i was gonna comment on it but i bet everyone was gonna call me a troll.

They wouldn't be lying, but I've commented on it and dudes in here are saying its based on potential.  Thats far too much for potential. A 2 year, 6 mill deal would have been enough till he proved himself

hes been in the league what 3-4 years? All i hear is potential but ive seen nothing yet. Sure he has a nice game every once in awhile but when will he come this great player he supposed to be EVERY night?

Be honest, you've watched very little of Derrick Favors play. You're talking like he's 28 and been hyped up for a decade He's been a rookie coming off the bench, this year is when he'll show a ton of improvements.

This may or may not have been brought up, but what has Derrick Favors done to deserve that 4 year/49million dollar deal?

He just gave you 9/7 with 2 blocks in just 23 minutes per game at 21 years old.

With Millsap gone, he'll be getting a nice bump in playing time. Something like 15/11 with a few assists & 2 blocks is well within reach. The only bigs to put up those numbers in the past decade are Dwight, Garnett, Elton Brand, & Yolo Bynum. Now he's obviously not as valuable as those guys, but his combo of skills is still rare.

I have no issues with that contract.

Like said, that contract is pretty much based on potential. It's a gamble that Jazz took that can be argued whether it's worth it or not. Personally, I think not.

I didn't hear anything about other teams interested in him, so I felt they should've given him a 2 year contract then talk extensions. Seemed like they overbidded against themselves.

If he would have been offered a 2 year, 6 million dollar deal he should have laughed in their faces, put up 14 and 11 with 2.5 blocks this year, then bounce when another team offers him a bigger deal. No one else was interested in him because he's on his rookie contract and it was assumed he would be extended. Had they not offered him a contract, then you'd hear more about it.

You pay for size, one way or another in the NBA. The Jazz would rather take a risk that he develops and sign a young big man while they have him. At the worst he'll be a 12/10 guy who will block shots and impact the defensive end.

You never know, I guess, because it could be a Gary Payton kind of a ring, where he's just a contributor to a good team, but not the main guy. But it is hard to picture him getting a ring on a team on which he's the number one option.

And why exactly is that? It's not like they're taking an extremely risky gamble here. You increase his minutes with Millsap gone & he's almost a lock to give you a double double with considerable defensive impact.

Or maybe his agent wouldn't even consider that offer because he expects Favors to be a double double guy with great defensive ability (which, again, isn't unreasonable based on what he's shown thus far) at just 22 years old. 22 year old double double bigs, who can also play D, will get paid 8 figures annually in this league.

Utah chose to lock him up now rather than wait after the season for another team to offer him a bigger deal that they'd be reluctant to match

The biggest thing to worry about with increased minutes is foul trouble for Favors.

its sad because he could easily do it if he cut out all his bad habits (shooting contested jumpers early in shot clock, lazy defense, poor rotations, hesitation to make the right play)

what he has to learn how to do is play smart efficient basketball for the first 3 quarters then dominate in the fourth when players are fatigued and there are more isolation plays.  coming out firing right away is fun to watch and results in a blow out when the rest of the team follow's suit, but when they don't it results in a close game where melo is usually gassed by the end and not as sharp.  i love the "run them out the gym" mentality but it often backfires.

basically he needs to save his best for last

You could literally say that about almost every player in the league.
