The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- O’Malley v Vera on NOW

Aldo like Cain is heads and shoulders above everyone else.

I don't know about all that.

Every time someone seems unbeatable in MMA, they end up getting beat.

Miguel Torres, Barao, BJ Penn @ 155, GSP, Anderson, etc..

I know GSP didn't technically lose but he still got his *** kicked,

Those 2 guys are definitely beasts, tho.

The way I see 145, if Aldo destroys Conor and handles Frankie in a rematch, I would consider that clearly cleaning out the division and I would then become "bored" with possible contenders. I would then like to see Aldo go up to 55.

Or possibly..

“I want to fight Aldo so bad,” Dillashaw recently said on Team Alpha Male Radio  . “I will beat Aldo. I want to fight him. … I respect him. He’s an awesome fighter.”

Frankie campaigning, perhaps an exercise in futility, I like how Frankie tryin to push a free card

cuz he knows a Conor/Aldo PPV would be historic. Dana and Lorenzo aint Tweet back I bet

I'm starting to worry that the 145 lb division is gonna have the same problem the 125 lb and hw division has. Aldo like Cain is heads and shoulders above everyone else. If Aldo beats Conor, then we're gonna be seeing rematches over and over again. Just like if Cain beats Werdum again we're probably gonna get another JDS, Werdum, and Big Foot rematches over and over again.

I've been saying this for a bit about 145.

As someone said, if Aldo takes Conor (and it's not close) and then Frankie again, he needs to go to 155.

Bring Barao up, or TJ if he continues to dominate at 135. Maybe before Aldo vacates. At least that breathes new life into the division.

I'm still hoping Travis Browne or Miocic work their way up to fights with Cain just for the sake of variety.

Though I think he would maul them.

Oh yea, I made that statement under the assumption that TJ/Cruz are already lined up for each other next year.

Plus if Aldo does 2-3 more fights at FW (Conor/Edgar etc.), we're stlll talking a year at least before he moves up.

Just a heads up for my MMA family. Dethrone Royalty is having a major sale this week.

Conor's UFC 178 walkout shirt for $8. "Bendo" and Khabib shirts for $8 and $6 respectively.

Thought I'd pass on. Happy Thanksgiving, folks.

“I thought [Gustfasson] won. Whenever they announced that Jones won, I was shocked,” Johnson said at a pre-fight press conference  in Stockholm. “I actually thought Alexander won. But you can’t win them all. When you’re fighting the champion, you definitely have to put him away. And it was a really close fight but I still think that he did enough.... but that’s just how the dice rolled.”

“That’s why you never get it in the judges’ hands because you just never know what’s going to happen,” he said. “Most judges aren’t fighters anyway. I think they’re just there to enjoy the fight; they don’t really pay attention to what’s really going on. The way these judges are making calls these days, it’s ridiculous. That’s my own two cents.”

I remember aldo winning the first three easily then fading away like he always does in the championship rounds

bro,

you win the first 3 tound in a 5 round fight.........you win the fight......................................................

never understood why poeple thought aldo "fades" hes intelligent, no need to take any more damage if you clearly have the fight won...cmon man chess not checkers

edgar has NOTHING for aldo.

hell, I dont even think PETTIS (Dana, superfight?) has anything for aldo in my opinion.

Aldo and Jones are clearly P4P best in the world

In an alternate reality far far away.....if aldo were 6'4 I think he would mash jonny jones

im not even a big aldo fan either

Seems like there's some legit animosity between Dillashaw and Barao. Throw in Cruz and you have a nice triangle going at 35.

"Fighting in Brazil for the first time is amazing," Barao said. "I’m well trained, doing an excellent camp. Every fight is important. Just to have the opportunity to go in there and show my work is amazing. I’m really happy with the opportunity to fight here."

Barao didn’t have the chance to compete in front of his countrymen as a UFC champion, and he would love the opportunity to rematch Dillashaw in Brazil one day.

"I think he would crap his pants," Barao said. "Fighting in the United States is easy. I want to see him fighting me in Brazil. It’s completely different.

