THE THREAD ABOUT SKATEBOARDING.

Same here. I think stuff like the X Games, Street League, Maloof Cup, Dew Tour, etc. actually made me care even less about contests even though it's less about having perfect runs now. I can't blame a lot of the guys for trying hard to win since there's so much money involved, but I don't care to see the same few guys doing the same few tricks on similar courses for an entire "season". Last time I recall watching one of those contests, all these guys I never knew were pro (or who's parts I usually fast forward) were scoring pretty high, and on top of that, the commentators were way too serious or had no idea what they were talking about.

I think Steve Berra (co-owner of the Berrics and loony Scientologist wannabe actor) ranted once about how Nyjah has several hundred thousand followers on Instagram but didn't win SOTY. Does he not realize that maybe 99% of those people don't read Thrasher or even skate? Sure Thrasher put up Nyjah's "Fade to Black" video but he gets clowned on almost EVERY WEEK on Skateline as well.

Pool contests are awesome since everyone HAS TO have lines. There is no "do a trick, jump off your board then do another trick". As crazy as megaramp is, it feels more like I'm watching ski jumping every time I see it. Kinda bummed I missed out on the webcast this time.

Anyway, here's some old/new footage of Paulo Diaz, Rudy Johnson, Guy Mariano, and Gonz.

Lastly, Think and Alien Workshop seem to have gone out of business. Not saying that F.A. had anything to do with it, but then again, I wouldn't buy any of their stuff anyway.

Just found out one of my homies passed away. He got hit by a drunk driver. One of the best skaters in Hawaii. Skate the sky brah!

sorry to hear about your loss man. one fear of me skating during these warm nights is reckless drivers

may he Ride In Peace.

I just finished watching the Bones Brigade documentary on Netflix, worth the watch, a little long but I wasn't losing attention at all considering I can barely sit through an hour and a half long movie. definitely some good stuff, really insightful on how things were in the 80's.

also I had a weird really strong urge to buy some Grind King's today but luckily I'm poor and didn't throw money away like nothing.

weird/cool to still see him skate for Mystery and Circa, he doesn't fit well with Mystery, I can see him on Skate Mafia and Baker but he's doing something right, props to him. his skating and style is a lot sicker too since I first saw him on 'It's Time' and from 'Color Theory'

There is also this interview with Kalis about what a hypocrite Dill is after he made a comment about claiming to be more "core" than guys like Dyrdek. Just because he's a hipster that dresses weird and skates weird stuff in New York doesn't make him more of a skater than Kalis or Mikey Taylor. Steve Berra, maybe.

http://quartersnacks.com/2010/11/an-interview-with-josh-kalis/

Re-watched a bunch of Mikey Taylor's parts and there's no denying that he's good, to me it just seems that there's a lot of guys that also do the same stuff?

Thinking back though, Alien/Habitat was the best back when they had guys like Pendleton doing their artwork (before they got sold to Burton?). I bought a few of the Keith Haring collab shirts a few months ago, but didn't realize that the art direction had gotten so generic. As ridiculous as Dyrdek has gotten in recent years, he did what he thought was best to keep the company going for as long as it did. Hopefully, any resurrection of Alien doesn't end up as bad as it did with Plan B, Stereo, or Blueprint.

Birdhouse turned David Loy pro. Footage is good, but a lot of people are hating based on stuff he did/does off the board. The Internet is giving us too much information. Some ams/pros /industry guys work the game well (Daewon, who else?), some should just stick to skating (Koston, Atiba, Berra, Theotis, etc.).

I like some of the other pros on Birdhouse like Raybourn, Walker, Jaws, and OG Willy Santos, but I'm not even sure if I've ever seen a Birdhouse deck in a store or under someone's feet in years. At least, kids all over the suburban US are probably begging their parents to get them a Tony Hawk for their first board still? Kind of related, how is Tracker still in business? Every time I see Willy Santos post a picture of his set-up, I wonder if there are any shops that actually have those trucks. I guess they're still popular with longboarders or old school guys who never rode Indys?

Rat Poison was okay except for some of the filming made me a little dizzy.

I know Pappalardo knows that it's possible to upload video to Instagram based on some the random stuff he posts, so why is he posting all these stills of him skating? If he's trying to get a new board/sponsor, shouldn't he be at least getting someone to get video of something like this?

- I was looking for that interview, thanks!

- Mikey and TK always do the same tricks, Mikey in Skate More was the best Mikey (imo).

- David Loy's part was sick, I liked it a lot more than what JAWS puts out, I just don't like any of his stuff, gnarly nonetheless. I skated Birdhouse boards back in the day when I was hyped on Kirchart and Hawk and they were one of the best boards I remember skating along with AW but it's true, I've never seen a Birdhouse hanging up on a wall. Real, Girl, Element, Creature is all I see over here where I live. I have this new local skateshop that carries small brands/brands not really sold anywhere, problem is that they sell fast and they take a while for product to get stocked.

Dylan Rieder's first FA graphic. pretty cool, I want to know what wheels he rides, I like the squareness of them.

Leo Romero cruising around Long Beach spots. that 2 story drop is really scarier in person and that rail/stairs where Mark Appleyard BS TS bigspins out are a lot bigger in person too.

