this

OP let be roommates!

I wish to move back too but the older I get the more I realize that lifes a bit easier down in florida. Im back in school for paramedic then RN., once Im done Ill then decide what Im going to do. Would love to join FDNY!!!. Youre still in high school famb, so the best advice I can give you is go to college, secure your future. Youll see thing in a different perspective and who knows, who might stay.

fyi, if you decide to enlist go Marines!!, or Navy..

The reason I'd like it in the city is because of the major I'm debating on studying. Forensic sciences, or something to do with the Criminal Justice system. Where better than the NYPD Investigations units? Tampa doesn't thrill me the way the Apple does either.

I dont blame you, Tampa sound boring lol. I stay in south florida, its straight. Not sure on how the process goes for applying to NYPD but Im assuming that you would have to apply for the academy. Check the date, FDNY is every 4 years, but take your time and plan accordingly. A lot of people who live in the city cant get in NYPD, heard its pretty tough

My dude you don't even know the half of it, but my pops is former NYPD. He went through the whole academy, was years ago though. I'm one to do my research though, trust me on that.

I know how you feel OP, when my parents split I moved down to MD with my Mom while Pops stayed in NYC. Only difference was that I was older, and I was going back twice a year, so it was still home to me. I moved back for college and i've never been happier, I go to St. John's though. Don't try and get your own place, just live with your fam. It costs mad bread to live in NYC. Yes you can hold a part time job and go to class, I do it. I would recommend looking for jobs on campus first so you don't have to worry about commuting. Hit me up if anything.

Posts like this give me hope, good looks especially since you can relate. There's a plaza right across from where my grandmas crib is at, I was thinking about looking for work there. 5 minute walk, and I could make it home in a breeze after a long day of classes and work.

I think so. Like before, I know a few people that have registered their car with fam out of state to cut costs on insurance. If you get pulled over, hit em with the "this is my family relatives car, etc.".

Lol its like that tho.... Remember when I was going to choose the career path of FBI or CIA.

OP,

I don't want to shatter your dreams, but I'm going to give you the "skinny" on NYC.

First things first, do not move to NYC if you're planning on going to John Jay. No disrespect to anyone who went there, but attending this school does not justify a move to NYC. Your opportunites will be limited after graduation coming out of John Jay. I understand you want to do officers training school, but you also have to keep your options open if you decide the military is not for you. I know I know, you say "nah, I want to go into the Navy." Trust me, NYC has a way of changing your mind...

Look into schools like NYU, which I believe offers some type of ROTC/Military credit. Going to a school like NYU or Columbia is justifiable for a move to NYC because it opens up more opportunities. I don't know what your academics are like, but if they aren't the greatest, think about staying in florida for a couple years then transfer out. It looks great on transfer letters when you mention you worked part time and went to school full time because everyone in NYC does that; hence showing you are prepared for the NYC life.

Also, if your end result is officers training school, you don't need to come to NYC. You can attend any college and major in anything to get into officers training. Stack your money, that's the way to go.

A part time job will help you with a few things: train fare, living expenses, and lunch money. You're going to be making next to nothing. Don't expect to live a lavish lifestyle where you're out partying having a grand ole time. Expect to struggle out here.

You will not be able to rent out a studio working a part time job, unless you plan on living in the areas where it's not safe to walk around at 2-3 in the morning. Don't be fooled by advertisements of studios for 800-900 bucks. All these places are in bad areas, or areas with no local transportation. Most out of towners get fooled by this.

Moving out is a big step. Moving out to another state is huge. But moving out and moving to NYC is a feat in it's own. Think about it some more. It's definitely possible, just know it will be a struggle if you don't have the right opportunities in place.

A topic is car insurance, I heard it's mad expensive, especially since someone recently posted here that it's a problem. What are the rates like? For example my car is a 1997 Accord, would I be seeing some crazy *** rates?

My friend if you think a 97 Accord will last in the streets of NYC for more than 2 years than I got a Bridge there I can sell you...............

You talking about Insurance?

How about maintenance? Inspection? Gas prices? PARKING?!?!?!?!!?

Those double parked cars, no lines on the road, damaged potholes, streetlights on every bock gonna have you reaching for a Metrocard real quick

Good Luck in the concrete jungle though.........The Rest of us who know better will think about you from time to time and lightly chuckle to ourselves when we think about you.........

Cousin was running same year car, even worse it was a Manual. Lasted 5 years, I thank the lord mine is Auto. He also had A/C problems, and gears were grinding when going into third. The only problem with my car is a speedometer sensor is busted, a 40 dollar fix that I can do myself. I've seen my uncle hit spots across the G.W bridge in Jersey for lower gas prices. I still estimate a good 30-40 bucks a month for gas. That's if I even decide to take my car with me, I could sell it for 2k out here, after the paint job I have done on it even 2.5. That's a 1.5k profit, since my parents payed only 1k for it. (They handed down the car to me) I'm one to prove people when they give me doubts, I'll update on my progress via PM if you'd like.
