to wherever i'm going next if its anything like ny where i don't need or want one.

as far as the lynx tho, the city ran out of money and never completed it. thats right, its not completed and they have started working on a street car.:smh:
the lynx is two cars a train but they usually run one car. it doesn't go very far and doesn't service a lot of people that could actually use it. its pretty much for ppl that want to park and ride that don't need transit. and the ridership isn't what it could be. both the bus and the train shut down at a certain time.

as a city, charlotte has potential but who wants to be 62 before its realized? if you are into bars and food then charlotte might be cool but what city doesn't have bars and restaurants or clubs? your time and money are better spent elsewhere IMO. charlotte has so much potential but these upper class ppl in power block it. there is no reason a city this size with a population this size should look and feel like this. this isn't to down charlotte but its frustrating.

/end rant

you need to know before you make that move tho.

I seriously thought Los Angeles would be number 1. Our public transportation sucks. Just to give you guys an idea. For a trip that would take me 15-20 minutes in a car. That same trip would take me 3 buses and an hour and 15 minutes taking the LA metro.

Easy pass
