Playoffs or bust.

Your 2013-2014 Washington Wizards have been assembled with one goal in mind:  to finish as a top eight team in a fifteen team conference.  It's an ambitious goal, for a team that finished last season in 12th place.  It seems less ambitious as a perennial goal, as perhaps the team's only goal since roughly 1980.

When asked why he would be willing to play for a Wizards team with no legitimate shot at the NBA title, the greatest player of all time replied, and I'm paraphrasing, "sometimes just making the playoffs can feel like winning a championship."

Only in Washington.

Perhaps that's why, in 2005, then-owner Abe Pollin printed up celebratory t-shirts when the Wizards upset the 4th seed Chicago Bulls in the opening round of the playoffs.  The team was promptly swept by the Miami Heat.  It was still, to date, the most successful Wizards season in my lifetime.

Ted Leonsis is feeling the heat - and not just because, on any given night, the Verizon Center houses more LeBron James jerseys than Wizards apparel.  This summer, Ted conceded that, "until we make the playoffs, I’ll say we’re getting an incomplete to failing grade."  Is he setting the bar too high?  Not if you consider a 'D' a passing grade.  By our standards, by Washington Wizards standards of excellence, a top 50% finish is a pass.  Achieving the desired outcome in 50% of your opportunities is a pass.

And that's what we are now, in the Leonsis era.  We are the "Dangerous Minds" students of the NBA.  We are the victims of tragic circumstance, low expectations, low support, and low funding.  A disappointing finish, for a spoiled prep student, is cause for celebration for us.  All we want to do is to make it into May, to graduate from the regular season.

Then what?

Playoffs or bust.

Can't we do both?  For three consecutive seasons, the Washington Wizards lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the opening round of the NBA playoffs.  We never secured home court advantage.  We never won our division.  We made the playoffs.  And that's all we did.

Is that all we hope to achieve in the John Wall era?  In the Ted Leonsis era?

Days before the regular season, the Wizards translated their biggest trade asset, the $14 million soon to be expiring contract of center Emeka Okafor, and a likely late lottery draft pick into a one year rental of Marcin Gortat.  This after maxing out John Wall and lavishing Martell Webster with a four year, $23 million contract (to spare you, my fellow 'D' students, some mental math:  that's $5 million a year or roughly $1 million per point that Martell will likely average now that he's playing behind Trevor Ariza and, perhaps, Otto Porter, Jr.)  Were these shrewd financial decisions?  Not particularly.  At least, not according to any analytic or logical assessment.  Each was considered essential, however, in achieving our ultimate goal:  to be slightly better than most of the teams currently tanking for Andrew Wiggins and thus qualify for a first round berth against a team with actual championship aspirations.

After examining a roster with zero front court depth, the Wizards chose not to bring back Jason Collins, who, according to "anonymous" sources speaking on behalf of equally brave GMs, was feared to be a "distraction" due to his conspicuous courage.  (We can't have equality getting in the way of a .500 record.)

It's not all bad news.  In Al Harrington, the Wizards actually managed to attract a notable veteran free agent for the league minimum.  The club boldly declined the fourth year options of both Chris "Powerball" Singleton and catastrophic bust Jan Vesely, leaving the team with a frightening amount of cap space to be capriciously squandered this coming off-season.  We bade farewell to the streaky A.J. Price and the affordable (considering his name) Cartier Martin.  Oh, and Bradley Beal grew an inch.

Earlier this summer, the Wizards parlayed lottery gold into Otto Porter, Jr., a player widely heralded as perhaps the most NBA-ready member of the 2013 draft class and who, after roughly 65 minutes of exhibition play, is already being condemned as a failure.  (We gave Jarvis Hayes four years.  We can't give Otto four games?)  A draft day trade also snagged Glen Rice, Jr., who's seemingly impressed everyone but Coach Wittman and now looks to spend more time on the bench than Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The injury bug is in full effect.  A strained hip flexor has sidelined Porter.  Something's always wrong with Nene.  Eric Maynor is apparently still recovering from his 2012 ACL surgery.  A neck injury has managed to transform Emeka Okafor into a lanky Polish man.  We've got plenty of excuses, but none of them are acceptable now.  On the eve of the 2013-2014 NBA season, the word has come down and the curtain has gone up.  Mediocrity or bust.  Anything less would be failure.

Let this be the last year of Ernie Grunfeld.  Let this be the last year of Jackson Heights' own, Mr. Randy Wittman.

Let this be the last year of low expectations.
Let this be the last year of "playoffs or bust."

