i've told this story at least 3 times on niketalk.. bear with me if you've read it already. my favorite bill walton moment is from "the flu game" - game 5 of the 1997 finals, bulls at jazz. i have it on dvd so i've seen it a lot.


a visibly exhausted michael jordan rebounds his own missed free throw (off a toni kukoc tip), dribbles around, passes into pip, gets the kickout, and drains a 3 for the lead. bulls are up with less than a minute to go. stockton takes the ball upcourt, and executes perfectly, driving in quickly to set up ostertag for the jam. there's about 20 seconds left on the clock - the ball is inbounded to pippen, and karl malone stands there, just looking at him, waving his arms.

I still remember the first time Bill did a game his son was in. Luke checked i and Jon Saunders was like, "Bill, I'm sure you know a little something about this guy checking in for the Lakers," and Bill in his serious voice (while obviously joking, which is what makes him great) was like "Yea John, 6'9 forward from Arizona."
