Avonte Oquendo, missing New York City autistic teen UPDATE: RIP, remains confirmed as him

I really hope they find dude but its crazy how he has to be watched 24 hrs .thats gotta be hard to pretty much be your child's warden

That kid who took the picture couldn't tell the conductor or something? He couldn't have been the only one who recognized the kid.

There's another poster I see in stations now about an older Asian man missing too next to this kid's missing signs

when did they confirm it wasn't him? What is really odd is the fact that the 13 yr old asked him if he was Avonte, but the boy didn't respond to him.

Damn...hope by some miracle he's still alive somewhere

I couldnt imagine..

i don't blame the family for past woes. to raise a kid who suffers from severe autism is extremely difficult and stressful. not talking from experience but i can only imagine. my cousin has 3 toddlers and 2 are severely autistic (other one grew out of it it seems) and can't help but think about the strength needed to raise those kids, with this disorder. as for avonte, i would imagine that in 14 yrs, there can be a couple scares thrown the parents way.

not to compare the kid to a dog, but for some dogs, who like to run around and stuff and chase after something that simulates their curiosity, they could take advantage of that one time that door was cracked open. similar in a way to the child. i mean you wouldnt want to keep him literally on a leash or keep him in a locked room. but its hard to keep an eye on a kid 24 hrs for 14 yrs and not have a slip up.

unfortunately this time around, avonte dipped, and is still not found. after that story about autism and water posted on The Verge, im think NYPD needs to really hit up all bodies of water and check for a drowned kid. sucks to say, but read this and you'll see what i mean...

^interesting read btw.
Very interesting read. Thanks.

I'm having trouble understanding the attacks on the school system. Granted his running away happened on their watch, but he is prone to running away and has done so even when at home. I guess the way they reacted in assuming he ree entered the building was wrong; however I don't think we can expect all school employees to be fully trained and aware of how to handle a kid like this

His school is a special needs school. It is on the teachers and administrators.

From another article:
Walcott also said Avonte was supposed to be in a class setting of no more than six students per teacher, plus one paraprofessional (school aide). These settings are for students with the most serious disabilities.

But Williams said teachers or paraprofessionals are supposed to accompany the students to and from lunch, and other activities such as speech therapy.

"So that child should have not been out of the class alone,” he said, referring to the lawyer’s statement that the boy disappeared during a transition.

I take back my original statement they said his body was broken up due to decomposition (semi don't believe). The clothes have be confirmed as Avonte but they're running a DNA test on the remains right now.
