I believe custom games use P2P and MM uses microsoft's azure servers.

Yeah servers didnt go live until yesterday, everyone with early access was playing on P2P, also party leader automatically gets Host in MCC unlike how it used to be, where it could be stolen by whomever joined a lobby. I have no idea if it will migrate mid game though
