Did Ricky Rubio live up to the hype?

When Rubio is on the floor, he is truly special.

I love the Rondo comparison because all this kid does is put the ball in the hands of the open man for the bucket and he's an absolute pest on defense. Not great 1 on1, but he's so active on that end of the floor he ends up with lots of steals.

This thread is years too early. I suppose if Minnesota can go on this run we've all been waiting for then he'll have his coming out party once they get to the playoffs and consistently national TV.

This. Dudes were talking about one of the best big PGs ever and all sorts of stuff. I like his game though and want him to flourish.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves though, he was hyped but almost no one was placing him on possible best ever lists. If that was even remotely the possibility he wouldn't have fallen to the 5th pick draft night.

I've watched nearly all of Rubio's games, I'd personally say he has lived up to exactly what most were guessing say so far. Factor in his injury as well as his teammates being some of the worst shooters in recent NBA history and thus his stats decreasing.

I think his overall defense has been loads better than what we thought it was going to be. But he needs to improve his shot which is his greatest weakness right now.

He's an elite defender, I don't know why people soured on his defense pretty sure he won Euroleague DPOY.

Just the more physical style of the Euroleague, its was easier to exploit a 19 year old, and he hurt his ankle.

^ Complely agree. You should have heard it around Minnesota though, from what "basketball people" said we were going to have huge problems with his lack of defense and NBA PGs abusing him.

He was billed as a spectacular passer with an underwhelming jumper.

He has been a spectacular passer with an underwhelming jumper.

He's also been much better defensively than expected

got these because of him, my favorite adidas shoes ever

Steve Nash comparisons! Come on now. Passing ability, whatever, sure... but I can't get past the shooting comparison and solely off of that they're not similar.

Rajon Rondo is a good one.

This thread would be premature had Rubio played 82 games in every season since arriving to the NBA.

He tore his ACL when he was showing loads of potential and skill, finally got his legs back from February 2013 on, and now we are coming up on a pivotal season. Last February he averaged 14pts/7ast/6rebs. His shooting percentage took a dive in April, but that was just a 10-game sample size.

Like Osh/Paul stated, his defense is already refined and sound at an age most on here have passed long ago: 23. Look at his shooting percentages this year when you're rating him or trying to place him. It's something that was very solid during his rookie season, and part of the reason there was so much optimism stemming from that year.

I challenge people to watch Rubio on defense closely next time he plays your team. Dude has a sixth sense for that ****, seriously.

He could be prime Kidd status if he improves his scoring.

Way too early to tell. But so far he's not doing too bad.

But I'll admit he did surprise me when he first came into the league, I thought he was going to be a total bust.

Hes a talented passer sure. But rhat boy cant make a jumpshot well set shot to save his life. Nor can he check... anybody DT43. He can play passing lanes... because he has to. If his man takes it to the rack its over

Dudes a dissapointment imo. He has those highlight reel dimes but everygame i watch he jus turns it over and gets bodied.

Wow reading this thread multipleee ppl are calling rubio a good defender hahahah

No. No. No. Rubio is a good defender the way iverson was... he understands his shortcomings and plays to his strength. Hes def more iverson than gary payton.

Rubio is a GREAT defender, he uses his size and length to make up for his foot speed, he know exactly where to be at all times and has a sixth sense for causing turnovers, he is an EXCELLENT defender.

If you can't see that I don't even know what to say, you don't have to have elite foot speed to be an excellent defender.

Also Iverson became a good defender under Larry Brown.

People are letting his whiteness fool them into thinking he's a poor defender. Not just people in this thread, I've heard NBA announcers say it too.

Yeah that's a classic euro stereotype too

way too early to label him a bust, especially since he hasn't consistently stayed on the floor. when he has stayed healthy, he's shown flashes & a lot of potential. he's still young so he has time.

Naw i watch the games... he gets bodied.

He plays passing lanes well. He has long arms and he tries hard. Hes an average defender who gets taken to the rack at will.

He can't shoot. He racks up dimes nightly. He plays tough defense and creates turnovers. He involves his teammates.

The perfect point guard. :pimp:

this dude's court vision is on another level. he's far from great, but nowhere near "bust" status, whatever that may mean. whether he's having an on or off games, defenses can't fall asleep on the baseline when he's in the game
