I'm currently in school majoring in Criminal Justice with the intent of being a cop in the near future. I hear a lot of people telling me an associates can take me just as far as a bachelors can. Is there anybody working in law enforcement here that can help a young buck out?

Prepare for your crucifixion my friend.

Police officers are considered the scourge of society on NT.

From my understanding Criminal Justice is a ****** major if you dont already have employment in the field. From what Ive heard there are many things that can prevent you from actually turning your degree into a job (i.e. local police department looking for certain candidates). If you have connections it will help.

Pretty sure you need a bachelors to be a state trooper

And this thread is gonna derail faster than the train in Unbreakable

Nah, 60 credits is required to be an NY State Trooper... Maybe different in other states but NY has one of the most grueling Acadamy's for Troopers so I'd imagine more require just the 60 credits...

I took the NYST entry exam last month... Waiting another month or 2 for results.  Hoping I can get into an academy, this is my only chance for NYST since they won't be doing another exam until 2017 or 2018 and I'll be 30+ by then and unable to take it again.

I am going tomorrow to take the civil service exam for the Baltimore PD.

I just failed the drug test for the Pittsburgh Police smh, damn hair follicle test

How far you get will depend on who you associate with.

Know friends who are cops, they didn't go the criminal justice route simply because they want/wanted something to fall back on once they got tired of being a police officer. It's not for everybody.

Fall in line and you will be fine. Think for yourself and you will make a lot of enemies real fast. Politics are heavy, especially amongst those on the lower rung of the totem pole.

How far back can those tests detect? I wouldn't have anything to worry about unless its multiple years.

I live in TX if that helps. Austin to be more specific. Since Austin is growing so fast they just opened up the academy to anybody who has a HS diploma after passing all the requirements

I've thought it about it long and hard and I'm 100% sure that this is what I want to do

Dudes making it sound like I just opened the floodgates to the underworld

I'll say this, when I was talking to some of the cops involved in the hiring process, they told me that they actually prefer that their recruits major in ANYTHING other than criminal justice.

Reason being, you'll learn all that stuff in the police academy, majoring in something else will help you bring a more varied skill set to the table

Yup... Same thing I hear from my guys in the NYST.  Lt. level guys working in NYSIC and Anti-Terrorism... Take some CJ classes but major in something else and you'll be good.

Good looks brehs

What exactly does a degree in Emergency Management do OUTSIDE of law enforcement tho?
