THE THREAD ABOUT SKATEBOARDING.

damn that's a lot.

another cool city pushing video

if anybody could find me those Axion shoes Manny is wearing can you please let me know. (size 11 but I'll wear a 10.5/11.5)

I know bikes are featured in this vid, but wouldn't it be cool if all security guards were like this guy? :smokin

that almost brought a tear to my eye

 **** bikers though.

Thrasher upload from earlier today. fakie heels are so hard, props to this guy, his nose/tail may have hit but I'll count it as a make.

I'm amazed that those car wash banks haven't been skatestopped yet.

Hill bomb would have been made better if it was steeper or longer and the guy managed to shake off some speed wobbles. Also, he was pushing mongo.

In response to the cool security guard, here's a clip from a while back featuring a super angry man who loves his bush. Here's the interview with the skater in the video regarding the whole mess.

Fakie tricks are harder than nollie stuff in my mind and I feel like a lot of the footage in videos is proof. If I saw someone fakie heelflip into anything on a handrail, I'd definitely count it higher than the nollie heel version (unless it was super ugly). I forget where the clip was, but it showed Koston trying to fakie 360 flip into a backside lipslide on a handrail.

Even with all the skepticism a lot of skaters might have about corporate companies having skate teams, at least it seems that Nike pays their riders enough to make it worth their while? I'm more skeptical of when a surf brand tries to get into skating, or any shoe company has a surf team. Surfers don't wear shoes when they surf so why does it matter which ones they wear when they aren't?

Quiksilver had a sick skate team, but knowing it's a surf company (and a lot of skaters dislike surfers, especially when they invade the skatepark with their longboards), I was never gonna buy any of their stuff. I feel bad that Reese Forbes bought into their whole idea that they were gonna give him a pro shoe. At least they put out a sick promo video?

Reese Forbes skating to 50 Cent.

Huge football fan (soccer to the rest of ya'll), love this copa collection from 3 Stripes. They're really making a run at Nike SB. The footy/skate inspired shirts look really sharp especially the Spain one...

Love Gonz!!!!!

I like the adidas team, but I can't get over how they seem to fit a little big. It didn't matter back when I was wearing Gazelles and rolling around doing pressure flips, but I've gotten more picky in my old age I guess? Seems they don't have any Japanese skaters on their team. A Japan jersey would have been sick. Guess they'll let Nike win that battle based on how many Janoskis and Dunks I see people rocking here? Even though I got a ton of shoes that still need to be skated, maybe I'll go try some Busenitzs on this weekend?

New Trevor Colden part is up. Put it on mute when you watch it.

that kid in the bush video makes other skaters look soft

actually a lot of the videos of skaters fighting does

wasn't Dylan Rieder on that quicksilver team? I think the best clothing brand with skaters is Ambig and Split, aside from Diamond
eyes.gif
which I'm surprised Nicky hasn't tried making a video yet.

Ambig's 'Modern Art'

Adidas shoes do fit weird, I have a pair of Busenitz but they kinda feel like I'm walking in a shoe that I have been walking in for 10 years. if that makes sense. I do love the video they put out, honestly they're one of the best straight to online videos/clips or whatever, to me at least.

my favorite

I actually liked Trevor's part a lot!!! the song was funny, very Skate Mental-ish

I liked this part more than his other Thrasher part he put out not long ago, he's filming for Chronicles 3 now

"Weirdest fitting shoes" prize has to go to the defunct RBK DGK shoes though. I went down half a size and they still felt super big. Bought 2 pairs on ebay, tried them on and then sold them to someone else. I forget if I made or lost money on those transactions. They looked cool, but if I have to go a size down for them to fit, forget about it!

I think Dylan was on Quiksilver back before he got all "fashionable" with his cuffed pants and tucked in shirts. He was on Analog as well, before they and Gravis dropped their skate teams (in the US anyway).

