The M235i, no. A45 AMG is 0-60 in 4.6 sec last I remember and M235i gets there in 5 flat. Even though the A45 only has a 2L Turbo engine, it still produces 360HP in comparison to M235i's I6 with 322HP. Torque is about the same for both. BMW is about 100lbs heavier too.

I've seen a few A45's on the road and they sound incredible when they sprint off.

I would love one to feed my 'go kart with a rocket attached' love.

If it's not faster or better or more economical. I don't know why they even bothered to release it.

235 in particular. All of the other iterations make perfect sense.

I think that AMG released those 45's as a statement to their engineering capabilities. BMW generally has the last laugh when it's time for the 63 v M3 now 4 battle, I'm surprised they didn't try and trump Benz now with the 235. Unless there is a M2 coming shortly which I missed while skimming through this thread.
 
I may be in the minority here but I prefer the current 1 series aesthetics to the 2 series. Yes, the updated 2 series has a meaner look but I was one of the few who really loved the quirky design of the 1 series and it's similarity to the classic 2002. 

Sure, the above is the M, with a wider body and all, but you get the idea. Same boxy, raised roof look. The new 2 series looks too sleek for me.

Those numbers are pretty close though and I think the M235i is going to be cheaper since it isn't exactly an M car so not exactly in correlation with the AMG. Plus the A45 is still FWD iirc so a lot will be turned off by that, it is also a 5-door hatch while the 2-series is proper sports coupe.
 
While we already know most of the details about the 2 Series and its available M Performance parts, BMW has now announced that the Coupe will go on sale in the first quarter of next year with a starting price of $33,025 (*plus $925 for destination) for the base 228i. This price is about $1,500 more than the current 1 Series Coupe, which starts at $31,500, while the M235i's starting price of $44,025 is almost $500 more than the existing 135is Coupe.

Alongside its big brothers, the M3 and M4, the new M235i was rolled out by BMW at the Detroit Auto Show today as the sportiest member of the 2 Series range. The sharp two-door is the replacement for the current 1 Series, meaning the M235i is more or less the equivalent of the old 135is.

Underhood sits BMW's venerable 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, complete with 322 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Power is, naturally, sent to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, allowing the M235i to hit 62 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds when optioned with the automatic.

Prices start at $43,100, meaning the M235i should give the $47,450 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG a real challenge in terms of cluck for the buck, provided a second set of doors isn't needed.

Love the aesthetics from the front. 

HATE the rear. Very generic. Doesn't look like a german car from the rear. Looks more Korean. 

It's a good looking car but I feel like it's a bit too consumer friendly and lost it's distinction from say, a G37, accord coupe, etc etc, similar lines and hood that all car manufacturers are doing now. 
 
Is the M235i going to be available with X-drive? I'll be in the market for a new car soon... them Canadian winters though.

258 lb ft of torque at 1250 rpm is very very impressive. car should feel like a rocket
 
M2 confirmed via marketing materials. Expected to come to production this November and boast ~380HP from s 3.0 liter turbocharged engine.

M4 GTS also confirmed in there... hmmmmm....

The M2 has leaked

The smallest M BMW draws its power from the M235i’s 3.0-litre inline-six unit that was beefed up with 370 PS (364 hp) and 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) of torque. Moreover, the car also has an overboost function that increases the torque by 33 Nm (25 lb-ft).