"Dillashaw is talking too much crap. If we fight again, you can be sure it will be completely different," he continued. "When we fight again, he will see the real champion. I don’t like to make jokes, talk trash. I like to show my work inside the cage, show the best Renan Barao possible. (Dillashaw) can enjoy that belt for now, because it’s coming back to Brazil soon."

Stockholm card shaping up

via Sherdog

A key light heavyweight bout has been added to UFC on Fox 14, as Phil Davis  will take on Ryan Bader  in Stockholm on Jan. 24.

Promotion officials announced the contest on Friday. UFC on Fox 14 takes place at the Tele2Arena in Sweden and is headlined by a No. 1 contender bout at 205 pounds between Alexander Gustafsson  and Anthony Johnson. The evening’s main card airs on Fox and will also include a middleweight matchup between Dan Henderson  and Gegard Mousasi.

Definitely has star power but not looking forward to either of those fights. Bader/Davis will be slow, GnP. And Mousasi will probably pick apart Hendo.

You can have her bro. That girl's jacked. Did she lose to Miesha?

Edit: Yes she did, all show and no go. Didn't know Miesha was on a two-fight win streak. Sara McMahon (sp) should be a good test for Miesha. Probably four in a row and they'll probably be talking title fights again.

Definitely think Zingano, Correia should be Rhonda's next challengers. 125 males, 135 males, 135 females and heavy weight are definitely the most shallow divisions right now.

barao shouldn't be talking since it's his own fault for missing his rematch for the belt.

For real. It serves no purpose ATM. The UFC isn't going to give him a title shot now that Cruz is back.

The first Dillashaw/Barao match was lop sided...kind of like the Edgar/Swanson. Barao had absolutely nothing for Dillashaw. It could've been because of the weight cut or getting rocked earlier on.

I'm so pumped for next weekend. UFC Countdown is on tomorrow btw at 6 PM Pacific time on FS1.

Looks like Erick Silva will start training at Jackson's in 2015, I'm happy because he's one of my favorite fighters. Until he learns how to defend takedowns he'll continue to struggle to breakthrough to the next level. He was so close to KO'ing Matt Brown though, damn.

Via MMAFighting

Scheduled to meet former RFA welterweight champion Mike Rhodes  at UFC Fight Night 58 on Dec. 20 in Barueri, Brazil, Silva was forced to change his plans of training at Jackson’s MMA. A training partner of the likes of Anderson Silva  and Ronaldo Souza  at X-Gym, the welterweight was hoping to train at Greg Jackson’s team this year, but since the UFC offered him a fight in December, he won’t be able to train in Albuquerque until early 2015.

"I was hoping that my next fight would be next year, but since it’s already close, I plan on going there after my fight, with no training camp, to evaluate my performance," Silva told MMAFighting.com. "I plan on spending some time there, but I’ll continue training at X-Gym."

Following his loss to Brown in May, Silva underwent surgery in Brazil, and expects to perform better after going under the knife.

"I had surgery for deviated septum," he said. "Recovery was great, I think it helped me breathe. I feel I trained better now, but we have such a great team, that works so hard, that it will also make the difference in my next fight."

Didn't see your post until now Champ, but props for the heads up. I saw a post on on Twitter and jumped on that Dethrone sale. Snagged the grey 178 walkout and a green Conor shirt for St. Paddy's Day this year. $21 shipped.

Watching Countdown now, getting AMPED up for this weekend. High hopes for both fights.

UFC and Reebok announced their uniform deal. Not sure how this benefits the smaller/unknown fighters and why would a company sponsor any fighter now if they can't wear their logo leading up to and during promotion of fights.

But can't wait to see every fighter covered in Reebok gear
The UFC announced on Tuesday the finalization of a landmark six-year partnership with Reebok, a deal which could dramatically shift the role of sponsorships in mixed martial arts. Beginning the week of July 6, 2015, the UFC will institute a sweeping new uniform program which will effectively replace all in-cage fighter sponsorships with kits produced exclusively by Reebok.
"We look at this as Reebok and the UFC are essentially changing the sports landscape once again," said UFC CEO and co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta. "This clearly has never been done in combat sports. Reebok will be the exclusive worldwide outfitter of the UFC, and as part of this deal and this partnership, this will be the biggest non-broadcast partnership that our company has ever signed, so it is significant.