With the possible exception of companies like Four Star or Matix (sample sales), I'm not huge on buying "skate clothes" unless they have some practical designs that help with skateboarding. I got some Brandon Biebel signature Matix jeans that just fit weird, tight in the hips but super baggy in the legs. At the very least, there should be some usage of stretch materials for pants if they're gonna do that whole slim fit thing. Maybe some moisture wicking as well? No one wants to look like Gershon Mosely when they're skating! Those Footprint stretch chinos with the hip pads looked interesting but I missed out on the promotion when they were super cheap.

Colden talking about his departure from Mystery. He makes Jaime Thomas seem like the bad guy but a contract is a contract. It's almost like he's in the same position as Ed Templeton, but we don't hear about him crying on the phone when he has to let someone go from the team.

I like Diamond but they've gotten so popular outside of skateboarding that I wonder if the video would end up like the Supreme one. Even if everyone on the team only got one trick or line, it'd be a super long video!

I didn't think the 'team' was that big

I always wanted a pair of those Stevie Williams RBK's
nthat.gif

I feel you on the 'skate' clothes but how do you feel about insoles? there's insole companies popping up here and there. I always used insoles from a pair I threw away.

also there's been a more-than-average bashing of Nike SB lately. Alphonzo Rawls did this, he also just announced he's doing work for Supreme.

EDIT: 15K

to ride for another company, I know it's a contract but I don't think anybody but Jaime would do this. I heard he kicked Jimmy Carlin off Mystery and Fallen bc he didn't like his skating in Perpetual Motion. I dislike Jaime more but damn his battle commander was sick. all this talk on him being 100% skateboarding he was quick to pick up New Balance Numeric.

Since I have kind of flat feet and overpronate, anything that will help support my feet better is welcomed, especially with all these minimalist "boardfeel" shoes that have been popular for the past few years. I hate how the "simple is best" approach has been popular with clothing design as well. Why should I pay $60 for a pair of jeans if they're just regular denim when I can get a pair at Uniqlo that have stretch material and get hemmed for free for $45? I'll buy a shirt if I like the design, but it better at least be some quality cotton or dri-fit material.

I had a pair of those Footprint Gamechangers and they were pretty good. Waiting until I feel like I'll be skating more regularly to set up the next pair. I think I got plantar fasciitis from skating in those E-Cues or URLs back in the day.

Found out about another wheel company that I want to try out in the near future, Prize Fighter Cutlery. Seems they're a small operation and seems like everyone on SLAP is claiming that they're super hard to flatspot. And their team is pretty sick, too.

Leo Valls

"Loose Trucks" Max Palmer. I wonder how loose his trucks are compared to Daewon or Matt Rodriguez. They look pretty wobbly though.

And then, there's more Back 40! Deleted scenes!!!

Lastly, Brian Anderson fashion tips in Vogue for girls who want to look like they skate. The related articles are hilariously/painfully bad.

Isn't it contradictory to do work for Supreme but dis Nike? Regardless, people are gonna hate on big companies questioning whether or not they'll be around when skating isn't popular anymore, but as we've seen from the example of Jaime Thomas, a lot of skater-owned companies do pretty lame things too. At the very least, big companies seem to take care of their riders financially? People could argue that Pappalardo got screwed over by Converse, but we only know his side of the story, which could be extremely biased based on his recent weirdness.

so I'm not the only one who hates vulcanized soles? my feet are done for and all that is available is vulc

 but they were sick though.

I wish wheel graphics were permanent, there's some AMAZING graphics/artwork out there on wheels that deserves some sort of life. those prize fighter wheels look sick, 101 durometer wheels feel so good, I just slapped some old bones

I notice a difference at least.

that BA thing on Vogue

I remember skating being looked 'badly' on and now it's crossing over into fashion, same thing punk rock went through

some Gonz stuff since I'm wearing his shoes today

Jaime Thomas's response to the whole Trevor Colden thing via a post on the SLAP message boards. I changed my mind about the situation. Hopefully, Nike doesn't try to get Nick Boserio to leave since he's a nice fit at Zero.

i didn't read the 6 pages of this, but this is how this went down from my seat:

trevor started riding for mystery a few years back and I heard he had bounced on a couple of brands with little regard previously, but I'm not a fan of contracts for board brands and the relationship was just starting out, so i was like his past is his past and he seems cool, so lets get behind him.

