*2013 NFC North Trash Talk Thread™ ® --> Lions Hire Jim Caldwell as Head Coach.

....by far the most overrated division on this board.

Only team that's a factor this year is the Packers and that's by default.

I was going to refrain from posting here but I just wanted to point out that the Cowboys are 1-7 versus the NFC North since 2009 and actually haven't won a game VS the North in two years.

Alright Tony Reali, what's the Lions franchise playoff record if you don't me asking?

You know, where **** actually matters...

Same as the Cowboys the last 15 years.

You're added SJ. You post a healthy amount around football season, those lists are mostly copied & pasted from the 2009 & 2010 trash talk threads.

Pretty sure I'm a Bears fan.....

You've been on there for years old man. Look HARDER.

11-5 SJ? That's funny. My friend told me that Paul Allen was on the radio again here in Seattle and he was saying he thinks the Vikes go 11-5 because they will go undefeated at home. Being that it's the last year in the Dome, he things they go out with a bang.

He also told Softy (radio host) that AP is the real beast mode. :pimp: I think we can agree that AP is well beyond being just a beast though.

Seattle Paul Allen I'm assuming?

Even though they don't play any of the league's elites there, they won't go undefeated at home.

Nah...Actually I assumed it to be Minnesota's Paul Allen when he told me, but you had me second guessing. It was Vikings Allen. I don't think Seattle Paul Allen would be so favorable for the Vikings over Seattle.

I was surprised when he told me, but I guess the Minnesota-Seattle connection over the years have brought these guys closer or something.

Lions release concussion-plagued Jahvid Best

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 17, 2013, 4:14 PM EDT

No one questioned running back Jahvid Best’s ability when he was well. But the Lions could no longer wait on that to happen.

The team announced they were cutting the 2010 first-round pick Wednesday, putting a sad end to a career cut short by concussions.

One of the Lions biggest on-field problems last year was putting too much faith in Best’s ability to return from those problems. He was effectively replaced this offseason when they signed Reggie Bush, and while they kept holding out hope he could return, that clearance never came.

“I want to thank the Detroit Lions organization for drafting me and giving me an opportunity to fulfill my dream and play in the National Football League,” Best said in a statement released by the team. “My time as a member of the Lions was a very special time in my life. My teammates, the members of the organization, the Lions fans and the people of Detroit will hold a special place in my heart. I’ll always be a Lion.”

Best played in just 22 NFL games, and none since October 2011.

Greg Jennings: Christian Ponder hasn’t really had the help he’s needed

Posted by Josh Alper on July 16, 2013, 4:15 PM EDT

Greg Jennings has been asked plenty of times about the differences between the quarterbacks he played with in Green Bay and the one he’ll play with in Minnesota after signing with the Vikings as a free agent this offseason and he was asked about it again during an appearance on ESPN on Tuesday.

Stephen A. Smith started off the interview with a question about why Jennings made a choice to go from playing with Aaron Rodgers to playing with Christian Ponder. Jennings explained there was more to the decision than the fact that Ponder wasn’t on the same level as the two Packer quarterbacks. Eventually, as Smith kept hammering away at the point, Jennings said that quarterbacks need time to develop and that attention had to be paid to the team around them.

“Brett Favre, receivers around him. Aaron Rodgers, receivers around him. Christian Ponder, receivers around him,” Jennings said. “He [Ponder] has always been in a position where the stress and pressure was on him. He really didn’t have the help around him to take that load off, outside of ‘All Day’ [running back Adrian Peterson].”

Percy Harvin would likely have a different opinion, but there’s no question that the Vikings went after targets for Ponder this offseason after they dealt Harvin to Seattle. They drafted Cordarrelle Patterson in the first round to go with Jennings and brought back Jerome Simpson in hopes that he’s healthier and more productive in a second season with the Vikings.

Jennings is the leader of that group, so his nod toward the importance of the supporting cast could blow back on him if things don’t develop as hoped for the Vikings offense this year. Any struggles are more likely to reflect poorly on Ponder, though. It’s the nature of being a quarterback in the NFL and it’s especially the case for one that Jennings said there should be questions about heading into the 2013 season.

Cutler says he’s not distracted by contract talk

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 17, 2013, 7:46 AM EDT

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said the lack of a contract extension entering the final year of his deal won’t be a distraction, or much of a topic of conversation.

