DC Studios THREAD - GunnVerse Begins - Chapter ONE: Gods & Monsters

Jake Gyllenhaal Eyed to Replace Tom Hardy in David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’

Jake Gyllenhaal may not have received an Oscar nomination for “Nightcrawler” on Thursday but he could still end the day with a win, as David Ayer is courting his “End of Watch” star to replace Tom Hardy as Rick Flag in “Suicide Squad,” an individual familiar with the comic book project has told TheWrap.

Warner Bros. had no comment, while a representative for Gyllenhaal didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hardy was forced to exit the project because Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “The Revenant” is going over schedule into mid-March, after which Hardy will be needed to promote WB’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
I can dig it. I think Gyllenhaal is highly overlooked and his film choices in the past 10 years have been solid.

After watching Nightcrawler when it dropped I was convinced JG would have been a dope Joker.

Report: Tom Hardy Left DC's "Suicide Squad" Movie Over Script & Screentime

Announced to much fanfare with a full cast in place this December, Warner Bros. DC Entertainment adaptation "Suicide Squad" has had some small growing pains. Now a report is claiming that the loss of one star came as a result of the final script for the film not meeting his expectations.

Latino Review has a story up today claiming that the reason actor Tom Hardy walked from the incoming David Ayer-directed movie was because he had not seen a finished script when he originally agreed to play Rick Flag. Once the full cast was assembled – including new Joker/Oscar-winner Jared Leto and superstar Will Smith as Deadshot – the script was tweaked to play to those bigger parts and Hardy apparently wasn't interested in their version of the story where Flag served as a supporting player.

Immediately after Hardy quit the part this week, reports surfaced that Jake Gyllenhaal is being eyed to fill the Rick Flag role in the DC supervillain team-up movie. If he does, he'll join Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang and Cara Delevigne as Enchantress. Additionally, "Batman v Superman's" Lex Luthor Jesse Eisenberg is still rumored to be connected to "Suicide Squad" in some form while Warners is reportedly also chasing Viola Davis for the part of Amanda Waller.

"Suicide Squad" is scheduled for release on Aug. 5, 2016.

Makes sense. Tom is already a great actor, better than Smith and Leto imo. Right now he's trying to up his profile in movies for a payday. That won't happen in a stacked movie like this. Almost not worth his time. Bet he'd do a multi-deal movie if he was the focus though.

On the flip, I can see Will demanding a focus and if not declining and it's no surprise since Leto is The Joker he gets close to top priority.

Much of the Warner Bros future DC Comics movie slate relies on next year's Suicide Squad introducing the world of villains and anti-heroes to a cinematic universe that will already include a proto-Justice League.

After a strong initial casting announcement, bringing Will Smith on as Deadshot, Margot Robbie on as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto on as The Joker, Jai Courtney in as Boomarang and Tom Hardy on as Rick Flagg, the film added Viola Davis as anti-hero Amanda Waller. Last week saw Hardy drop out over the script with Jake Gyllenhaal rumored to replace him. Now we have the details of the story (plot points) from two inside sources that corroborate each other.

WARNING...SPOILERS AHEAD SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING, LEAVE NOW.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Source one tells us:

Deadshot and Harley Quinn meet early when Deadshot is assassinating an inmate that is being transported from Arkham. Quinn disrupts the hit when she tries to break Joker out and both are captured and taken to Amanda Waller's prison.
Waller has Joker moved to the prison as a means to keep Quinn in check. He spends most of the film in a cell, very much like Hannibal Lecter, until he breaks out in the end.
Boomerang is already in the Squad and there is a contention between he and Deadshot, Deadshot killed his father.
The team is tasked on a mission to prevent 'bio weaponry' from being sold to Lex Luthor by a human trafficking gang. The gang is handing over the Enchantress to Luthor who it is implied wants her for magical abilities. They kidnap her and take her back to the prison where she is kept in an underground area, which has all sorts of genetic freaks imprisoned including a King Shark.
Rick Flag is there as a watchdog over Waller. The twist is his character is revealed as being in league with the villain, Rick Flag Snr at the end. (This is what I believe may have been the reason Hardy left) It is out of left field. They want the weapons that Waller has amassed.
There is a lot of action in the script but it primarily deals with Deadshot, Harley Quinn and the Joker. Flag is more of a government agent than anything else before his reveal as a villain.
Source two tells us the following.

A draft of the script has been finished and is being circulated between several executives pending a rewrite. The first part of the film concerns the capture of Lawton and Harley Quinn and afterwards they are taken to a maximum-security prison run by a warden called Waller. They are implanted with explosive devices and forced to be part of a mission where they are attacking an arms dealer's convoy. They are supposed to steal a weapon but end up capturing a woman called June, she has a split personality and her evil side is a sorceress.
Waller is tracking down and capturing every super powered hero and villain and it is implied that she is after Batman but he is not in the film, only mentioned and shown on camera footage. The film is being used as a set up for the franchises villains and not only the Suicide Squad. Belle Reve (the prison) is home to many of villains beyond the leads. The script ends with a prison riot where most of them escape, including the Joker. The Joker has a large part in the movie but doesn't get involved in any action scene until the very end during the riot where he kills several people.
The script has been getting much praise in the studio. The rumor is Tom Hardy left because of the changes to his characters although he is in two of the main action scenes.
So there you have it, some cool plot points from the upcoming film. Let us know what you think.

Sounds really good.

^^Pretty much. I just need to see some footage (whenever they get it) and I'm in.
Still wish they was doing the Super Max movie. Could have been like a double feature movie with this.

If that's true that's a genius move considering that the villains are what DC gets praise for. At least since the Nolanverse.

They release 3 animated films a year but there might be more this year.

Throne of Atlantis is the first, JL: Gods & Monsters comes out in March and then Batman v Robin in April. Machinima is also releasing 3 short films chronicles as a prequel to the JL: Gods & monster film. There are likely going to be one or two more films this year too since there are still a long way to go int he year.
