The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- O’Malley v Vera on NOW

The show in Dublin was one of the top 3 crowds I've ever seen in MMA history. Too bad it was on Fight Pass so who knows how many people even got to experience it. The electricity was legendary

Earlier this week, the UFC announced that it would return to Dublin for an event at the 3Arena, formerly known as the O2, on Oct. 24. While the idea of taking center stage at a massive venue in Dublin remains the dream, McGregor still has plenty of interest in competing on the Fight Night card.

“[UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta] was trying to say, ‘Well, we want bigger stadiums’ because this is in the O2, which is like a 9,500-seat stadium in Dublin,” McGregor said during a recent conference call. “He wants me on a bigger one. You don’t have a show in my hometown and not have me on it. I want to be on that card. We will see what way it plays out. Any time the UFC rolls into my town, I most certainly want to be on that card.”

The SBG Ireland representative headlined the Las Vegas-based promotion’s last trip to Dublin in July 2014, a card that was lauded for its electricity and overall atmosphere. Much to the delight of a partisan crowd, McGregor put away Diego Brandao in the opening stanza.

“We make ourselves heard; 9,500 Irish fans screaming sound like 19,500. Lorenzo said it was too small for me and wanted to do a stadium show. Yes, I want to do a stadium show, but if you come back to my home city I want to be on that card,” McGregor reiterated. “I built this here. I’m the one that put the UFC on the map here. If you’re coming into my hometown, you best believe I want on the show.”

Anybody think they gave this to mendes solely cuz they believe McGregor has the better shot of beating him in a 5 rd fight than Frankie

They probably gave Conor the choice of opponent.

Best believe he saw what happened to Swanson.....

But if it was just between Chad and Frankie they have done him no favours.

Probably. That's what some of us was saying when the news first dropped. Because it makes no sense for Mendes to be getting the shot

If Mendes wins, do we really want to see Mendes v Aldo III?

Either way we all wanted to see Conor take on Mendes, Aldo, Frankie and Lamas. The order just got mucked up

Before they chose Mendes, Helwani said UFC's top 3 options were Mendes, Frankie, and Nate Diaz. And McGregor and his camp were supposedly in favor of Diaz because he was closer in style to Aldo than the other two.

I hope Robbie can pull it off but Rory is a monster and is probably gonna control the fight. Conor will be on his back most of the fight with Mendes but I want him to win just to see the Aldo fight happen eventually.

this dude conor mcgregor is hilarious. talking about the athletic state commission agent is lucky he didn't catch an uppercut for touching the "tri color" flag.

I could see ufc booking Frankie vs mendes if he wins and have aldo just fight connor

Just watched the Notorious. Can't believe the UFC gave this dude that kind of vehicle. He definitely has the charisma, Irish heritage and trash talking factor. But I didn't see anything besides his flexibility and movement in the 6-part series. Like I was hard pressed to say what his specialty/bread and butter is. He's got a good jab. But the clips they had from the Siver showed a mediocre (not a great word for a UFC fighter) grappler able to take Connor down. Chad is a really good wrestler.

Obviously we don't know what we don't know in this scenario (how Connor can compete against a good wrestler with solid striking).

As far as the WW fight, UFC has done such a crap job promoting it.

They're stupid for putting almost all of their promotion for one title fight that isn't even happening anymore. Them making it an interim belt fight is an even bigger joke.

I called it from the get go, when they were putting all of their eggs into one basket-- that someone would get injured

Still though, excited to see a wrestler go against Conor. We will see if he can quiet some of his detractors

Lawler macdonald 1 on fs1 right now for those that need to refresh their memory on how the fight actually went down...

I guess we got a 1/2 hour Countdown because they had to scrap the Aldo footage?

Weird because normally the Robbie/Rory section would be 1/2 hour or so on it's own.

Don't know why that fight hasn't gotten more publicity. It's a rematch, two of the 3 best welterweight in the world, and still flying under the radar. Should been promoted to main event after aldos withdrawal imo

GSP looking like he's been active and training
GSP seems like the kind of guy that is always gonna be training regardless of if he's fighting. But maybe he's been training for the Kickboxer remake/sequel with JCVD. Sometime last week there was a pic floating around on Twitter of the two of them hanging out in Bangkok.

Those guys training during the day and then having epic dance battles in clubs at night.

Well they caught another one... Gilbert Melendez suspended after failing 188 post-fight drug test.

Wonder who they replace him with to fight Iaquinta.

Gilbert suspended for 1 year b/c of that. i wonder how much worse he would have performed in Mexico if he didn't have PEDs.