Tony Hawk's firstborn killing it! Hudson Riley Hawk! Noticed not too many switch tricks in this part, but then again, he's going big!

And just like magic, Grosso comes out with a new season of Love Letters to Skateboarding which has a father-son episode. Does Rodney Mullen or Daewon Song have kids? They could potentially be the most ridiculously technical skaters of all time (if they skated that is)! Kinda trippy to realize that Jessica Alba's uncles are the legendary pool skaters Micke and Steve Alba.

I wasn't old enough to appreciate Grosso back when he was pro for Santa Cruz back in the 80's/90's, so it's good that he's still around.

these are amazing, aside from the black/volt 5's I haven't been hyped on a PROD pair since his 3's.

Even though I liked all those teched out shoes with rubber toecaps, I've become more skeptical of shoes that aren't suede. They kind of remind me of Savier shoes or Nike E-cue; they lasted forever, but were pretty terrible.

Some of the skating in this short film is kinda unrealistic, but it's still a pretty amazing idea.

Also on Vimeo are a bunch of Hawaii skate videos, including the latest one from my local shop.

- I just saw a video just like that one, I was going to post it but it was too awful, it was like Michael Bay directed it.

- that guy with the black shirt? in the first video in the link was killing it with the manuals

I hate him bc he's so good at them.

a cool short European Vans video. that ollie at the end

Black tank top? Matt's (I can't bring myself to call him Shmatty even though that's his nickname) been killing it in Hawaii for a while and I think he's living in LA now. Seems like he's hooked up with DGK and skates a lot with Daniel Castillo and Vinnie Ponte according to his Instagram.

How did Moose get the nickname? What's up with all these nickname pros/ams now? I guess when a lot of man-ams of the late '90's and early 2000's had some fairly unmarketable names, the nickname would be the way to go? Names like Jeremy DeGlopper or Jimmy Astleford don't really look that good on a board or a shoe now do they?

Anyone had those E-Cues that didn't have the rubber net and just the mesh on them? I was thinking that a few weeks ago when I was trying to get some tricks on a friend's board while wearing my Premium Roshe Runs (I happened to run into him skating on the way to meet some other friends). Don't try to skate in Roshe Runs.

Never heard of this guy before, but he's pretty gnarly!

For some reason, I wasn't able to embed more than one video on the previous post, so I apologize for double posting.

Sean Sheffey is a living legend!

Vice Japan feature on Scott Johnston's transition from pro skater to shoe designer for Lakai.

Mikey is one of the skaters that doesn't do incredible tricks but the tricks he does do he makes look amazing.

Why he leave? I have been out of the loop for a while. So many team changes man.

i watched that a little while ago, it was pretty good though i think i enjoyed dogtown z-boys a little bit more.  Never realized how strange of a dude Rodney is, but he is the definition of a genius and a true innovator.

that Scott Johnston piece was really cool

not a fan of Torey Pudwill's shoes but these 3's are looking good, digging the straps.

what shoes are you wearing?

you also may not be jumping high enough obviously.

what I do before warming up is jump as high as possible and tuck both my knees in, I do that 5-10 time sand when I do tricks my brain make my legs tuck and jump higher.

also don't try landing hard, if you do that then you're only kicking the board away from your feet. just do the trick, catch it and wait til you land it. once you get more control and comfortable then that's when you slam your landings.

sucks so bad man.. they emailed me and everything months back saying they are excited and stuff and i was sooo excited to show them around and tour them just to find out i had to leave the country days before they arrive. MAN :frown:

cant wait tho to see the footage they come out with, especially knowing most of the spots there

wearing some signature nyjah hustons, its a low top. Def not the shoes, I think youre right about not jumping high enough and kicking the board. thanks

I love how the Baker crew never have up on Antwuan. Although, he might not have deserved all those chances, they never give up on family

low shoes are very prone to ankle rolling. some shoes are like that as well. one of my all time favorite shoes is the PROD 5 but I would always roll my ankle when I wore them.

Sounds like yallayalla had something come up at the last minute. Definite feels Batman.

Shoes can be prone to ankle rolling due to several factors whether they are lows, mids or even highs. A thick midsole, or one that's wedge-shaped is generally one to avoid. Easy test is to take the shoe and press the edge of the sole near the heel against the floor, table, counter, whatever and see how easily it ends up rolling away from the edge. At least, that was the theory my friend who I worked at a skate shop with back in the day had. This was back when it seemed every shoe had at least one air bubble. If the sole is narrow and the upper stretched out to where it hangs over the shoe, that could also be dangerous.

Definitely, try to stay as light footed as possible. Skateboard's are a pretty unstable thing to "stomp" on especially when it's flipping and spinning in the air (or bouncing off the ground). Certain tricks need it more than others for sure. Frontside flips or half-cab heelflips, when I try them require me to think about trying to jump as high as possible and land as lightly as possible because the way I flip them right now, they pop up kind of vertical. Not sure why I can't make my body flip them like I do switch frontside flips or nollie frontside heelflips though. Mental block?

On the topic of jumping high, Carlos Iqui.

For examples of being light-footed, Kenny Anderson.

Also, Danny Montoya. Switch flip out of a switch frontside bluntslide in a line?? 15 years ago? What?
