Brace yourselves: @mentions are coming to NikeTalk.

i'd rather monitoring new users more closely if a wait period isn't implemented. some dudes troll from the jump

@Methodical Management posts are so professionally written and organized but he stays dropping subtle gems of humor. Reminds me of Breaking Bad where it's all serious but then something hilarious happens out of no where and you can't help but laugh

This should be a good addition to the site. Crazy how things have changed since I first discovered NT. I love this site

Forreal though, Meth is probably a wise, old head...

I always assume that people are my age (24), but I really wonder how it really is...

So what would be considered abuse?...and something that would warrant a ban, say its a heated discussion thread with say @Ninjahood and dudes keep calling out to him, like it usually is ALOT of times, would this be abuse of the feature?...I dig the development of te forums and the @ feature is awesome on IG...I always felt this will bring out a whole new type of troll here tho...hopefully not

Meth I just want an empty trash folder. It gets annoying seeing messages almost a year old in there.

Now it has, yes.
Then do what RealGM does: 90 day waiting period before posting in General (you can post everywhere else in the meantime). Beyond that, I'd suggest a minimum post count before being allowed into individual sports team threads (or league season threads). I know that's super-specific, but I bet General and team/league threads make up the majority of trolling on NT.
We can't set thread-specific restrictions like you're suggesting, but it should be possible to set up qualifications on a forum basis similar to what we've implemented for the buy/sell area.  My concern there is just messaging.  We'd need to make certain that this is communicated effectively the users who are confused as to why the reply/new topic buttons aren't showing up - especially for users who would not be "grandfathered in."

If anything, though, we'd started with a 30 day waiting period for General only.  We never needed more than a 1 month waiting period before.  It's something that we'll consider.
Some people are going to be to lazy to type out the whole name though. Most just cut it short.
(i.e.: Dirty, 23ska, ninja, steezy, etc..)
Nice feature though, #NT

On the desktop site, the @ feature will autocomplete, not unlike how this is handled on Facebook.  You won't need to remember the correct cryptographic sequence for ska's username.

Obviously anything used to disrespect another member is not permissible.  I don't need to fill in the blanks for you there.  The more specific we get, the more clever people think they are in trying to find a way around it.  If the intended effect is to humiliate or insult somebody, we don't want you doing it.  End of story.

What I'm more concerned about, specifically, is any form of abuse that "junks up" our forums.  Say, for example, you want to get all of your friends to pay attention to your post, so you just dump a big stack of @ mentions at the end.  Nobody wants to see that.  If it's used in a "spammy" way, we're gonna step in and clean that up before it becomes common practice.

We understand that the potential for abuse lurks within nearly every feature, so we'll need to be vigilant to preserve the look and feel of our community and ensure that @ mentions serve as an enhancement rather than a distraction.

No problem w/ the mentions, it'll work out better. Sometimes it gets tedious to quote multiple things in order to reply.

But uh, How about w/ these changes, we get another run of NT fitteds to commemorate this monumental change

doesn't bother me any.. I don't get them on twitter, so why would i get them on here?

Huddler's prepared a little primer for the new @mentions feature.  (Now I need to make sure nobody registers the name "mentions"....)

You already know the basics, but here's the full story from the developers:
If you're on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, you've probably noticed @mentions, and even used them yourself.  These little golden treats help connect you more directly with your fellow site members without having to do anything more than type a post - a post you're likely already leaving in the first place.  Super easy, right?  YES.

With this additional functionality, you might be wondering the best ways to utilize this for your life.  We've got you covered on the following topics:
  1. This is How You Do It
  2. Instant Gratification!
  3. This is How You Use It
  4. But I Don't Want To Know When I'm @mentioned
[h2]This is How You Do It[/h2]
Just like with Facebook and Twitter, @mentions will automatically be triggered in the rich text editor as soon as you type an @.  When you do this, in the rich text editor, you'll see an autocompleting username drop down from which you can select a username.

This will insert an @mention into your post which links to the user's profile.

The @mention itself is a single object so if you backspace over it, the whole thing will be removed from your post.

The @mention is also available in the BB Code editor, through a new editor button, appropriately indicated by the @ symbol.  This button brings up a dialog where you can enter a username.

In BB Code, users can also simply type the tags @ and around the username if they prefer.  On submit, this will turn into an @mention.

[h2]Instant Gratification![/h2]
There's another very important thing that @mentions do - they will send an immediate notification to the user being mentioned.  (You: "Shut the front door - that's awesome!")  They're a great way for users to communicate with each other and page each other in posts.  Huge engagement points.  Just imagine getting paged by a user you know.  That's an email you want to read and a post you want to respond to.  Here's what the email will look like:

[h2]This is How You Use It[/h2]
You can basically @mention wherever you'd like to your heart's desire, but you'll only get notifications of @mentions from posts, reviews, and articles.  So how do you get the most bang for your @mention buck?  Easy peasy.  Here are a few starter points:
  • Reading through a thread and find multiple users you'd like to call out as enlightening and helpful (or perhaps even misinformed)?  Reply as usual and @mention all of those users, letting them know you appreciated their posts.
  • Contributing an article to the site?  Awesome!  If you're including some member quotes from posts, reviews, or any other discussion, @mention them in your article so they're notified of their new celebrity.
  • Sifting through a long thread about a product you're thinking about purchasing, and you know you're fellow user was mulling over the same thing?  Perfect.  Make sure you @mention your buddy so they can get educated, as well.  Even leave some of your favorite member quotes about the product for helpful reading!
  • Have a question for one of the site's Industry Insider members on a current product or future prototype?  Guess what?  You can @mention them and ask some questions (or leave some love!), as long as they're a registered user on the site.
[h2]But I Don't Want To Know When I'm @mentioned[/h2]
For those of you who don't want to know about being mentioned, just go to your user preferences to disable the email notifications.  As with comment notifications and follow notifications, you can change your preference in the Account Details section of your profile.

So wait, how do we know if we're mentioned? Do we get notified?
For now, @mention  notifications are sent via email.  You can turn it on or off in your email preferences.

I know that many of you - myself included - prefer site notifications.  All I can say is that we'll be pushing for this and the more people ask for it the easier it will be to make that case.

Personally, my inbox is too crowded for this to be effective and I won't really notice @mentions until site notification functionality has been added.  Honestly, I wish it were otherwise - but this is just a starting point.

What's important for now is that the feature exists and the groundwork has been established for quote notifications and other improvements.  It'll be an iterative process, but if nothing else I'd like to think that we've proven over the past year that we will continue to make regular improvements to the site.

Your feedback is important and we'll be sure to make our recommendations accordingly.

Yea, the email notifications could be bothersome, but I figure if people route emails accordingly, it should be good. Also, I figure that would help those that aren't on NT as much as the religious ones . Another method could be notifications via PM.

Although, if they had a solid app for all smartphones that could utilize push notifications, that would just take the cake. but I'm just sayin

I never understood why its a @. I'm not speaking AT someone, I'm speaking to them.. I'll never get behind how people use twitter. That lingo is absurd.
