Realtalk, hate for Gay, the Kings, and Sacramento aside, what happened to Gay?

I remember a few seasons ago when he was relatively efficient and shooting at a good %age

Interestingly enough, the advanced stats guys hated him even before his traditional stats became this bad.  He shoots a lot of mid-range Js, which he isn't particularly good at.  

I'm not sure he was ever particularly good.

This. His ability got masked by his teammates. Gasol and Z Bo takes the focus off that. Homie guns and doesn't care 

For some reason, I remember reading a HS article on him in Slam back in like 2003 or 2004, and the one thing that I remember is him getting compared to Dominique Wilkins

no you're right. he actually did call Gay specifically.  during his season preview for Sac he said he thought they would go after Gay or Rondo

Nope, sometimes he actually tries to drive to the hoop which is an even more horrid decision because he beats no body off the dribble, then runs into players that are at the rim, and just throws up boo-boo.
