The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

Watched the card at a local brewery with some friends. They were all rooting for Rumble but I thought Gus was gonna work him. Man was I wrong, those punches were vicious :x Rumble put the lumber to Gus in front of his entire country man :smh: still shocked a the result.

I also hope we see DC vs Gus soon. I think Gus can beat DC purely off the reach advantage, but as we saw against JJ Cormier can hold his own.

I don't know if Rumble can beat Jones, but I would love to see him make Jones nose swell for nonrecreatioal reasons.

Jones should beat Rumble, expect him to slowly pick Rumble apart over 5 rounds en route to the decision victory (or maybe via a rear naked choke in hmmm round 4).

Gonna expect a lot of oblique kicks from Jones to slow down Rumble coming forward early

All that said, Rumble has some ungodly power and even though Jones has proven that he possesses a great chin I really don't think it would matter because if Rumble connects flush early in their fight it's likely over.

Some guys connect and it's like Jones thinks to himself "okay that hurt, that hurt a lot but **** that" and he fires back with a nice combo of his own. Jones seems to get angry when he gets hurt, but Rumble is so powerful and relentless in his attack that he really leaves his opponents no time to think/will their way through the pain. IDK if Jones can fight fire with fire in this one because that would play directly into Rumbles hand.

He's going to have to be methodical and smothering. Keep the fight against the cage and even take it to the ground.

I tried going onto UFC to see if they listed reaches but they don't. It doesn't seem like Jones would have a huge reach advantage on Johnson.

But if I were Johnson I'd watch the Texeria and Cormier fights. Jon can go five rounds easy. He's also the type of fighter who will try to pick apart opponents weaknesses while beating them in their strong suit.

I don't think Johnson has that cardio for a five round war. He did impress me with his wrestling defense against Davis. Hopefully, it'll be better for Jones. He obviously has granite hands.

LHW just got shook up. I hope they don't pit Gustafson vs Cormier just yet.

Jon Bones Jones        [emoji]10004[/emoji] @JonnyBones

Wonderful? I think it's time for a new nickname
6:27 PM - 24 Jan 2015

I'm a Rumble fan. So I'd like to see him win. Obviously Jones is a phenomenal fighter.

But I can't help but think of Silva/Weidman. Both fights.

But moreso the 2nd where Weidman dropped Silva from the clinch in the 1st round.

Obviously not the same. Jones is much younger and truly in his prime. But if Rumble catches Jones with some of those interior punches that Cormier did.....

We all believed Anderson was indestructable once.

You just never know until dudes actually fight.

I certainly give Rumble much more a chance than I originally did, you can't deny him

With Spider, I can't remember if it was this thread or the old one but I definitely gave Weidman a more than solid chance in that first fight. A lot of other folks were deadset on not giving Weidman any chance. Once TRTChael dominated Spider I knew it was only a matter of time. Weidman's wrestling and striking were a recipe to compete

With Jones, I have yet to see him get dominated for a majority of a fight, granted Gus pushed him to the brink. I still think Gus was all out gassed and Jones finished stronger. So in my mind I still sort of have that invincibility aura for Jones and I don't give Rumble as big of a chance as I did Weidman. I feel the same way about Aldo in terms of being unbeatable. These are the two guys where I just can't bet against until I see them truly get bullied or dominated, but I do think both of their opponents are worthy challenges

If others gave Rumble a bigger chance than I do I wouldn't argue it. Rumble possesses a solid wrestling base, he's strong as a herd of bulls, precise kickboxer, experience.. The only questions I really have on him are enduring a 5 round fight

Did Weidman's wrestling ever really come into play in the Silva fights? I can't recall.

That's why I use that parallel. Silva had a ridiculous chin. Used to let himself get punched by dudes.

Apparently Weidman has some dynamite in his hands that Silva's previous opponents didn't.

Hoping Rumble can do something similar to Jones.

Before the Weidman/Silva fight I think a lot of fighters were giving the fight to Weidman. I don't think anyone thought he was gonna knock him out, but most thought that he would take him down and maybe submit him.

Yea, I remember thinking "all the wrestlers are picking Weidman" going into that fight.

But I can't remember if he actually used any real wrestling in either fight really.

I don't know if Silva ever had a great chin and was truly ever tested. Everyone said Sonnen's punches were like pillows but he even dropped Silva. Don't remember which fight. I think most of Silva's durability came from him turning away from punches, therefore lessening the damage. I think Rogan explained it during one of his fights, probably the Bonnar one.

Yup, Weidman had Anderson down for a long stretch during the first round

Weidman just has precise punches more so than power IMO, his boxing was coming along leading up to the Anderson fight

If I remember correctly spider was taken down once In 1st but got real confident because he started landing shots and getting off first. Then He did his hands down "catch and shoot" and got caught.

Lol vid posted before I could press reply button

And I remembered pretty much correctly too *adjusts tie*

After Spider got taken down with ease and was getting hit with stiff ground and pound, I feel like he didn't want a repeat of the Chael fight. That's why Anderson started doing that taunting, trying to throw Weidman way off his gameplan away from the wrestling and turn it into a kickboxing match

The thing that sort of surprised me was how many significant strikes Anderson actually landed in the first fight. The statistics are very close

Spider was really effective when he was intent on getting hands & kicks off first

It's why I don't see Nick Diaz standing a chance vs Silva. And I RIDE with Nick mannn

Anderson was effective but I also feel like Weidman must be pretty durable, he was eating some decent strikes to the head and body

I give Nick almost no chance of winning, assuming Anderson isn't completely washed due to that leg injury

I love Nick but does anyone really see a way for him to win? I also wonder what the actual difference in size will be on fight night, anyone know?

I know guys' chins degenerate pretty quickly after getting knocked out so maybe Nick's volume eventually catches Anderson on the chin but other than that Anderson should be the bigger man, the more complete and heavier striker and is just as if not more competent on the mat

Pretty much. The antics were a way to get into Weidman's head. He obviously didn't respect Weidman's hands or clearly heard when Longo said to deflate the air from his chest.

Most people in the know we're giving Weidman the advantage in the fight. Like JBJ, Weidman is the prototypical wrestler with good striking (Weidman has more power in his hands than Jones though). Chael, despite choking in the fifth, exposed Anderson.

And I looked up Johnson and Jones reaches. Jones has a 6" reach advantage. My gut says to go with Rumble but my head says Jones. JBJ is the safe bet.

Around NT, I don't believe Weidman was getting any love at all

Also, UFC Countdown will be on FS1 tonight at 7 PM PST I'll be watching

Only chances I give Nick would be for Silva to not be mentally ready to fight and throw kicks or for him to gas in the later rounds.

I really wish Nick didn't punk out after the GSP loss

WW has gotten so crazy since he left.. Brown, Hendricks Woodley, Rory and Lawler
