CHROMECAST or RASPBERRY PI

can already stream everything from the computer through the PS3.  Well not everything, no .mkv files, but can still control Netflix/YouTube with my cellphone if im too lazy to use the controller.

download ps3 media server if you want to play .mkv files. just start it and use that to access your hd and play through there.

I've never got PS3 media server to play files reliably for me. I've tweaked it repeatedly, wrote custom code for it, opened up various network ports and it just will not stream X264 properly. I know it's not my router as I've got a high end router than has no problem streaming anything else and I know I have proper bandwidth.

I think with 802.11 N being supported I'm going to get much better results with the Chromecast since the PS3 is only B/G. I should mention that my PS3 is not hardwired >D

really? all i did was download it, set it up, tweaked it so that it would play my subtitles correctly on anime eps i watch and that was pretty much it.

ps3 isn't hardwired but my pc is to my router so that may have something to do with it.

Lol google barely updated the google TV what makes cats think they will do anything for this? The Dev community hacking this is what makes this a worthy investment for only 35 bucks

Still looking myself. I'm not rushing though. When I find it, I'll get it.

I think I've found an alternative that I want to get called Raspberry Pi

i don't know if I should wait to see if someone gets XBMC running on Chromecast though

Same thing ive been looking forward to buy since the apple tv go over $200 now. I probably buy this rasberry PI just to mess around since its so cheap.

i watched a few tutorials on setting up the sd cards, doesn't seem that hardi already have all the part that it needs laying around

^^^ same here I got all the pieces at my crib except the device, and it isn't too hard to set it up either.

Anyone pick one up yet

Still waiting for mine to ship from Amazon.

did you get a ship confirm notice yet?

i ordered mine through google play store and got ship confirmation a day or two later. if only UPS wasnt so damn inefficient. Tracking is showing that it was scanned in in my city yesterday but it has the expected delivery date as 8/3.

i honestly dont even know why i bought this thing since im fairly tech-illiterate. I guess for $35 i figure that its a win if i find even 1 use for it. right now my only plan is to stream youtube from my TV to watch UFC prelims instead of hooking up my laptop via hdmi to my tv with no sound.

I have 2 laptops already, so I don't mind leaving one hooked up to the TV via HDMI. Plus there is no lag.

I'll keep my 35 dollars.

if you have Comcast you don't need the Chromecast.  Check this before you buy...

messing around on my tv tonight and found that Comcast added a new feature called "Send To TV"

it basically does the same thing the Chromecast does. Broadcast anything from your computer, phone, etc without having to hookup you laptop to the tv

to your tv.  It gives you the same youtube app as the PS3. There are a couple other sites that are optimized for it too

gonna tinker with it some more tomorrow.

you just add this little tab to your bookmarks bar or download the app on your phone

and choose what tv you want to send it to

Raspberry Pi is a DIY unit

It won't just work out the box

Pain in the *** to configure.

But the possibilities are endless. I've seen some really cool hacks with Pi. If you have computer knowledge and loads of free time, definitely look into buying 1 or 2 of these. Very portable and scalable.

Just bought my rasberry pi it should arrive Friday. I have a few hacks already planned.

raspberry pi is advertised as $35 but I dropped at least $90-110 on accessories; i.e. power source, SD card, HDMI - HDMI cable and WiFi dongle. I bought most of my stuff off element14 & amazon for the wireless keyboard/mouse.

Tomorrow I'm gonna figure out how to finally get everything to boot properly. It doesn't show up and run the start-up program burnt onto the SD card.

What you can do with the Raspberry pi is use it as a computer to access the internet or use the XBMC media program to play your movies, songs, shows on your connected hard drive.
