was Allen Iverson forced into retirement? (very long read)

show me where he said RECENTLY he wouldnt come off the bench

show me these plenty of teams that gave him a chance recently

or are you talking the grizzles sixers fiasco?
Uhhh yes, that and Detroit is exactly what I'm talking about.  He hasn't said recently he wouldn't come off the bench after washing out with three teams because he wouldn't be a role player?  I must be missing your point.

I dig AI btw, just watched the 30 for 30 on his trial which was fantastic.  But the guy clearly made his own bed.  He wouldn't accept a backup role when he wasn't good enough to be a star, so the NBA had to give up on him.  Then he went to Turkey and washed out there.  Why exactly do all these teams have a duty to give him another chance?

Guys like Kwame and Derek Fisher still have jobs in the league because they know their lanes and how to stay in them.  I'm good at my job, but if I went in tomorrow and said "I'm good enough to be Chief of Staff, and I'm not working here unless I get to be Chief of Staff..."  I would be fired.  Duh.

Ai couldnt accept the fact that father time caught up with him, you cant play off pure talent your whole career, he really thought he was still a top 10 player during his detroit run, but once that money got slow it gave him a reality check

Allen Iverson was blackballed and it's obvious, Stern always hated dude

and point blank if derek ******g fisher and kwame brown are good enough for the NBA there is no way AI isnt idc if he was 40yrs old
if you replaced fish with iverson the lakers dont win their last two championships

AI and his ego caused a lot of this to happen.

It's comical how people make excuses for iverson despite his self inflicted downfall.

The biggest shame about it all is that he could've been an asset to that grizzlies team if he bought into what Lionel hollins was trying to do. If he came off the bench and produced which he likely wouldve do you really think he would've stayed on the bench. Imagine a more team oriented iverson willing to accept a lesser role on the 2011 grizzlies that upset the 1 seed spurs that year. Perhaps that extra spark gets them past okc and maybe even Dallas that year.

Like I said earlier, his negative attitude is what caused him to be undesirable late in his career. I wouldn't want his attitude rubbing off on my younger players who looked up to him as kids if I'm the coach of a rebuilding team. He's also past the point where he would put fans in the seats so it wouldn't work as a business move either.

What's sad is that if he bought into any type of team like concept, 2011 and even 2011 iverson would be a very coveted and sought after player who's services would be wanted by contending teams. Think grant hill on the suns in recent years and how productive he was at 38 or so and think about his previous status in the league. When the clippers signed him last summer a few teams were still interested. He was viewed as an ideal teammate though.

Now think about the role Jason kidd played on the 2011 mavericks, think about how garnett is still playing a key role on his team, Duncan, pierce etc. iverson could easily be playing a similar role like that had he went about things in a different manner.

Iversons later years are a tragedy both on the court where pride and ego prevented him from being either a solid veteran leader/mentor to younger players on a rebuilding team or a solid 3rd option or so that could provide instant offense on a contending team, and off the court where his life struggles have been noted. People can talk about how he was a jerk off the court but that's irrelevant to things. If he was a jerk off the court but a solid teammate and easily coachable, he could be the biggest jerk in the world and there would be a roster spot for him somewhere.

It sucks how the later years of his career played out but so much of it was a result of self inflicted damage.

Dudes will date a hot girl and will tolerate her diva act and all the baggage she comes with while she looks hot and damn near flawless but as she gets older and her looks start to fade away she becomes less and less desirable and her bad qualities that people once happily looked past are now much more scrutinized and noticed then they were when she was hot. That's a comparison to how iverson was seen in 2001 compared to how he was seen around 2011.

pound for pound doesnt mean anything in basketball where there are guys like shaq who are 4 times bigger than him

Wanted him to come off the bench, nope. Had some years since he last played professionally, wanted him to go to D-League to polish up, nope. Come to practice, nope.

Dude did it to himself the same way T.O. did it to himself in the NFL.

. Shaq was pound for pound a wack basketball player, would be the flip side of that ridiculous statement people make

You cannot polish up in the D-League. Please stop. These are guys who will never see the roster except for the rare few. If given an invite to training camp and preseason play, he'd have been more likely to play with a team while getting a chance to compete against a higher caliber player. The D-League constantly gets ran out of gym by Summer League teams.

Ray Allen.

Dead that 'blackballed' conspiracy crap.

i think this early retirement thing also has something to do with the year that he was drafted in, of that year we still have kobe nash and ray playing at a high level so it looks odd that he is no longer in the nba. but if he was drafted a year later (duncan, billups, tmac) it wouldnt be such a big deal because except for duncan all of those guys fell off around the same time iverson did. in most years iverson would have been the best player in the draft but he landed in a draft with not one but two players better than him (yes i would take nash over iverson any day of the week)

Dude...  Allen Iverson wasn't willing to play off the bench.  Those guys are.  Plenty of teams gave him chances to be a role player.

I don't remember Derek Fisher saying "I'm a former MVP, I don't come off the bench."
if iverson was willing to come off da bench he'd still be in da league right now.

Hakeem with the raptors in 01-02 came off the bench.

Not sure if Shaq started for the cavs and celtics his seasons there. I dont remember to be honest.

But the point being, you may have been a MVP in 2001 and that can never be taken away but your not at a MVP level in 2013.

Even so. The fact still remains that the dude aint got enough sense when to take on a lesser role and work hard to get in that starting rotation. This dude Ray holds the record for 3pters but he comes off the bench and aint talkin bout, nah, I don't come off the bench. GP came off the bench w/ LA if I'm not mistaken.

They say pride goeth before destruction and this is the result, with AI retiring

The cold truth right here.

i still dunno what stopped him from going overseas and just dominating chinese players for da rest of his useful playing life...

Foolish pride

He coulda been God in china though. Marbury got statues made of him. Iverson could've and probably still could make a few million doing his thing in china.

ray allen is not a better sg than wade

nash should come off the bench

name a MVP that came off the bench

That MVP was YEARS ago, Ray was coming off the bench in Boston too.

Nash is a pure PG that gets the ball moving and he gets others involve. Although now, maybe he should come off the bench if there's better options.

Point is, If A.I. would've accepted a lesser role he'll still be in the league.

I believe Shaq came off the bench in Boston.
