I joined a Fraternity VOL. Rep your Fraternity/Sorority

Alumni chapters are organized to allow members to continue partaking in events after graduation. It's structured and has officers and such and also assembles events. Individuals who didn't join in college have the opportunity to join an alumni chapter.

They usually ask why you did not join in college. It has to be a sufficient reason. (School doesn't recognize fraternities/sororities, they weren't active, they were suspended the whole time you were a student, they were banned, etc.) and of course, you need a degree, hence the name Alumni Chapter

Yes, joined the same organization as op in 05. I'm no longer affiliated however. I have mixed feelings about bglo's. They don't exist for the same reasons they were founded for and have become a bit of a novelty & popularity engine. The pledging process supposedly recreates the struggle that the founders endured, but I'm sure there are vast differences.

What's the weather like over in Bowie/Mitchellville? :nerd:

The weather sucks out here it's cold now. But if you looking to come let me know.
You a fool for charging ole boy up.

I am in Pi Kappa Alpha.

It was fun. The 'anti fraternity' mentality is lame, let people live. I joined cuz my best friend did. Outside of money lost, I don't really regret it. I still kick it with some if my fraternity friends, meet way more girls than the people I knew not in fraternities ( of course there are exceptions) but trust when I say, for girls the benefit is there. If your not in a fraternity, even if you're there everyday, you see a snapshot if what it's like, there's so much more than non-fraternity people see.

It was a 'traditional' ... White... Fraternity, largest house on Kstates campus.

I'm black, if that matters.

Congrats.

I see no point in ME joining a frat.

I feel like it's buying friends. If I'm apart of

a brotherhood I want it to be a natural one.

Like my actual brothers. We genuinely care for each other.

I'm just not that interested in joining something that

did not have me in mind during its inception, ya know?

Whether I join or no it doesn't matter to them.

And I'm definitely not subjecting myself to hazing for something

I'm not passionate about. And as far as that goes, if you subject yourself

to hazing you can't tell me you have your dignity. You don't.

That also means you can never say you don't care what people

think of you. Outside of hazing would you let a man spank you or

any of these other absurd things? Probably not, but because a sect

of society accepts and celebrates the reasons for these actions, you're okay with it.

And honestly all that is simply ******** to ME.

Student at IU (founding fathers of Kappa Alpha Psi) got a lot of homies that are Kappas and others. I rushed my freshman year but that **** isn't for everyone. A lot of dudes join frats to be "someone associated with something", and others really look to help out in the community/network.

Hopefully you guys are the latter. I myself find it just as beneficial to have friends in the frats rather than being a part of it. Shoutout to all the #bros because them frat parties aint no joke

Well said. Not very well typed.

I concur. I don't need to jump through artificial hoops with my brothers. We got each other's back because of the times we've had and the loyalty forged through such time. I have 4 brothers that I'd ride or die with; we fam. **** a frat.

Yeah, you can say that frats do community service and there's a sense of bonding through the time you spend at school and what not... but you can do all of that **** regardless.

I've known my boys since the 7th grade. Sucks you gotta pay dues and sleep in a filthy sausage-infested house to belong.

Not hating, congrats homie! Hope you enjoy your experience!

One plus for most frats, however, is the accessibility of yambs. Hope you get yambs.

In my opinion this is more of a reason to join, if your father was a brother of a fraternity on your campus. It shouldn't be the ONLY reason, but it should help further aid one's decision to do so.

Most people I know, join the fraternity/sorority that their parents were in. It's just the right thing to do. At least in the black community.

I know people that had to go through an alumni chapter because the chapter on campus during their undergrad was suspended, inactive, etc.

I joined Phi Delta Theta my sophomore year.

Not a member anymore because I don't have the extra cash for it and my priorities aren't partying.

Wow, a lot of hate for Frats/Sororities on here. I'm not sure if it's like that on the West/East coast since most of NT members are of places of that sort, but down South we get a lot of respect down here.

Anyways...Spring 11, Zeta Xi of that 2 Live Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Where my Ice Cold Bros at? We just won our school's stepshow this past weekend. Can't tell yall how much of a great feeling that was.

I'm from Houston (The South) and I go to an HBCU: Howard.

All of this is just personal preference.

What are the benefits of a frat? What are people missing out who choose not to join?

never had a prob w/ folks in frats....

What are the benefits of a frat? What are people missing out who choose not to join?

Depends on the organization. There are general pros and cons like a bigger network, developing professional skills (a la Roberts rules of order,) etc...but where you see the finer details of the pros vs cons depends on what type of person you are. And each chapter within an organization is different. Some focus on community outreach, some focus on partying, others on academics. The best way to figure out if it's for you is to talk to the people involved around your way and ask them what they feel.

If you got enough friends in frats, and they have seniority, you can reap all the social/party benefits without joining.

I was like an unofficial member of about five frats junior/senior year at school because I knew how to party. Even "closed" parties, I was in there. I've banged girls out in random rooms of frat houses and I'm pretty sure one of them thought I was actually in the frat

It is funny as hell when a brother you don't know recognizes you're an outsider and calls you out then your friends, his brothers, back you up and say you're cool. Some dudes get straight HEATED when they see you partying in their house and flirting/pulling sorority sisters and you didn't go through pledging or anything like that. At the same time they can't tell you anything when you got numbers backing you with your friends in the house, especially if they are older.

Just goes to show that real friends > friends you pay for.

I have nothing against fraternities though. They have been great to me and I know a lot of good people in them. Just have no need to ever be a member personally. Rather party at all of them then be stuck at one. Let's face it, they throw great parties. The women go especially hard at the themed parties.

Side note, if you aren't in a fraternity, stay away from girls who ask what house you're in before they even remember your name. Those are the stupid ones caught up with the nonsense. Easy smangs though, if you are in a house they hold in high regard. Every frat has groupies they share, they're easy to spot.

EDIT: I'm speaking strictly on partying at frats. I do realize that isn't the only aspect of fraternities. I know people that seemed to only be in them for that reason though. I also know people who have benefited greatly from their alumni relations and community service. It's all what you make of it as an individual it seems.

People that hate on frats seem to do it because they don't understand that world and put too much emphasis on the stigmas associated and the negative things.

Don't judge someone just because they are in a frat. Always look at a person as individual first, always give people a chance. But, if you meet someone and all they have to talk about is their frat and don't seem to be a very interesting person themselves, well, it's because they probably aren't.
