The recent ones have been pretty bad and boring. It's always been exploration and fighting at the core though. The best part of the series for me was feeling immersed in a very different time period.

You mean to tell me if they removed the intro, middle, and end cutscene / first person parts (present day abstergo stuff), remove the pronouns "assassin" and "templar" (which they tried to do... ol' boy even scoffed at the hidden blade... so disrespectful), and the few hints that this game couldn't have stood alone outside of the assissins creed universe?
You're delusional.
Ubisoft clearly used the assassins creed name and universe to sell black flag.
That isnt necessarily a bad thing, but its true. Some people liked it -- you... some people didnt -- me.

What made that game fun was the pirate stuff. as soon as you start to play it as a pirate game and not an assassin's game, it gets fun

That doesn't have anything to do with my negative review of the game.
Ubisoft made a pretty good pirate game and a horrific assassins creed game but it was a huge success using the assassins creed fanbase to sell it.

Just finished Doom II, I'm ready to slay some demons tomorrow
I'm baffled how I managed to complete these games when I was a little kid with no guides or anything. I had to pull up a youtube guide at times cuz I was completely lost

Play as a guy playing a simulation of another guy? Uh, wut?
Black Flag was the best AC precisely because it had the least to do with unraveling an incomprehensible mythology, and instead had the most to do with fun gameplay.
