The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

And Mayweather is making $100 million a fight
laugh.gif
u know how much his opponents make? not even a tenth of what he's making. and he fights twice a year, while ufc is putting on 3-4 events a month with 10-15 fights each so paying 20-30 fighters every week or other week

not to mention its his company that has to sink the millions and millions into promoting, not like he gets paid by another company. Mayweather is an anomaly, not fair to compare him to any fighter or athlete in any sport

Sincerity is not Jones' strong suit
laugh.gif

Good win though. I enjoyed the fight. DC did some good things. No gas after a while though.

Cerrone picking them off one by one.

RDA gets his shot at Pettis in March.

Is Khabib cleared? What's his timeline?
Khabib wants a fight in May or June

Cowboy wants to fight in Denver in FEB

Cowboy will get destroyed again by Pettis (again) or RDA (again) and Bendo (again) if they ever fought and Khabib will take his lunch

It'll be tough finding anyone to match up with Cowboy outside of Khabib. Unless they want to pick a guy coming off a loss (Bobby Green or Nate Diaz would be NICE matchups). Maybe Cowboy could get revenge on Diaz for the *** whooping he got

Even with Cowboy getting destroyed a bunch of times, still, Cowboy

love how he's always down to fight

Cain would eat his lunch, so would Does Santos and Werdum
but this is basically what everyone says every time someone is talking about the next guy Jones is going to fight...........

Anyway. Decently entertaining fight tonight. Jones always beating people at their own games. more takedowns than DC tonight. That's gotta hurt DC's heart

Mayweather is an anomaly, but for a top guy in the UFC like jones is, he's getting peanuts.
Dana said they expected 750k ppv buys. Imagine all the money UFC is taking home
Why don't people get so bent out of shape over that? But when the nfl or nba make money, the players feel entitled to getting paid more and fans argue that they should

Which is true, but those heavyweights are a whole different animal compared to what JJ is used to. Its all hypothetical right now but I think those guys like JDS and especially Cain would take him out

I think the difference is:

MMA as a sport. It's violent so it's not like they're going to have the same exposure as a MLB, NBA and lesser extent NFL/NHL. Like I posted before, MMA isn't completely widely accepted. It's not like kids are going to do it in high school, etc.

The UFC doesn't have a Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Lebron James, Derek Jeter, etc. Like I posted before, besides being a d bag, there's no reason why Jones isn't a superstar. A lot of these guys should be marketed better. Also, UFC advertises UFC as an organization more than the fighters. Mayweather, Paqiou, Tyson, Klitchko, etc are marketed as the draws not what ever belt they're fighting for. They are the draw not WBA # 2,567.

Cowboy doesnt want to get worked by Pettis again. I like to see him vs Gil, fresh match up.

"Cigano" is my favorite heavyweight, but the version of JDS I saw against Struve has me worried. Against Cain in a fourth fight, or even a "Bones" matchup. Getting hit clean off the break, dropping his hands and turning away from his opponent. Instead of crisp boxing and combinations, looking for a single hay-maker. Plus, if JBJ was able to take down arguably the best wrestler in MMA (DC). There's no telling what Jones would do to Junior, following the Cain ground and pound strategy.

I hate Greg Jackson...dude is such a smug douche
Not to mention his reputation for making his fighters inherit a safer, decision-based approach. In many cases.

I'll never forget Dana telling the media "Cowboy" wanted to fight after like a 6-day layoff in Baltimore for 172. As a late replacement for Joe Ellenberger. What he did to Jury was appreciated, on behalf of Diego. Humbled the young "prodigy" real quick. Although Jury did well to fend off the armbar against the clock, as well as the moderately deep RNC attempt.

You know Cerrone has no gripes fighting Khabib, unlike many. Coming off injury could bode well for "Cowboy's" chances, although I'd still pick Nurmagomedov in a decision. Despite Cerrone's top-notch kickboxing.

Gil is a possibility. Coming off a loss in a title fight, and a razor-thin decision loss to "Bendo" in two of his last 3 fights. Although I'd really like to see Gil and Eddie go at it, depending how the Boston card goes. Epic 3-round war, potentially. Both willing to mix it up, and former 155 champions under different banners.

