was Allen Iverson forced into retirement? (very long read)

You got to be kidding me? If you really believe he was forced into retirement than you're letting your love for AI dilute what's the truth and reality.

He retired because no one wanted him on their team. He was selfish, arrogant and had the ego the size of Montana. he refused to adjust to his environment and never really was honest about "growing up". When you're in the your late 30's, with very little athletic ability and size--it'll be tough to find a job in the NBA. The only exception would be if he was a great teammate, but even with that most GM's had their doubts. Being a veteran can go a long way in the NBA, so it goes to show you where Allen Iverson was in life for this be happening.
This.
Well put.
Pound for pound one of the best ever.
For someone who ushered and lead the era of Hip Hop in the League and as talented, fearless he was he didn't change or evolve or grow when everything around him changed.

Cedric Ceballos' post tells you everything you need to know.

AI often had a bad or difficult attitude. Nobody "blacklisted" or conspired against him. Teams will cater to the worst of attitudes when the skills are there, turn their shoulders when it's no longer worth it.

Whether or not you agree with it, he was blackballed. He ushered in an entire generation and represented everything the NBA was against (but profited from) and he began to slip skill wise, they showed him the door. A former MVP should not have to go through the D League. Even some in the media said that was a huge insult. He won't be the only one that falls a victim to this new pure image driven league.

If you don't think blacklisting exists in the NBA, look at Kareem Abdul Jabbar who can't get a head coaching job because of his bad attitude when he played and Mahmoud Abdul Rauf.

Na. He's too accomplished to go down that road. For all of this bad or difficult attitude talk, I haven't really heard former teammates of AI come out and say that. If Jordan didn't win championships, would he have been considered a good teammate? Kobe? So I want to know where this bad/difficult attitude really comes from. And he's said out of his own mouth that he'd be willing to accept any role. Is he lying?

in 2010 he was scoring 15 points for a second tier euro league team, but its because he was blacklisted by the NBA and not because he just wasnt that good anymore right? also smh at the nba for forcing him to go broke

Yes. See his Memphis Grizzlies career. That's exactly what happened.

AI has an attitude. We don't need any of his teammates to come out and say it for us to see it. We can see it with our own eyes. If you want some examples just go back to the last page.

He didn't play hard in Europe and everyone knows that. His heart wasn't there, and he already felt as if he shouldn't have been playing in Europe if he didn't want to. I think it was referenced in the article, but wasn't he promised the starting job in Memphis but wasn't delivered? Please correct me if I'm wrong. And at that point in their careers, do you give the nod to a Mike Conley? Do you give the nod to a Rodney Stuckey? Let's speak objectively here...

jr smith did not care at all in china and he still scored 30 on the reg. when you can ball and you're playing vs scrubs then points should be easy. on memphis it is laughable to say that the team is better with AI than it is with mike conley, its not about individual skill its about how the team works and in 15 or so "prime" years his only success came when he put the team on his back there is no proof that he can fit into a team concept where he has to defer to another player (part of the reason they traded him for billups and denver got better). i dont think i have ever watched a pistons game in my life other than playoff games so i cant speak on how AI and stuckey were looking that year

No way dude was blackballed, Sprewell choked out his coach and was still able to get work. A.I.'s pride and bad attitude ultimately did him in.

not blacklisted. he did it to himself. at some point you have to stop blaming others. if he put the work and dedication in and willing to take any role, he would have been in the league as some minor role.

but then again, there's alot of players in china who could be in the league that aren't as well.

don't forget, aside from making the coach go night night, he dragged Carleismo all over the practice floor lol

AI did do it to himself tho. out here in philly he wasnt about his city. dude was a arrogant scumbag douche who treated his fans like crap. ive been around him a few times off the court and hes the type that if you aint in his inner circle he is gonna look down on u no matter who u are. all from grandparents asking for an autograph and him declining saying "i dont sign grown people autographs" to then the grandma getting her grandson (8 years old) to ask for one and him saying "nah yo im good" walkin out the city line footlocker wit his bentley outfront double parked lol. so to me, dude is a scum bag arrogant pos who did this all to himself.

Whether the league conspired to "blackball" Iverson the fact still remains he was in the league for 12 seasons while making $154.5 million dollars and a full pension.

The Iverson story has taken on a life of its own where people start to think there was this giant conspiracy against the league's top player in his prime where they led him off in handcuffs. He played (very well) for over a decade, pissed off a lot of people in the process, and towards the end couldn't find any takers for one last run. You are guaranteed nothing in pro sports once you are in the tail end of your career.

Allen Iverson was blackballed and it's obvious, Stern always hated dude

and point blank if derek ******g fisher and kwame brown are good enough for the NBA there is no way AI isnt idc if he was 40yrs old

Sounds like a personal problem.

Dude...  Allen Iverson wasn't willing to play off the bench.  Those guys are.  Plenty of teams gave him chances to be a role player.  Your point makes no sense.  If he was willing to take the role of Fisher or Kwame he would've been able to.

I don't remember Derek Fisher saying "I'm a former MVP, I don't come off the bench."

show me these plenty of teams that gave him a chance recently

or are you talking the grizzles sixers fiasco?

Dont forget Detroit, where he said he rather retire than move to the bench.

What duty is it for NBA teams to give handouts to 38 year old players who were stars a decade ago?
