The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- O’Malley v Vera on NOW

First round hunt.

Here comes the ko.
yea it was coming

Regardless, it'll probably be a ratings winner for Spike/Bellator. The "people's" main event was Brooks/Chandler.

Seems like a knock out of a night.

I'm pissed at myself for watching this Bonnar/Tito fight. Its just like that Stallone & De Niro movie about two old boxers fighting. Terrible.

Werdum impressed me. That KO knee seemingly came outta nowhere. Hunt was building momentum and Werdum felt, respected the power.

I can't tell if Werdum let me down to start that fight or if I should give Hunt major credit for buckling the favorite twice with bombs.

I do feel like I'm definitely more excited about the Werdum/Cain fight than before tonight.

Dat Cordeiro trained knee and dat Cordeiro influence.

I don't think Werdum has a good chance against Cain. After the mauling of Cigano TWICE, I'm like the only real threat in the division was Cormier and he was on some friendship ish and ducked to LHW. I will say he did have beef with JBJ.

HW is pretty shallow. Probably the most shallow next to the women's division. I'm not discrediting the champions as they're both amazing. It's just the gap between them and their competition is semi wide.

"Ducked" is the wrong word, even if you believe D.C. is practicing misplaced AKA loyalty. Team Alpha Male essentially did the same with Faber and Mendes, and now Dillashaw in the fold. Allegiance to your training camp.

UFC 180:
Garcia was extremely loose and nonchalant with his neck. Urbina almost sunk an anaconda choke prior to the guillotine.

Heatherly is a pretty tough dude. Hostile environment, absorbed substantial punishment prior to the finishing knees. You could see his face in pain when Montano drove a knee deep into his solar plexus.

"Bully"! That's what I was hoping and expecting to see. Despite winning 4 of his last 5 fights now, Lamas hadn't looked great until the Bermudez sub. Lacked some killer instinct in my estimation. Fought safe against Aldo. Stiff jab, well-timed to put Dennis down.

Gastelum is well-rounded. Not a fan, but the wrestling background is clearly evident. Rained strikes from top position, that accumulated just under Jake's right eye. Almost got suplexed, reversed on Ellenberger. Quickly sunk in the two hooks for a deep, deep RNC. Ellenberger may have a better future in an announcing career for FS1.

Hunt got out hot with thunderous power. Overhand right just missed, he pushed it wide left from Werdum's left ear. I believe he was backing up or moving with the short uppercut, didn't generate maximum power. Kept yelling for Hunt to not fall into Werdum's guard, dangerous position. Second round I felt was going well for Hunt more of the same, keeping Werdum at distance fearful and respectful of power. Werdum was unable to shoot the double from so far away. Hunt just didn't see the knee.

Agreed. Rashad/JBJ initially. Jacare/Machida/Anderson.

You can see the possibility of Faber/Dillashaw because of the strain between Faber and Ludwig. But now that Cruz is back, it kind of puts that on the back burner. Of course, Barao is still around too.

And Duck is the wrong word. He stepped to the side and switched divisions. The UFC was going to eventually grant him a title shot due to the shallowness of the division. C'mon, Silva/Velazquez twice.

Anyways, Will Brooks seem to be the big winner of the night. Chandler can't try to say it was controversial or anything.

You're absolutely right about the shallow HW division. Dana has a problem on his hands after Cain faces Werdum. Does "Cigano" deserve a fourth fight just for beating Stipe? Browne just lost to Werdum, as did Hunt. Does Browne deserve a crack for beating Schaub? Arlovski only has 2 wins since rejoining the UFC.

Please, no more Cain/Cigano. Three times is enough.

Barnett could be groomed into a contender despite his loss to Brown. And Brown only lost to Werdum. Maybe if he were to mount a 2-3 win streak. That would place him like 8 or 9-1 in the UFC.

Seriously, DC moving down really hurt the division. And it obviously delayed the rematch we DO want to see.

That's the dilemma. Give the fans a fourth installment because JDS is perhaps most-deserving, or provide the viewers something new although someone like Browne may not be worthy just yet.

Man, I was shocked Werdum's standup improved enough to work Browne with his striking. Even taunting him. Changing levels, breaking ribs, all that.

Conor threw some shots at Lamas already. That division actually needs **** like this.

Kind of like HW where with 1 exception, there don't seem to be many, if any legit title contenders.

I can't remember ever not wanting Edgar to win a fight. But I kind of want Cub to take it next week so we at least get some kind of fresh blood against Aldo (which isn't even really fresh given that Aldo already washed him).

Frankie's fight with Aldo was like Chad's. Somewhat competitive, but still decisive. And seeing Aldo beat the same guys over and over again.....I'm just not interested.

Now that Bermudez lost, the struggle for contenders that Aldo hasn't already beaten in that division is real.

Conor seems to be all that's left. And I'd still like to see him fight one of the top 3 (Cub/Edgar/Mendes, maybe Lamas). The way Rumble and Gus are fighting. And Romero and Jacare are before their shots.

Lord help us if Siver pulls off an upset  It's bad enough that he may get a shot at the title off that win.

As stacked as 155 is, I'm hoping Aldo makes that move soon. Barao then moving up to 145 would bring some excitement to that division.

HYPED for Frankie/Cub next week. Really the only fight in that division I've actually WANTED to see.

181 2 weeks after that :smokin

illphillip illphillip :
Forgot which side you're on for the Frankie debate, but I'm picking Edgar by decision over Cub. So well-rounded, championship experience, granite chin. Also looking forward to a finish in Green/Barboza and Benavidez giving Ortiz that work. Only one he can't beat in the division unfortunately is the champ, "Mighty Mouse."

That Boston January card is looking so tempting. More for "Bendo," for me than "KoD."

Treat to end the year. UFC 181 and the JDS Fox card are two of the best in all of 2014.

Frankie is my dude. Since the Griffin fight. Agreed that all in all, I think his skillset is a bit better than Cub's.

I just don't know that a fight with him against Aldo would be much different than the 1st.

I think Cub's fight with Aldo could (BETTER BE) different than their first.

So even though I'm a much bigger Edgar fan, I'd rather see Cub get the next fight against Aldo.

So basically, I am torn

The debate was who deserved the #1 spot: Edgar or Cub (outside of Mendes)

Edgar going to decision Cub but if Cub can get by Edgar, I'd love to see a rematch with Cub/Aldo. Cub a completely different fighter from the flash KO fight with Aldo. A win over a gritty Edgar would catapult his confidence even higher

Glad to see the optimism for Fight Night 57. Also keep an eye out on Doo-Ho Choi on the prelims, serious power at 145. Let's see if it translates to Lightweight. He was supposed to fight Sam Sicilia at 173 but picked up a knock. Technically should be undefeated, don't feel he lost to Kagiyama. But that's pure semantics.

It sucks to say it but the best thing that could happen for the HW division would be for Cain to be out longer than expected with his injury, missing Dana's March deadline and stripped of the belt. Then you'll have a lot of guys that would actually be contenders for the belt and have a chance at winning. But as long as Cain is champ and healthy, no one really has a chance.

I only caught Tito/Bonnar last night, and good god that was a mess. Really need Cub and Frankie to cleanse my MMA palate next weekend.

Hunt must be pissed.

Werdum caught with an excellent shot but he was bossing the fight up until that point.