Cutler told ESPN Chicago 1000 it was barely on his mind at all.

“I haven’t thought about it in a while, actually,” Cutler said. “I’ll probably address it once in training camp, once before the season and that’s kind of it. I’m not going to talk about it.

“That stuff takes care of itself. As long as we’re winning football games and I’m playing well, hopefully they keep me around. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll see how it plays out. I’m not going to be distracted by it. I can’t worry about it. I’ve been in this league long enough. I’ve seen guys come and guys go. It will work out the way it’s supposed to work out.”

Of course, there had been talks about a new deal for Cutler, prior to the hiring of head coach Marc Trestman this offseason. But now, Cutler’s going to have to prove his worth to a new boss, and said the early returns are positive.

“It’s been good,” Cutler said of learning Trestman. “We’ve had a good relationship, a good base. It’s going to grow from here. But he’s an offensive guy, he understands the quarterback position, he understands the pressure we’re under, he understands how to make it easier for us. He’ll hold everybody accountable, not just offensively, but defensively he goes and meets with those guys.

“He’s just change. We have a lot of change around that building, so it’s not always a bad thing. So guys have to adapt to it and go with the flow and figure things out on the run.”

So will the Bears, if they enjoy success this year and watch Cutler reach the free agent market.

Charles Tillman: Bears in win-now mode

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 17, 2013, 2:20 PM EDT

Like a lot of Bears, Charles Tillman’s entering the final year of his contract.

But the veteran cornerback said his mindset hasn’t changed because of it, and his goals remain the same.

“Just to make plays and help this team win and try to get us a parade down Michigan Avenue, . . . that’s the mindset that I have, whether this is my last year or whether I have three years left on my contract,” Tillman said, via Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune. “It’s all the same. We just want to win a Super Bowl. At the end of the day, that’s what it is about.

“That’s how I am approaching this season. [General Manager] Phil Emery made the decision to hire a new coach so this coach could take us in the direction. My role as a player is to buy into that system and do whatever I can to help this team to win a Super Bowl. I think myself and the rest of the players have bought into coach [Marc] Trestman’s scheme and his system and we want to win and we want to win now. We’re not in a rebuild mode. We don’t have time to rebuild. We’re in the winning now business. The win RIGHT now business.”

With so many high-level contracts up, including quarterback Jay Cutler and franchise-tagged defensive tackle Henry Melton, the Bears are in an interesting spot. All of those deals are ones that Emery and Trestman inherited, and if the Bears don’t win right now, the organization might decide to part ways with a lot of veterans.

They already made one calculated business decision with linebacker Brian Urlacher this offseason, and if the results don’t come, that’s not a good sign for any of the long-time Bears looking for new deals.

As for Jennings comments, I sort of disagree. Ponder has had Percy and Kyle Rudolph on his team during his maturation process. Just think about that, Percy and Rudolph. You can't ask for much more if you're a young quarterback in this league.

11-5 SJ? That's funny. My friend told me that Paul Allen was on the radio again here in Seattle and he was saying he thinks the Vikes go 11-5 because they will go undefeated at home. Being that it's the last year in the Dome, he things they go out with a bang.

I feel the same way that we will go undefeated at home. We gonna steal a couple of road games as well. i truly believe out defensive will keep us in a lot of games. as far as the greg jennings statement i can somewhat agree because when we play Green bay at Lambeau field. Ponder just didnt have no targets.

Hopefully Best just retires and doesn't risk himself to anymore damage, he was a very good Lion when he was on the field. What could have been...

Lawd!!! I am hoping CP,Rhodes and Sheriff have soild season. I am expecting Xavier Rhodes to come in and make an immediate impact.

Xavier indeed should step right in and be a factor. I think Cordarelle will have a monstrous impact on the return game initially. I don't know how much overall success he'll have as a receiver in year one, but I feel almost certain that not only will he return his first kickoff for a TD, but he'll lead the league in return TD's. Book it!

Shariff will take some growing as well, but will definitely be a depth play while he gets better as the year moves along.

i been hearing that CP is ahead as far as learning the WR position. i hoping he been similar to Devin Hester in the return game or better. He will def make an impact. As for as sheriff, on a bright note. At least we have a replacement for Kwill when he leave