RDA is next in line for "Showtime," and we're hard-pressed to believe Cerrone would jump Khabib even after that. Why? Pettis crushed "Cowboy" with a vicious body kick and dispatched of him quite easily. Of course things are different now with Cerrone riding a 6-fight win streak against top-tier competition.

Even if McGregor KO's Siver within 2 minutes like he says, he should not jump Frankie for a title shot. Although Conor's theatrics, bravado, and home support in Ireland are an alluring proposition for the UFC to strike while the iron's hot. Even in Dublin, I'd be surprised if Aldo didn't put McGregor on his back for the majority of 5 rounds. I would love to see Edgar get his 145 rematch because the first bout was relatively close in Vegas, whether you gave Frankie one round or two. Conor gets Mendes with a true wrestling test in 2015, plus tenacity and elite cardio from the TAM camp.

I wouldn't even favor Cain over Bones if they fought.

bones skill set is unmatched and his chin is phenomenal.

If he moved up an had a tune up fight I think he could withstand cain's power.

UFC 182 Thoughts

Preface:
I decided to bite the bullet and order for $65 at home with my brother, who trains jiu-jitsu at school. Why? Avoid crowds, ignorant casual fight fans, marked up food, and I didn't want to drink after NYE. I find it easier and more productive to score rounds in the comfort and quiet of my home with a small group of family and friends who train.

Akhmedov:
Was shocked in his welterweight debut, when "Gunni" tapped him with a guillotine. Second submission loss of his career, to the same choke. The Russian is another high-caliber fighter on the rise from Dagestan. Elite Sambo, the biggest strength in his toolbox by far.

Knew Omari likely would not submit Nilsson, a strong grappler and black belt in both judo and BJJ. Nilsson had never be finished prior to the Gustafsson/Manuwa card. Got caught with a Barnatt head kick. Thought Akhmedov had a chance to knockout Nilsson at some point in R2.

I'd like to see Akhmedov fight someone like Erick Silva next. Silva is exciting and willing to mix things up, both in the standup and on the ground. Would test all facets of Omari's game against a top-20 opponent.

Dunham:
I'm disappointed Damm didn't even attempt to utilize his high-level of jiu-jitsu. Made no effort to take the fight to the ground, despite getting picked apart in the standup. Dunham showed crisp, accurate boxing. Got baited a bit in R3 to trade and stand in the pocket, but otherwise a strong performance (sweep on the cards) that Dunham needed.

Cannonier:
UFC debut. Was finishing previous opponents with relative ease. Could tell he was warming up and getting more comfortable just as Jordan caught him on the top/back of the head. Liked his movement leading up to the KO. Also a noticeable size disadvantage from the jump for Cannonier.

Garbrandt:
This kid is a future champ. I've been telling the homies @DeadsetAce and Vincent Van Goat Vincent Van Goat . Dude has no chill button whatsoever. Always fights at 100, sometimes to his detriment. Wrestling background much like the entire TAM camp, but his boxing is tight and has pop rare for 135. Light on his feet, moves well when he wants to.

Things I did not like were dropping his hands, overconfidence, and staying in the pocket too long after landing. Justin will tighten that up moving forward if Garbrandt wants to be a serious bantamweight contender.

Props to Brimage's chin, who absorbed a plethora of shots before being saved by the ref. Good stoppage, nice fight for Cody to debut in the UFC.

Felder:
Won the first round convincingly despite significantly less experience compared to Castillo. Mixed up his standup very well. Had Castillo confused and frustrated.

Burkman:
Won the first round. Perplexed me in R2. Stood and baited Lombard with his hands down, threw less in the counter, and moved less fluidly perhaps from all those punishing leg kicks. For someone that trains at high altitude, his cardio left more to be desired in R3 knowing he needed the round to even possibly steal a decision.

Chin on this boy though. Did not fear Lombard's hands one bit.

Horiguchi:
Slow start, Gaudinot stole R1. Opened up in R2 with the right head kick and moving forward with speedy blitzes. Ineffective when Gaudinot backed him up. Great movement and cardio. Seemed the guy could fight another 3 rounds if he had to.

