2014 NBA Draft Thread

I like the Ryan Anderson comparison more than Dirk.

First calling somebody a shorter Dirk is basically calling him not Dirk, a big reason why he's so effective is his height.

He's got elite shooting ability and great footwork but I don't think he can ever be the focal point of a contender offense like Dirk no matter how innovative a system you put him in.

He can be a 50/40/90 guy which is good enough.

A Ryan Anderson clone would be a good thing tho. Long as he's not Adam Morrison, and is surrounded by other talent and not expected to be a main guy, he'll survive.

I just wish people would stop with comparing people to Dirk. Calling Doug Dirk is just lazy. Doug was great this year but he is 22 and dominated against a horrible conference. He'll be Ryan Anderson like I think.

I don't think it is at all, Doug is a really unique guy, his ability to post up separates himself from pure pick and pop guys like Ryan Anderson.

The ability to turn over both shoulders, his footwork, feel for positioning his body and getting his shoot off, the one foot step backs,

I have no reason to believe that those skills will evaporate when he gets to the pros, unless the coach makes them evaporate.

He can never be as good as Dirk because of his height, but he totally has the skills to play a similar style of basketball, all it takes is one smart coach.

i could see doug mcdermott a glen rice type player

aaron gordon is gonna be a hustle type player. i really dont see the blake comparisons

A lot of the reason that worked was because he played in a subpar conference. Going up against elite athletes I think he'll have a much tougher time posting up.

he gave Shawn Long excellent athlete that work.

Cleanthony Early and them witchita boys got it to the tune of 41.

Look I don't see a good shooter, or a great shooter, I see elite like once in a generation shooting talent, combined with impeccable footwork and touch around the rim.

Like I said, If you want him to stand in a corner and shoot threes he can and will, but if I was a coach I see so much more, he's a shot maker, and has the kind of scoring instincts you can't teach.

i could see a brandan wright type player. long, athletic, solid defender
better motor, ability to dribble and can guard the out top. his floor is like a gearld wallace and who knows what his ceiling is. I don't know him personally but if his game doesn't translate in the L, it wasn't because of a lack of effort or heart. and payne will be nothing better than a marreese speights in the next level. I wouldn't be surprised if he's out of the league in under 3 years.

Blake/Marion hybrid is a possibility.

I only hope he can score like Marion but I wouldn't bet on it, everything else though.

Not comparing him to Blake just because they are both beige, Blake was a lot better offensively coming in.

While I have some concerns about Gordon's offense, let's not forget Marion benefited in huge part to playing with elite PGs during his prime, played on fast pace teams, had nightly mismatches to go with being an elite athlete and all out hustle player like Gordon projects to be. Marion had those weird flip shots that are damn impossible to master though.

Safe to say like with just about all prospects, Gordon's success will depend on the team that drafts him.

darrell arthur? speights? udonis? horry?

how do you think he will pan out? i think he is nba ready physically and could contribute minutes right away.

He reminds me of Horry and the Morris twins.

Anyone see comparisons between Kendall Marshall and Tyler Ennis? Not athletic, couldn't shoot, but 1s with good court vision.

Different type of players, Kendall Marshall was a non scorer he averaged bellow 10 points, also a different type of passer, much higher risk, court general vs court vision. Tyler is about decision making, Kendall was more about vision.

Also Kendall is much slower, less athletic.

think a poorer mans Mike Conley, very good at a lot of things, not great at anything.

also Tyler has much better shooting mechanics, 77% from the line leads you to think he will improve.

Yea, their foot speed is COMPLETELY different even though both are average athletes. Ennis has better body control with finishing, but Marshall better size/strength. Agreed on vision versus split second decisions too.

Ennis could become a better athlete with the right training, at least he's already a great decision maker.

Also better going to the rim than Marshall, hope he becomes a 40% 3 point shooter like Marshall has though.

Randle :pimp:

He might not be a great defender but he's going to get buckets and rebound at a high level in the league. I like the fact that he's as strong as a lot of NBA 4's already and has about 2-3 years of growth left.

And we disagree on Gordon — he’s Shawn Marion 2.0 with a dash of Blake and a dash of Kirilenko thrown in. I came around on Gordon the more I watched him. Crazy athletic, good hoops IQ, super-competitive. I’m in. By the way, Marion 2.0 is no joke — we just got 15 years and counting from the Matrix.

From Bill Simmons, which may, or may not help the argument.
