Update:

Fast forward three years, and now I'm in a city that has a very healthy appreciation for the arts, Austin, TX. I trust that I didn't land here by coincidence, so I need to take advantage of the fact that I'm in a city that I can thrive in with my abilities.

Currently working on a westbrook pic now, thinking about doing a drizzy piece next. I have ZERO excuses as to why I can't flourish either: no kids, job is hella flexible and me and my chick broke up right before I moved here. Been here 2 months and I've been bs'ing mainly Smh, time to buckle down. Open for suggestions of subject matter or marketing ideas.

Og post

I'm not young. I have had a good amount of jobs and I have realized that 9-5's are not for me. I'm talented in many ways, especially through my art work.

I'm going through tough times right now. I just lost my job Friday and I've been living check to check. Aggressive hustling is something I've never been highly skilled at. The closest and most successful I've come to progression through a face to face hustle was my phone rings venture, which some of you may remember. I stepped out of my comfort zone with that.

While immensely talented in certain areas, the business end is not one. I tend to lowball my prices sometimes because I don't want to charge people too much. I'm not a shark.

If any of you may know of any marketing ideas and or techniques let me know.

Here are some examples of my work.

art shows & instagram

find places in your area where you can display your art and direct anyone who seems interested in your work to an instagram account where they can see and purchase your art as it becomes available.

that's what a friend of mine does but the income from his art supplements his 9-5.

Yeah, I know it's going to have to be supplemental until I really get the ball rolling, I've got a retail job in the bag that I should be starting in a few weeks. I initially committed to part time, but I'm going to let them know that I'm available for more work now.

Yo man I like your art. When I get enough money can I commission you to make a piece personally for me?

Draw/Paint models/famous people

Tag them on IG/other social media

Send it to them for free

They post it and tag you.

Profit and potential yambs.

Record yourself doing the pieces and post it on Youtube/IG/Vine

For my fee I'd like this done :nerd:

Those are nice pieces my man, i would charge more than 150 for those.
You're a talented artist, I agree. But, MORE than $150.....??

Let the man have a fanbase first before people start feeling grimey....

Someone above made the great point of recording yourself and putting up on Youtube. People love that stuff, myself included.

And, they also mentioned sending some free work to celebrities you've done.....couldn't hurt.

Word of advice is to just stick with it......the life of an artist can be rough, but it may pay off in more ways than one.

I just moved to Houston, TX and I'm considering setting up an easel and do some drawings/paintings in hope that passers-by will patronize and inquire about prices or commissioned work.

I'm also going to have my dog with me, people love dogs, especially mine, so he will attract more people.

I'd love to hear recommendations of subject matter to paint. I want this to take off so I can go to my job and take-off, permanently.

Paint something about human interaction.

I know Iverson never won a championship, but imo he's the GOAT. Inspired me to get braids, even though my mexican family made fun of me.

Well you have great young peoples art. Here is my recommendation (and i have a marketing and sales background)....you need to reach ur local target market of 21 to 40 year olds.

Pick 3 great drawings you've made. Scale them down to 4 by 6 or wtv postcard size is. Put them as prints on that size. One side of the 4 by 6 is the art. One the other side simply put in the middle. Support a local starving artist. Wall art, coffee table art, gift art, and custom art. Put a link to ur work and an email address.

Spend 500 on this. Go to a popular area of a big city near you and hand them out to your target market. If you do not get quality leads doing this you may need to reassess your talent/and or people's desire for ur work. I am on my phone but from a glance that newspaper artsy thing u did looked great. That is something unique id consider using as a decorative piece or something to put on a coffee table.

Other thing u should do is find on google the emails of realtors and interior design people. Send them an email and see if they want to use ur work (for a fee) in places they are selling or renting.

You've got any other stuff done that I could check out? Would possibly be interested in picking something up depending on what it is.

I think a local outdoor market would be a great move for you.

Go out there with some works, spend some time going around the market handing out those cards that dude above described, and then work your booth and try to emphasize the themes of your work with other memorabilia that would catch people's eyes as well.

Definitely start at a swap meet or flea market.

Get in local conventions that match your target audience. ie sneaker shows, hip hop events, etc.

Put up an instagram with your art

link it to a QR code and put it on a sign with your artist's statement to display next to your art for sale

Personally, it's not my style, but I can see a potential market.

Do some prints, but do not give them away. You hand them out and some will end up on the ground and in the trash. Sell them for $10-20 and the real thing for 10x the print price.

LOOKS ARE FREE, BUT NEVER GIVE YOUR ART AWAY IF YOU'RE SERIOUS WITH THIS.