Tavares:
Coaching benefiting him tremendously. Stiff jab. Worked in leg kicks well to batter Nate's lead leg. Sweep on the cards for me. Focused fight from the Hawaiian. Disliked the fans booing. Marquardt is a dangerous opponent. Tavares fought smart and technically sound. Picked his spots.

Cerrone:
I doubted him, in the past he's disappeared in the limelight. Against "Bendo," Pettis, and RDA. Jury is talented and on the rise. Well-rounded game from the Alliance camp. Brash, confident. R1 put Jury in a bad place with the RNC attempt and late armbar against the clock.

"Cowboy" exhibited solid takedown defense and threw less kicks in the first two rounds to avoid Jury's takedowns.

The last 10 seconds were for Diego. Bite of humility for Myles moving forward. Back in the gym to retool, kid.

Gil or Khabib next would be ideal opponents. Although Cerrone's a live underdog in either matchup.

JBJ:
I get the hate. He's brash, loud, overconfident. Unapologetic for his skills and mouth. Makes it look easy. Plethora of weapons. Attacks from all angles utilizing the 8 facets of Muay Thai. Lethal in the clinch with knees and elbows.

Borderline gray area with the eye pokes, shoulder wrench (used on Glover), digging his fingers into the opponent to hold and control. Smart fighter, Jones knows exactly what he's doing and what he can get away with in the cage.

Push kick to measure distance. Allowed DC to come inside too easily in R2, right uppercut was open and Cormier was landing some high kicks as well.

Had it 19-19 after two rounds. First for "Bones." Left to the body deterred Cormier. R3 was close, DC was winning the round for 90 seconds up to the "accidental" eye poke. Jones turned the tide and his fortunes until the last 30 to 45 seconds, which we saw a late rush from Cormier.

R4 was all about clinch work. Grueling and under-appreciated. DC's cardio failed him in this round. Got taken down twice, from exhaustion and credit to JBJ. Showed no dirty boxing (Cormier). Jones' best round by far, similar to R2 being Cormier's best of the fight.

R5 seemed Cormier's pride got the best of him. The takedown (slam), which I believe Jones grabbed the top of the cage on the way down, was a moral victory but likely did not win him the championship round. His corner told him the truth, DC needed a finish most likely down 3-1 on the cards.

The legacy is complete and JBJ is the best ever if he defeats "Gus" convincingly in a rematch. Then moves to heavyweight for a debut fight and takes on Cain in a super-fight of epic proportions.

I wouldn't even favor Cain over Bones if they fought.

bones skill set is unmatched and his chin is phenomenal.

I worry less about Cain's power, and more about his work-rate. Accumulation of ground and pound, if he does indeed put JBJ on his back. Velasquez beat up "Cigano" twice, not from one punch power but from constantly grinding.

You don't have to worry about Cain's cardio like we did last night with Cormier in R4 and R5. He's the Edgar of the heavyweight division. Gets stronger and better as his opponent fades and dwindles.

The interesting aspect is wrestling. People constantly doubt JBJ's takedown defense, despite his body of work against the likes of Bader, Rashad, and now DC. Before last night, Cormier was the consensus best MMA wrestler. Fighters like Hendricks, Weidman, Askren, etc. behind DC. Cain is a great Division 1 wrestler in his own right, with the benefit of training with Cormier and other seasoned wrestlers at Alliance. But if Cormier virtually could not put Jones on his back, and even was taken down 3 times or more, can Cain really land the takedown and utilize his G&P?

"Bones" would have less of a reach advantage against Cain, but still a sizable one. Things I saw open from the Cormier fight for Velasquez to exploit. Dirty boxing in the pocket with right uppercuts. Working the high kick to change angles. JBJ turns up in the championship rounds. You'd have to believe any next opponent would have to "steal" and convincingly take the first two of 3 rounds to have a legitimate chance entering R5. Which DC conceivably could have done, if you feel he won the third, and showed more in the fifth besides landing a moral takedown.