"We're continuing to do things and implement things to elevate the level of the sport, and really take it in a place where other major sports leagues are. So the way that this outfitting policy will work is that it will allow for each of the fighters' individuality, but also will provide a unique, iconic and consistent look for all the athletes, obviously very different from where the sport has been in the past, where it is essentially, for lack of a better word, a bit of a mish-mash with various different sponsors, different looks, brands, and styles."

Fertitta elected not to disclose the value of the deal, repeating only that it was the "largest deal we've ever signed" outside of broadcast deals.

Participation in the new uniform policy will be mandatory for every fighter under UFC contract.

In calling the partnership a "seminal moment" for the UFC and the sport of mixed martial arts, Fertitta explained that "the vast majority, if not all, of the revenues" from the deal will be redistributed to the UFC's roster. Fighters will earn a tiered sponsorship income dependent on their ranking the day of weigh-ins prior to their fight, regardless of card placement. Champions will bank the most money, followed by (in descending order): fighters ranked No. 1 to No. 5 in their division, fighters ranked No. 6 to No. 10, fighters ranked No. 11 to No. 15, and unranked fighters.

While not delving deep into detail, Fertitta explained that each fighter will be distinguished by their own personalized kit, and that in addition to a flat sponsorship income, athletes are also expected to receive 20-percent royalty payments dependent on sales for their individualized kits into perpetuity, meaning retired fighters will also draw from the program.

"Imagine Cain Velasquez," explained Fertitta. "He obviously will have a certain look, feel, and appeal to his merchandise and what he wears into the Octagon. He will be compensated based upon how much of that actually sells, over and above what he will be paid as defending champion for a fight.

"At the end of the day, the more successful you are and the more demand there is for you, as an individual brand, [the more] you're going to sell. That's the way the system works, it's a capitalistic system here at the UFC."

Though he didn't offer a timetable, Fertitta indicated that plans are also in the works to create kits for retired "legends" of the sport. Cornermen on fight night will also be beholden to the uniform policy.

Fighters will still be allowed to carry additional non-UFC sponsors under the program, however those sponsors may not be on display for any UFC-designated fight week events, which includes open workouts, media days, press conferences, weigh-ins, and fight nights -- a wrinkle that effectively brings an end to the tradition of fight night banners.

"You guys have seen it when we've had press conferences before and fighters are upset about sponsors, guys are walking in wearing UFC clothes because they don't want to haggle with the sponsors anymore," said UFC President Dana White. "Whether you're at the top of the heap, or you're at the bottom, (now) you know every time you step in there, you're getting paid. You have a sponsorship, you're getting paid every time you get in. And it's more incentive to get bigger and get better."

"Ultimately the consumers and the fans are going to decide," Fertitta added. "They're going to be voting with their wallets, so they're the ones who are going to be deciding essentially who makes sense to be in the retail space."

Fertitta indicated that several uniform colors and styles will be available to both fighters and consumers, including board shorts, vale tudo shorts, and "skorts."

The UFC rankings, other than a few potential and minor exclusivity tweaks, are expected to remain the same media-generated entity under the new program, obviously with increased importance due to the tiered sponsorship payout structure.

"[This announcement] is going to help the fighters because it's going to allow them to focus more on their training, and not have to run around and try to get some of these sponsors that you guys are all familiar with, that aren't blue-chip Fortune 500 companies, I might add," Fertitta said. "If there is a sponsor on our uniform or on our kit, it's going to be a major global brand like you see in some of these other sports, like the European soccer leagues. So just that alone is going to completely change the perception of the sport, the perception of the athlete, the level that we're at.

"This is a true game changer. We've had a lot of game changers as we've built this company, starting from ‘The Ultimate Fighter,' which was a game-changer when we did our deal with Spike, to when we got Budweiser -- the leading sport's sponsor -- onboard with out brand, to landing our FOX deal and partnering up with Electronic Arts. Reebok is right there at the highest level in that group of some of the seminal moments, and I think we'll look back in 10 years, like we look back at when ‘The Ultimate Fighter' launched, we'll look back at this announcement as being that important."
