Warriors asst. secretly taped talks

When Golden State Warriors assistant coach Darren Erman was fired earlier this month, the reason given was a "violation of company policy."

It turns out that Erman's violation was secretly recording conversations between the team's coaches and players, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Sources said Erman, who was coach Mark Jackson's second assistant, would record coaches' meetings, meetings between the coaches and players, and informal discussions among coaches that took place in the team's coaches room -- all without the participants' knowledge.

"He was taping everything," one source said. "Taping pregame speeches wouldn't have been that bad, but he was taping guys just sitting around talking in the coaches' office."

Sometimes Erman would be present during the tapings. Other times, he would leave the room and leave his phone behind to record conversations the other coaches were having.

It is unclear what Erman did with the recordings. The sources weren't sure if he shared them with the club's owners or front office executives.

"Was he taping it for himself or was he taping it for management? That's not known," a source said. "But he had a lot of communication with members of the front office."

The Warriors' other coaches began noticing a change in Erman's demeanor and behavior in March, a source said. A few weeks later, they discovered that he was recording them. After being caught, Erman told the club he had been recording the conversations for three weeks. Jackson kept Erman on his staff for another week before Warriors' management fired him.

Erman's dismissal was the second bizarre event involving Jackson's staff in less than two weeks' time. On March 25, management demoted first-year assistant Brian Scalabrine to the club's D-League affiliate in Santa Cruz.

Sources say the move was made because Scalabrine exhibited a consistent pattern of disrespect toward Jackson and the other coaches. Mainly, he ignored and refused to speak with the other basketball coaches. At one point, Scalabrine went five weeks without speaking to Jackson, one source said.

Scalabrine even avoided the coaches on the team plane, sitting in a separate section, according to one source.

The odd behavior of Erman and Scalabrine is emblematic of the dysfunction that has recently engulfed the Warriors franchise. Despite winning 51 games and leading the Warriors to consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in 22 years, Jackson's job is widely rumored to be in jeopardy.

One source insists that Jackson's relationship with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Bob Myers is fine, which makes his shaky job status hard to understand.

Yeah, no defending this.

No. Has nothing to do with this collapse at all. Not even a little bit.

Seriously.

Trading a bench player when you're the top team in the east shouldn't affect you in this way, now when your losing to a Hawks team with a below. 500 record. At this point they'd lose in the first round to the Bobcats.

This is three months in the making, nobody should even be surprised at this point. They clearly do not like playing with one another.

Not sure how Vogel even gets a job at this point in the offseason. He has shown no ability to bring a team together during hardships.... FOR MONTHS

Pacers were never THAT good. Had the softest first half schedule I've ever seen.

They started feeling themselves and chemistry issues arose. So now we're here.

So are we giving CP3 another pass this year if they don't survive the first round? I can't. Funny how the Clippers players cry ignorant to knowing Sterling was a racist when I knew about it and Im just a random dude from the East coast. No excuse for a first round exit IMO.

So you're saying this isn't a HUGE distraction right now? You mean to tell me CP3 (player's union president) should be able to block all of this out, put the cape on, drop 25 pts & 15 ast, and carry them to the next round? Are we also going to sit here and act like GSW is a push over?

What's so wrong with a first round exit in this West though?

I mean seriously, do y'all not see the type of teams out there.

The series is 2-2. Chill. I know CP3 gets passes, but I've never believed that losing in the first round, especially in the West is such a huge fail.

GS isn't a pushover and this is a distraction but not an excuse for losing this series. We live in a world now where EVERYONE has a excuse for failure and passes are handed out left and right. Then us as fans turn around and wonder why the NBA is so soft now. I'm very interest to see what OKC fans say if they get bounced 1st round too.

Looking forward to Woj undressing the Pacers' situation in a few days.

Has to be some real crazy **** going on behind the scenes. Issues that the guys can't even get over when they are on the court. Wouldn't be shocked if there is some Jimmy Jackson/Mashburn/Kidd **** going on

There's no excuse though, the fact is the West isn't a walk in the park like the East. Think about it, top 3 seeds in the West are tied at 2-2 while the #4 seed is down 3-1. They don't have the luxury of playing teams like the Bobcats. Matter fact, we don't even know who's coming out of the West this year, it's that much parity.

It isn't once, in a vacuum. It is when you do it year after year with this kind of talent. Clippers are better than Golden State. They should win. The playoffs aren't going to be a pushover unless you're in the East.

Right now the Clippers are just the kind of team that loses when they play good teams in the playoffs. That simple. It's not supposed to be easy.

This. Basically what I'm saying. We keep letting Paul and KD off the hook for playoff failures there gonna end up with a tray of burgers with CWebb, LT and Berry.

Wow at the assistant coach recording convos :smh: no lie I'd wanna choke the life outta that fool

Mark Jackson needs to get outta GS...they trying to take that man down

Clippers/GSW spilt their season series, not sure how that makes the Clippers a better team

Well in my opinion they are better, especially without Bogut. Some might feel differently but at the very least they are even, right?

Shouldn't you be able to beat a team you are even with once in a while? Isn't that what the playoffs are about?

I can agree with them being even, but as we all know, things change in a 7 game series. Add in the fact this is a MAJOR distraction I'm not sure how much blame we can put on CP3 if this TEAM loses is all I'm saying.

The Clippers have been out the first round one time, and lost once while cp3 has been there.

So basically they're 1-1 for you first round Is everything guys..

They are heading back to LA tied with plenty of basketball left.

Chill

You're right.  It's not over.

I just want to see them actually contend, which they haven't done yet.  They have as much talent as anyone.

I like CP3 but considering I've criticized other players for their losing playoff ways, it would be hypocritical to defend him if he lost in the 1st again this year.

Yes, the West playoffs are hard.  No, you aren't going to play just teams you are clearly better than.  But that's what the good teams have to do every year.

*LeBron has never beat a team he wasn't superior to in the playoffs, but that's the luxury of playing in the East.

Your right it's on the team but we all know CP3 will take the most blame an if they deserve a pass it would be this season but it's a championship or bust type of year and team. The playoffs have been a lot more entertaining than I expected. East and West.

Fair enough. I feel the exact same way.

Agreed. I actually had them as my sleeper pick coming out of the West until all this happened :smh:

if only vogel used the 4th quarter lineup more against the hawks aka , watson/hill/george/copeland/west , you dont need stupid mahimni and hibbert against the hawks seriously and just rotate scola with copeland/west and stephenson+turner with watson-george-hill , stupid vogel