we gave him a place to stay at the park's dorms and he progressed fast; everyone started taking interest in him and he seemed to be motivated by money, cause he started requesting frequent raises; I told Ryan Bobier, the TM, that the only way I felt comfortable with giving him the money he wanted considering his past team jumps and how tight budgets were was to get him in a contract in order to make sure the investment wouldn't be a waste, because honestly Mystery couldn't afford to throw money away. the contract had automatic raises at timed milestones with a clause about an additional solid increase above industry standard when he turned pro.

He had no credit and I personally loaned him money for his first car and we bent over backwards for trevor for years. all was good, but as we were working with him on his boards, we started hearing that Nike was encouraging him to ride for skate mental because supposedly it would help his situation at Nike; Even though his graphics were done and his pro board was scheduled to be released in 2 months, he hit me up and said thanks for everything, but I'm gonna ride for Skate Mental.

I told him that we invested a lot into him and he was going to devastate the next 6 months of sales for the brand that was planned around him and we offered to let him out of his contract early if he'd give us time to plan for his departure. he seemed to understand then the next day posted on instagram that he was thankful for what Mystery had done, but he was moving on.

I called staba and said, hey trevor is ignoring the fact that he's under contract and we've invested a lot in him and his boards are ready to go and he's just ******** on us. Brad said that's between you and trevor, we won't announce anything until you guys work it out.

The approximate revenues to be gained by the company for his pro board sales throughout the term of his contract was $30k+ I knew that was too much to ask for skate mental or nike to pay, so I asked trevor to have the brands that wanted him to quit or who he was gonna ride for to pay $15k to nullify his contract. i guess he asked them for help and realized he was on his own, but he had already told the whole world he had quit mystery, so trevor coughed up the money himself. that was not my intention, but the money went straight into the mystery marketing budget and I couldn't feel too bad about it all things considering.

there was several ways this could of been handled, but he chose the worst way and it cost him.

if you wanna judge me and say I'm greedy or I suck, go for it, but i din't personally get anything from the situation except **** on my face. in the end business is business and it sucks

peace

Even worse than the BA story was this list of "fashion skateboards". Ugh. Unless it's some classic graphic or series, boards are meant to be skated! If I ever go into someone's place and they have anything like those boards on the wall or off in a corner, they just revealed something about themselves to me that I won't be able to forget. Trend hoppers aren't fooling anyone who actually skates. We know what you're trying to do, and it's not working. Good luck with the next trend.

I don't get the whole holding the board with the griptape facing out either since I always hold it trucks facing out. Seems like it's be easier to throw down the board to skate that way, especially if you're holding it by the nose or tail. Must be the same rationale people use to argue that facing the wheel's graphics in with the bearing shields popped off is the "right way" too. Skateboarding shouldn't be about rules. I liked the early '90's but people were too critical about what you could or couldn't do even though everyone looked stupid with their giant clothes and tiny wheels. I like colored wheels and colored trucks and doing griptape art regardless of what all the "black griptape only, white wheels with graphics facing in, bare metal trucks only, black shoes only" people may think.

Despite how wrecked my feet are I have quite a few vulcanized shoes in my rotation (Lakai, Vans, Nike, Gravis) but they're usually for when I don't think I'm gonna walk around that much or Lunarglides would be out of place. When I do go skating, it's in the Vans DD Spawns which are vulcanized but not as bad as a lot of the other vulcs I've tried on. Then again, I'm not skating a lot of stairs, handrails, or gaps any more so...

