This morning I came across a feature on Noisey.com about Ka, a 40-year old MC from Brownsville. The article outlined the story of a man passionate about his art, and his craft, and though I can't say that I'm the biggest fan of his music, I can't deny its quality, and it made me mull over the idea of a man in his fifth decade who's a relative unknown in the rap game. Since age is such a hot button topic in hip-hop music, is this guy too old to be rapping?

Here's the link to the article (http://noisey.vice.com/blog/ka-will-not-give-up-1), and one to his website (http://brownsvilleka.com/), to give you a better idea of what he's about.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

Its one of the things I don't get when it comes to rap fans. I mean, I do get it but Its really not that serious.

Personally im a big fan of KA I copped his second and third album.

I like it.  Positive, not trying to front.  There's nothing wrong with a 40 year old rapper.  I listen to 40 year old singers too.  50, maybe even 60.  It's all good.  It takes a long time for people to lose their rhythm.

You bring up an interesting point with the bold comment. For some reason as rap fans we look down on old rappers. Even if they had success in their 20s and 30s we consider them washed up when they drop a new project I think it has something to do with the newness of rap as a genre, but it's totally different from other genres who laud their favorites late into their careers.

Even though Ka is "relatively new," I can't even see him getting the same respect for an "older, new" artist like Gregory Porter has in jazz. Definitely discussion worthy. I heard about Ka on The Combat Jack Show when Roc Marciano brought him up and then they mentioned him last episode, I'll definitely sample so more of his material.

Nothing wrong with 40 year old rappers, Jay-Z and Nas are still making bangers. And I'm sure a good amount of people will be copping Detox when Dr. Dre releases it at the age of 60.

If Jay Z still gets pushed to be on radio stations when his raps aren't a fraction of what they once were then I'd have no problem listening to a rapper whose style is new to me.

If anything I'd be more likely to listen to an old rapper cause they probably have a lot more to talk about than these stupid kids. That being said, I don't like this guys music.

most of da wu tang is past 40....

it used to matter..doesn't think it does anymore.

its gonna be a trip though when you go see your favorite artists live and they all got grey hair...lol

Hell people didn't think hip hop would make it this far. We got Jay, Nas have reached Rolling Stones level of longevity, they will always be able to out records and tour world wide. Same with Snoop, Wu-Tang, a lot of the greats. I will be going to Nas shows with my kids one day :pimp:

we follow each other on twitter. i'm a huge supporter of his music.

grief pedigree is fire.

there should be a thread or two on Ka somewhere in this forum too

True, but Wu Tang as a group is 20 years old.

The point of this post was more to discuss a 40 year old dude who is just coming on the scene now...

Interesting points that you guys bring up, I figured there would be a lot more hate in here. I'm curious to know the ages of everyone that posted...

I think rap is too young of a genre to even say what Old is.

The oldest/consistent/relevant success we have at this time is Jay.

Whenever he decides he is done will prolly be the new limitation. I hate that its that way though.

If your nice your nice. Period.

Edit: Heard the Bigavell in this guys vocals a little

Hip hop heads are getting older now.  We all listen to what we are used to hearing, that's why a majority of us who came up in the 80's/90's can't feel this **** these young boys are talking about.  Because we've grown and we've heard it all before and know these young dudes are fronting.

Well, I'll still be checking for the next GFK album, and GFK collabos (DoomStarks PLZ)

at it's very core, hip hop has always been about youth.  that doesn't mean older artist can't or shouldn't do it

but it's understandable why the intersests and attention span of the audience and the life span of the artists is the way it is given the roots of the genre itself

Speaking of age, I don't think it's a bad thing at all in this case. You can see a lot on earth in 40 years (Same can be said about younger years, but at 40, hopefully you'd have your head in the right place.)
Sounds like a positive song too.
