The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

I don't know if he thinks he'll do better at 170 but Benson is huge for 155. Every time he fights, Rogan and Goldberg mention it. I think it was during the Frankie fight that they said its a fight between a future 170'er and future 145'er.  Plus he's getting older so the weight cut is probably getting more difficult.

I wonder what's holding up Edgar/Cub already.

I get the feeling Dana is sitting on Featherweight until the McGregor/Poirier fight.
God I hope not SMH. Edgar and Cub should be ahead right now and a fight between them would spell out the true #1 contender emphatically

Conor will have his time, especially if he's half as good as he speaks

Bingo. His weight cuts seem pretty tough. At 170 though, don't see that going well for him tbh. At least when matched up against the current contenders..

Last night's first TUF fight was pretty entertaining. I like how everyone is already ranked, so they know who's fighting who. And it also gives the causal fans that don't follow WMMA a better idea of who everyone is.

notoriouslar notoriouslar , glad you had a great time at Foxwoods. Chiesa/J-Lau fight must have been unreal. Coworker wanted to play Rothwell as a 3-to-1 dog.

@ChampCruThik
I figured if anyone would know it would be you, but do athletic commissions have to approve fights in UFC, Bellator, etc? Just read that UFC announced Uncle Creepy vs Lineker for Nov 8. Just a little while ago UC had surgery on a broken hand and according to him, he got an infection just a few days ago. Now he's supposed to be fully healed, regain all strength, and have a training camp for a fight 2 months away. I thought the commissions prevented fighters from training with injuries unless they're cleared?

To my knowledge, state athletic commissions only intervene post-fight with medical suspensions. Such as "Immortal" Brown recently and Soto for 6 months. I believe pre-fight handling of injuries is at the discretion of the fighter's camp and medical team. Although I'm searching for more definitive literature to answer your question.

Khabib saying Pettis would be easy money and was irked that Pettis was mispronouncing his name. Said Pettis will know how to say his name in the next 12 months

******* lightweight division is backed all the way up. Can't wait to see the contenders start getting title shots

Not a Khabib fan btw, not my style

Edit:

*Ben Henderson considering 170... wow
*Frankie really wants Cub. Dana said he wants to make it happen
*Nate Diaz and Dana White had a convo, Dana said it was really positive. Just waiting now
I think Bendo has been considering 170 lbs for a while now. Before he lost to Pettis and GSP took his sabbatical, he wanted to move up to 170 lbs to have a super fight against him but UFC was never interested in it.

Jacare said that he's gonna train for a Dec fight against Weidman just in case Belfort doesn't make it. I actually think its smart. A lot of people aren't expecting Belfort to make the fight.

Regarding this new season of TUF; which I won't be watching; why didn't UFC do the same thing with the women's 135 lb division instead of just naming Rousey champion? It probably would've gotten good ratings or they could've at least had a mini tournament like they did with the 125 lb men's division.
Why would Bendo think he would fair better at 170??
Bendo's always wanted a future move to WW. Dana should have entertained a super-bout with GSP more diligently. 5 rounds of incredibly balanced MMA from both fighters. It's a shame we as fans will likely never get the pleasure of Bendo and Aldo at 155. Benson Henderson is far from done, he trains as hard as anyone in the game. Just unfortunate to get caught by RDA, and he seemingly can't beat Pettis. So why accumulate 3 to 4 wins at 155, if "Showtime" is still champ. The man has still won 9 of his last 11 fights. The two losses are however very untimely.

A lot of heavy-hitters at 170, and Bendo isn't KO'ing most of the top guys. Reports are he cuts from 180 as close as a week away from the actual fight. That's draining, grueling to shed 25 pounds regularly.

Picking Rockhold convincingly, he's hungry to redeem himself against Vitor potentially. Could be a decision victory for Luke, weary of Bisping dropping him but on the flip side, Rockhold's BJJ is nice and he could possibly give the "Count" his first submission loss.

Bendo is my dude but he would struggle at 170. He's got short arms and lacks K.O power. Plus most them guys are cutting from around 2 bills so he would be undersized. He's still top 5(ish) at LW so he should just keep working at it.

Bisping still managing to stay relevant  :pimp:

I'd imagine Bendo's thought process is another 3 to 4 grueling weight-cuts, not to mention impressive victories to regain momentum into the 155 title picture. 170 isn't shallow by any means, but less competitive than LW.

I can understand the thought process but the only ranked guy i can see him beating for sure at 170 is Pyle.

I don't even value Mike Pyle that highly. Debut WW fight, "Bendo" could neutralize Mein's KO power, same with Ellenberger. More experienced than Erick Silva. "Stun Gun" has seemingly abandoned his winning strategy for trading in the standup recklessly.

Then a jump up, Maia matchup may not be exciting but Henderson has far better standup and is difficult to tap sans Pettis armbar. Kampmann hasn't been the same since "Bigg Rigg" KO'ed him. Tarec doesn't scare me even though he's on a 5-fight win streak.

Next tier is "Immortal," Robbie, Woodley, Condit, and Rory Mac.

being a bendo fan, I don't think his grappling will be effective against the bigger fighters at 170.

Agreed. Bendo was a MASSIVE 155er, that allowed him to maintain that size/power advantage in his grappling game. I just don't see a move up to 170 being the best move for him, there are monsters up there.

There are some good fights up there for him and if the cut is too much for him now, I can't blame him.

We've all discussed how Aldo fades later in fights and some believe it's because of how much he cuts.

Barao just ******* fainted trying to make weight.

I'd say this is the smarter alternative. He's not exactly close to a title shot at 155 right now.

This guy

http://www.mmaweekly.com/nick-diaz-arrested-on-suspicion-of-dui-and-obstructing-a-police-officer

Nick Diaz is slated to throw down with former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the UFC 183 main event on Super Bowl Weekend in Las Vegas, but it looks like he’s got another fight on his hands first.

Diaz was arrested in Lodi, Calif., at 2:20 a.m. on Sept. 6 on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI), obstructing a police officer, destruction of evidence, and driving with a suspended license, according to Lodi Police Department Sgt. Steve Maynard, who confirmed an initial report by the Lodi News-Sentinel to MMAWeekly.com.

In clarifying the charges, Sgt. Maynard told MMAWeekly.com that Diaz was “actually cordial and polite” during the arrest, but that the obstructing a police officer charge stemmed from an incident during the arrest. Diaz requested to use the bathroom during the arrest process, and when an officer accompanied him, Diaz tried to induce his own vomiting, which would have altered the affects of ingesting alcohol or other influential substances.

Diaz’s arraignment should be 21 days after his arrest.

“We are aware of the (Nick Diaz arrest) situation and are in the process of gathering the facts,” read a UFC statement to MMAWeekly.com. “We understand that there is a legal process that will now take place and that Nick Diaz will have the opportunity to address the situation in the near future.”

On July 24, Diaz inked a new three-fight deal with the UFC ending his pseudo-retirement. Following his UFC 158 loss to then-champion Georges St-Pierre on March 16, 2013, Diaz announced that he was hanging up his gloves. A fight with Silva was enough to entice the Stockton native back to the cage.

A short time later, the UFC booked the fight between Diaz and Silva.

At the time of publication, there had been no response from UFC officials for a request for comment on Diaz’s DUI arrest.