I actually thought Jury had Cowboy a little off his standup game. Outside of that head kick in the third round, for me I had it 1-1. It was anyone's fight IMO with 3 minutes left in the third round

Cowboy was disgusted with his performance

Cowboy has trouble with guys who he doesn't have a reach advantage over. Diaz, Pettis, RDA, Benson.. He gets his lunch taken

Jury has the same reach as Cowboy and his movement (probably heavily influenced by Alliance camp-- Dom Cruz) seemed to frustrate Cowboy

Barboza was dominating Cowboy IMO before Cowboy snuck in that jab that changed everything. Barboza has a reach advantage over Cowboy

Proof is in the pudding

I dont think a main event moment can surpass "the front kick" and rogan losing his mind. Idc what happened to him when he was old fat n slow

I scored R2 for Cerrone. I appreciate Jury's footwork and unconventional movement, and "Cowboy" wasn't throwing as many kicks in fear of a takedown per Greg Jackson.

I'm not disgusted with Cerrone's performance at all. Two respectable submission attempts in R1 with significant back control. Had Jury in dangerous waters, a good Alliance grappler in his own right. Turning and rolling to the right side with his back taken (to his left first, then right when "Cowboy" switched position).

R3 was up for grabs and Jury did not do enough or show enough to win. Kind of felt defeated, like a loss was imminent. Especially when his corner said Cerrone likely won R2, a closer round, for being the more "popular guy."

However, I will remain realistic. As entertaining as Cerrone is with his kickboxing, he is not the favorite against Khabib or Gil.

I like that

Melendez vs Alvarez

Strikeforce vs Bellator
Depending on Eddie's result against "Bendo" in Boston, Alvarez could realistically fight Gil by May approximately. Considering Melendez only fought a month ago, and doesn't have a concrete opponent as far as I know. May 23rd perhaps, depending on the location of UFC 187. Ideally California, geographically for Gil and his fan base.

Definitely a fair viewpoint. When discussing the GOAT I mean you can't really go wrong IMO

The way I see it, Jones' resume may get the edge over Spider's. Jones isn't a knockout artist by any means though. His skill set is beautiful second to only Spider for me

Again, if JBJ beats Gustafsson convincingly in a rematch. I'm talking 4 rounds to one, with his patented spinning back kicks, elbows and knees in the clinch, side kicks, etc. Then moves up to heavyweight for a debut fight, and beats Cain next. Jones would cement himself as the UFC/MMA G.O.A.T. with "Spider," and GSP further down taking a backseat.

That first Cowboy/Showtime fight was rough. The way Cowboy buckled from that kick.

I don't see the point of JBJ moving to heavy weight except for more props. Besides the Velazquez fight, there isn't really any compelling matchups. LHW just seems more competitive. Sad to hear DC lost. I wanted him to win. Going into the fight, I had JBJ. At the moment, I'd say he's the greatest champion in UFC history based on the quality of opponents he's beaten (D.C., Texeira, Gustafson, Belfort, Sonnen, Evans, Rampage and Machida).

I can't remember but Jones passed Ortiz for most title defenses at LHW?

Can't wait to see who his next opponent will be. He's supposed to be moving to New Mexico where he'll be more dedicated to his craft.

Yeah, Jones isn't going to take a vacation like he usually does. He's going straight into training again to keep his weight down and also said he wants to work his way to earning a black belt. Ruh roh

I always feel GSP is unappreciated in the G.O.A.T. discussion. Completely get his style is often deemed boring, overly safe. Product of the Serra TKO. But from a technical standpoint, love his jab and MMA wrestling. You can see a lot of the Tristar influence in Rory's jab and fighting style. Hindsight is 20/20, but MacDonald may have not taken that first loss to Condit had he fought more defensively to close the third round. "Rory Mac" had "NBK" dead to rights for the majority of two and a half rounds.

JBJ passed Tito after the controversial "Gus" fight in Toronto. I believe he's now at 8 consecutive LHW title defenses.

"Bones" will eventually move to HW because he's chasing history and cementing his own legacy. There's little to nothing left at 205 after a Gustafsson rematch. I firmly believe "Rumble" would offer Jones little trouble, Manuwa is far from ready, and JBJ has beaten everybody else at 205.

His career path could honestly go Gustafsson rematch, HW debut, Cain super-fight. Retire before 30 near the end of 2016. If he so chooses.
