blake got back spasms? wasnt dwight dealing with that last yr. back spasms are no joke even if you built like mr olympia sick.gif
post #75242 of 132491
Dwight still hasn't recovered the athleticism that he had in Orlando because of his back, hopefully Blake's ain't that deep.

Clippers are done if Blake is not healthy lol. Poor Clippers if they can't get past second round. All that work so they can go fishing two weeks after the Lakers lol.

NBA need a new playoff format. No way Hawks and any other sub 500 Eastern team deserve playoff appearance over team like Phoenix, Dallas, Minniesota etc.

What would a better format ?? I have thought about that a lot of things have to change.

Imo just go by record. There will be normal West and East conference during reg season but when it's playoff time just group it 1-16th in term of overall record for both conference. That way some of the above .500 West teams like Minnie, Dallas can replace sorry below .500 team like Hawks, Knicks, Bobcats etc.

if they did a 1-16:

san antonio v minnesota
okc v wizards
indiana v brooklyn
clippers v bulls
heat v raptors
rockets v mavs
portland v memphis
warriors v suns

looks kinda dope

What would be the point of conferences/divisions then?

Spurs with the lowkey 17 game win streak, no biggie.
No point in division winners in that system. I think they should set it up like the NFL. 6 teams in each conference, division winners and wild cards. Top two seeds get a bye the other four play a one game playoff at the higher seeded team's arena. Every matchup thereafter will then be a 7-game series.

what the NBA needs is a new lottery system.. No reason to reward teams who are "tanking"… Where's the competitive nature in that? :{

Beverley, KJ, Decker, Harrell, Nene

Yea because it's possible to tell which teams are tanking and which teams are actually

Where's the competitive nature in a league that doesn't have competitive balance? You have to establish some degree of parity, you can never fully eliminate tanking but certain negative aspects of it can be minimized.

The best idea I've heard is, you freeze the records at the All-Star break/trade deadline and calculate lottery odds based on that. That's usually when teams decide to keep shooting for the playoffs or to self-destruct. Doing it that way removes the incentive to blow up your team midseason to position yourself for a high lottery pick.

That way you would also get more teams trying to play spoiler late in the season, which would make for a lot of interesting games down the stretch. Instead of rolling over, bad teams would continue trying to compete and entertain the fans since their lottery odds are already locked.

That's a good ideal but you know now the schedules would have to change because it wouldn't make since for conference side to play each other 4 times a year..spread it out and I bet travel would be a issue. Let's give the bobcats credit they made the playoff...lol

The NBA isn't helping their "competitive balance" by having a system where the 44-30 Mavericks would have a lottery pick while the 31-41 Hawks would not because of where they are geographically located.

I understand your disappointment but I think if you want it to be fair all across the board you must help the smaller markets more they would be able to keep star and be attractive for players to come. Its hard to change that the seeding process because that's not where the issue is. The East isn't strong as we think.

This has the feel of 2012 all over again. Spurs go into the playoffs hot, wipe out the first round and probably the second round. Then, hit OKC in WCF, who they match up horribly with, and get run out of the gym.
first off this was a point made by simmons while back, but a lot of the competitive balance issues have to do with the ineptitude of front offiices in the NBA, it just happens that many of them are in the eastern conference. Even after the past 2 CBAs made it harder for players as UFAs sign with other teams (years-wise and money-wise), and the "woe is me" small market whining (dan gilbert and "basketball reasons" indifferent.gif ) a lot of teams are still shooting themselves in the foot with terrible signings and terrible drafting and bad team planning.

just take a look at #9-11 in the east (new york, cleveland, detroit) and theres your perfect examples. its not a "large market" vs "small market" thing anymore. look at the playoff teams in the west, aside from dwight in houston there arent many major max-deal free agent signings in that group. good teams/contenders should be able to keep their stars (IMO lebron was a special exception because he WAS that team) add to that the fact major markets like NY, detroit, boston, and LA (both tanking, i know) in the west are not in the playoffs right now and the prohibitive CBA, you cant blame the money anymore.

basically what im saying is that parity would be great but considering the artificial steps the league has done to accomplish this, at some point these teams have to take a look in the mirror. also in any sport, there are winners and losers theres no escaping that. it just happens that this year the majority of winners are in one conference and the majority of losers are in the other conference. these teams dont need anymore saving, they need to smarten up and stop throwing 50 mil at josh smith. NBA darwinism. i dont want to give these idiots another way out of their messes by altering the lottery...as bad as atlanta is compared to dallas, dallas has to compete in a tougher conference and deserves that lotto pick IMO just as much.

also to those saying adjust the playoffs so its 1-16 best records, i dont think thats possible logistics/travel wise. it would be nice, but the conferences/separation is there for a reason.

A+

Another issue with this Best 16 comcept would be that you lose East coast viewers. Those 10PM Western Conference start times are so brutal. And the casual fan isn't about to stay up til 1AM every night for basketball.

Given the injuries and how competitive the West is, they've had one of the more impressive seasons in recent memory.

But then again, water is wet.

Didnt think it was possible but this season is right up there with last season in terms of how good its been. All its missing is like one more statement win and this coming week is full of chances. Indy, GS, and OKC