How about a name change from Wizards? I have the Wizards then the Raptors as teams most in need of name changes. I like you guys jerseys and DC motif a lot but that logo is reminiscent of clip art shovel ware from the 1990s.

my thoughts exactly good start to the thread meth. Excited for basketball to finally be back

Man first game against the pistons, im already nervous one loss and it can snowball this team to the bottom of the conference

I just hope Jennings is in yolo mode and shoots them out the game

:smokin NBA basketball tho, it actually crept up on me tho this season

With DC sports being SO poor right now, it's funny that I'm actually looking forward to the Wizards. Let that marinate for a second.

I've got high hopes for this team, though. IF healthy, there is no reason why they shouldn't finish around .500 and get a playoff berth.

Will be one of my League Pass teams this season :pimp:

Ready to see Wall & Beal, now Gortat.. Feel like since he has offensive skill, he's going to eat running with Wall.

Wall bandwagon will be crazy by seasons end

This is the most optimistic I've been about the team in years. If everyone can play at least 70 games I think they'll finish with around 44 wins.

If Beal plays the entire season the way he played the preseason and if Wall plays the way he did to finish last season they can win 46 games.

Not expecting much in a possible playoff series. Winning one game will be satisfying to me

Funny how I'm becoming more identified with this team than the Lakers when I'm really a Lakers fan but a wiz supporter. Or is it possible to be a fan of two teams? Excited for the season

In thinking...when did Otto develop his hip problem?

If ends up missing 1/2 - 3/4 of the season (in hindsight), would it have made more sense to draft Nerlens Noel knowing that this was essentially a redshirt year for him?

LETS GET IT!!! ITS GAME TIME

I was at that game last season and take it easy on Ol' Buckhantz....half the arena, from where we were sitting, thought it was a GW as well. Weird angle versus depth perception.

Weirdest feeling I've had at a basketball game.

I've seen a lot of the same familiar faces talking Wizards over the last decade.....the number hasn't grown too much, but after this season....I expect simple mathematics to start increasing the number of supporters and fans.

I won't even argue the notion.

Cheers to you all.

Injuries aside, there's no real reason why this team should miss the playoffs. Incompetence isn't a real reason. Wittman has quality post players, wing shooters/defenders, and a franchise point guard at his disposal, but he himself doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. I know injuries crippled the team last year, but he didn't exactly excel in the things he could control. The rotations were poor, the basketball wasn't fluid, and clock management left a lot to be desired. And now it seems his man-management is of concern. There were quality coaches available this summer (SVG) , but as far as I know there were no inquiries.

Natural pessimism aside, I'm looking forward to this season. Entertainingly written preview, Meth.

IMO, absolutely. Consider one of Otto's biggest + marks was his NBA ready game. If he can't even play, that positive becomes irrelevant. I don't know if they thought about it or not, but I felt Noel's immense potential as an interior/help defender alone should have warranted serious consideration anyway.

Whittman was terrible last year with rotations, lineups, timeouts, pace, press conferences, etc.

I'm hoping he learned something this off-season and can help guide this young team to a decent season.

I think if/when healthy this team can be a 5th/6th seed.

You don't start off as poor as they did last year and finish where they did. I went to games last November for Twenty-Seven Cents and I saw better middle school teams play basketball. By March/April......it was a complete transformation.

Ready :pimp:

Anybody Going To The Phone Booth For The Home Opener Friday?

I'll be there. Long-time wiz fan (since the mid 90's Bullets era), don't post often outside of JB forum/General, but want to be more involved in the convo. Hopefully we can start the season off on the right foot tomorrow night (although I won't hold my breath) and take some momentum into the rest of the season should we pull out the home opener against the Sixers (fingers crossed).

Excited to see Nene, Gortat, Beal, and Wall play together at (and obviously Otto), but hope to see some long term structuring in an attempt to land quality FA's in the next 2-3 offseasons...

Always good to see another fan/supporter in the thread. There isn't many of us, but I expect some expansion by the end of this year.

I'll be on NBA League Pass watching the Wizards from out West. I might fly back to the area and catch the 11/18 Game against Minnesota though.

I really hope that Otto pans out. I'm pulling for the kid. However, I'm really curious about when the hip problems were diagnosed.

I agree they should have went in a different direction coaching wise, but people said that Wittman deserved another year. Anyway we shall see if these boys can create enough offense to win some games.

Anybody Going To The Phone Booth For The Home Opener Friday?
I'll be there section 107!!!

This Porter injury is bizarre.

It went from being "unlikely to play the first 2 preseason games" to missing all of camp/preseason with no timetable for return.

Not the way I would have liked his career to begin. He got an MRI today. Interested to see what the results were

 This is the Wizards, aren't you used to that happening by now? I have never heard of our medical staff accurately diagnosing an injury.

In thinking...when did Otto develop his hip problem?

If ends up missing 1/2 - 3/4 of the season (in hindsight), would it have made more sense to draft Nerlens Noel knowing that this was essentially a redshirt year for him?
I wanted Noel.

We still have no big man prospect and won't for next season either, that troubles me.
