A small part of me is annoyed because Belichick and the rest of the Pats FO won't get the full slander & criticism they've been due for years now.

It HAD to get done though. Replacing Talib with a lesser player would have meant another offseason of total failure.

Revis isn't afraid to bet on himself and is just as cutthroat as the Patriots. Not sure that bodes well for a long-term relationship. We'll see how it goes.

There's still a lot more work to do. They have to get another legit pass rusher, man. I'm tired of seeing opposing QB's get all the time in the world back there. Versatility doesn't mean **** if you can't disrupt the other team's offense and get off the field on 3rd down.

The potential loss of Edelman is gonna suck.

agree about the pass rush...but i'm telling you right now, it will be a major weakness again for us. chandler jones has shown flashes but is nowhere near consistent enough in terms of disrupting a QB's pocket. edge rusher is a must add for this team, but at this point, not sure where you look.

I feel you, DA. We talk about the pass rush and ****** DB's/WR's every damn offseason.

And word @ Chandler Jones. He had a solid year, but it always felt to me like most of his sacks came out of how good the coverage was on the back end rather than being a force all on his own. He's definitely capable of being that guy though. I'm looking forward to watching him make that leap.

Brandon Browner is coming in to visit today.

he is? interesting...wonder if he'd be cheap. assume he would be

Revis is lipstick on a pig, but damn expensive, extremely effective lipstick

for the team ? yes , but not for the defense . adding Revis , the emergence of Jamie Collins, and getting Mayo , Wilfork , and Tommy Kelly back will have our defense looking extremely solid . Re-signing Edelman is all we need IMO . we can pick up a nice TE in the draft and continue to develop Dobson and Thompkins

new details of the Revis deal are out . helps us out a ton this year for cap space , but its almost inevitable we arent keeping him past this year

An important wrinkle has been learned about the contract Darrelle Revis has agreed to with the Patriots.

It has widely been reported as a one-year, $12 million deal, which is accurate. Revis will earn $12 million this season.

But for salary-cap accounting purposes, and to protect Revis from being assigned the franchise tag in 2015, the sides have added a second year to the pact in 2015 that would pay Revis $20 million and count $25 million against the salary cap.

The $20 million is an astronomical figure, as is the $25 million cap charge. That makes it unlikely the Patriots would pay it, thus making Revis an unrestricted free agent in 2015 or one of the highest-paid players in football.

The second year helps the Patriots spread out the salary-cap charges for Revis over two seasons instead of taking one $12 million salary-cap hit in 2014. Revis' cap charge for 2014 is now $7 million.

Here is a breakdown of the deal for those into specifics:

2014
Cap value: $7M
Cash value: $12M
Signing bonus: $10M
Roster bonus: $500K ($33.33K per game if on 46-man roster up to 15 games)
Base salary: $1.5M

2015
Cap value: $25M
Cash value: $20M
Roster bonus-1: $12M (earned on April 1, 2015, if club exercises option prior to end of 2014 league year)
Roster bonus-2: $500,000 ($33.33K per game if on 46-man roster up to 15 games)
Base salary: $7.5M

now lets use some of that cap savings to retain Edelman :nerd:

i'm going to assume Edelman signs elsewhere. he learned his lesson from Wes, i'm sure.

the only way his departure isn't felt significantly is if Vareen and Gronk can stay healthy, because on third down those two are going to be the guys. Amendola can't be relied on until he shows us something on a consistent basis (his week 1 performance last season was OUTSTANDING but he never got it going after that because of that groin). i think we can survive without Jules if we pick up a FA receiver and draft one of those stud TE's.

Revis Island + Wilfork Subcontinent = domination on defense :pimp:

Not looking like he's gonna stay :frown:

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 2m
Vince Wilfork asked Patriots for his release, per @RapSheet. Wilfork made it clear to Patriots in recent weeks he will not restructure deal.

HUGE loss if he's released,no idea who's gonna replace big ol' Wilfork :smh:. Hopefully they jump in and go after Peppers or Allen as a result, that line is gonna need even more work after a loss like that.

Not even mad. I see no point in eating up cap space paying a guy who plays a relatively insignificant position in todays NFL. Last year when he went down, it was dissapointing, but the general consensus in the media and elsewhere is that is really wasn't that big of a hit personell wise. Stick a big body in there who is younger and not fresh off a huge injury for a fraction of the price. Done and done.

wow, Rolaholic. crazy.

posted in the NFL thread: i'm not going to lie....i'm not crushed by this move one bit. nonetheless, thanks for everything, Vince. played your *** off for us and was HUGE for us. good luck

I'd say that it's a decent hit seeing as there's not too many d-lineman that can clog up the lanes up the middle like Wilfork plus he's one of the leaders on the team, especially on defense. Don't know how much they can count on Tommy Kelly or Vellano to step up. This means they'll probably need to draft a DL if they don't use the cap room saved on a free agent.

I really don't see any team giving him a better deal or big money though so there might be some tiny chance of him being back.

i saw us drafting DT regardless of this move. either with that first or second pick. Hageman or Nix have to be high on the list.

Was hoping they'd take advantage and get a playmaker on offense with that first pick, either a TE or one of those stud receivers. Would love to see Nix in blue and silver but I'm not too sure if he'll fall all the way to us.

Also just noticed that Raji's available, you guys think he'd be a suitable replacement? He'd probably come cheaper than the other free agent Dlinemen and would give us that big presence up front again.

yeah i agree. i was hoping they'd go TE with the first pick. either Amaro or ASJ. this makes it look more like Hageman/Nix and then Niklas in the second. doubt Amaro or ASJ are around that late in the second.

Yea I think either one would be a great fit but I'm thinking if they can find some way to sign Smith/Nicks/Sanders/Jones, I'd say draft a DL in the 1st and get a TE or DB in the 2nd

|I

not upset with the move in theory , but it just adds to the list of things we need in the draft . too much reliance on talent from the draft worries me

there needs to be another FA splash if we let him , talib and edelman go

yeah i mean there is SERIOUS cash to play with right now. USE it.

steve smith, lamarr woodley, DRC, edelman....sign some people here!

*no order of preference in the above

--coming off the achilies injury i was wondering how Wilfork was going to be. I guess with them paying Revis, it may have touched some feelings when they asked Wilfork to restructure.

-- Steve Smith would be a good pickup if true, but what is this teams infatuation with receivers under 6 feet?

Hard to see Big Wilfork go, figured he would retire with the Pats, had to be done tho

On the plus side with him getting released and Kelley just restructuring his contract freeing up another 800k we should be in play to make some big moves

So far we've met with Jason Avant, Brandon LaFell, Wesley Woodyard, Matt Shaughnessy, Brandon Browner and Shelley Smith

I think only Shaughnessy has a deal, he re-uppeed with the Cardinals