 @ that magazine article.

well, I take back what I previously said about Jaime, now I fully understand. but if Trevor is motivated by money I don't see him making much on Skate Mental, only money he's getting is the Nike money but I don't see him on any other board sponsor, I didn't really like him as a person since I saw that Weekend Buzz episode with him and Ishod, dude came off as being a so immature, same with Alex Midler or whatever his name is (that Real kid)

skateboarding is getting too political now
mean.gif

only vulc shoes I like are Supras, I love them but damn they don't last long, I loved the first Lizard King's and TK's, which I'm still bummed he's not on Supra anymore, I just read his sig shoe was second to the Janoski in the global market
eek.gif
I noticed not a lot of shops carry Supra either, I went to a couple shops not long ago looking for Ellington's but nada. I believe that shoe might be my all time favorite but haven't found a place nearby aside from Zumiez to carry it
eyes.gif

I also haven't seen a tour video of them for a minute, I know they use to pop out a few times a year. along with the Adidas videos, they were one of my favorites.

damn i was never picky with my skate shoes, not knowing what vulc is till now
when its a skate shoe, and i like it, i just get it and skate it. will be getting some janoskis this week to check if its any good for skating

and yes those supra tour vids are the best! here's one of my fave's because they went to Manila

between the ages of 14-18 I strictly only wore DVS and Emerica, so my foot I guess got use to all of the padding. only shoes I've liked a lot since coming back 2 years ago have been the PROD 5 and the Vans XLVI.

I copped a pair of Etnies Aventa's from Ross a few weeks back and I must say Etnies are super underrated, these shoes are amazing! real comfy and flexible. speaking of Etnies here's a couple parts that weren't posted I think.

excuse the noob questions. What is that grease/oil on my bones reds? I haven't added anything on it or got it in water but after skating, there is grease on my bearings and it has some weird black specks of some substance, looks like dirt but its not. Do I wipe it clean or leave it? Apparently its to protect against rust

^ Take a picture and post it so we can wee what you mean? Reds are pretty indestructible for the price, so unless they start slowing down, just leave them alone and keep skating? I have Bones Swiss and when I was skating a lot, the most I would do is wipe the dirt off the shields and add more Speed Cream when I'd change wheels and maybe clean them twice a year.

I usually skip vert parts, but I couldn't stop smiling the entire time I was watching, even though I grew up thinking Andy Mac was a kook. At least they didn't throw Shawn White in there?

So not only can Jaws jump off of buildings no problem, he can skate vert too? Backside kickflip stalefish and a 540?

Just got a book on a Skateboarder and his life, his name is Christain HoSoi and the Book looks great. You guy should give it a try if ya'll stop by a book store.

Youness may have no strong feelings about what futbol club he supports, but he can kill it on a skateboard! Kind of reminds me of Mike York during Hot Chocolate Tour when he was wearing basketball jerseys the entire time.

Mike York and his jersey collection. He hurts his knee at the end so maybe stop it 2/3rds of the way through if you don't want to see it. It's not gruesome or anything but guys who had bad knee injuries might not want to be reminded.

Grate skating!

So i just started skating and i find it impossible to ollie lol

How good is your riding? I found it easier to get my balance on point and to be comfortable riding before learning the ollie. Check out braille skateboarding tutorials

youness got me wanting to buy football jerseys just cause they look so good and comfy.. i just dont want to be called a "poser" for wearing a jersey of a team im not a fan of

i've been eyeing on that black/blue ManU jersey for months now since he wore it at tampa am

This. A lot of beginners want to jump straight into ollies and flip tricks but there's a lot you can work on until they start happening consistently. Getting comfortable pushing, stopping, and turning are essential. The back foot drag or even a tail drag (but don't overdo it because you'll kill your tail) works but if you can get powerslides down, that's even better because then you can get your drift on. Tic-tacking, walking the board and carving are also fun, relatively easy to do and can help maintain or increase your speed while riding. If you already have a hang of them, learn them switch?

How to powerslide video from Braille.

For the ollie, maybe get comfortable riding off of curbs to get used to shifting your weight to the back wheels? My main point is, get comfortable going as fast as you feel comfortable with. Too many kids at the parks wasting everyone's time going super slow and trying tricks that look like hot garbage. Or they put way too much wax on the ledges because they aren't going fast enough to make them slide or grind.

Also, you can try learning no complies or bonelesses as a way to get up and down curbs without ollies. I'm not saying don't learn them, but that there's a bunch of stuff you can do if the ollies aren't happening that day.
