The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- O’Malley v Vera on NOW

Cyborg saying that her days of being able to cut to 140 are nearly finished. Meathead broad needs to lay off the PEDs and she won't have any issues. Unless her extensive PED abuse has permanently changed her body and hormones thee is no reason she can't lose a bit of muscle and compete at a lighter weight.
really though, just don't lift for a year and do more cardio

waiting for the day that these guys have "managers" that will speak for them. wonderboy is just too nice and will never say a bad thing about his opponents. khabib should just do the whole anti-american/pro russia shtick. i think cody has been trying his hardest to play that cool/tough guy but he's like 120lbs, aint nobody taking these little guys seriously.
It's called variety. Not everyone can be Conor or Nate

Having a goodie good like Wonderboy is an angle they can easily build up. Just like Holly

Cody is 120 lbs? What are you saying G   people can easily care. Dude has that "look" with the tatts and his power is stupid. They can make little boxers draws, the same can be for MMA fighters. Especially entertaining ones like Cody. Not sure what you're talking about like Cody is a ****** or something. He's no DJ

aint nobody paying to see this little dudes fight. you can only do so much. even if dom/dj were to have a mini-superfight, that wouldn't even headline a ppv. are they talented? of course, but those divisions just don't sell. the die-hards will care, but that's just not enough for the ufc

anyone else think cain was on the track to be the face of the company until his injuries/setback? think if he can get that belt back ufc could still have him be a major draw

Of course Dom and dj wouldn't headline a ppv because the ufc never pushed either of them

Sage wasn't doing a damn thing either and they pushed him down our throats

All I'm asking for is an honest attempt. Divisions as a whole the lighter ones don't sell but who would have thought women's Mma would be where it's at now

they did try to push DJ. they gave him his own ufc on fox main events where ppl could watch for free and he's fought on a lot of big cards. the man is considered one the pound-for-pound best fighter. he's cleaned out his division, yet, fans still don't care. there's no star power with these guys. it's just the stigma that surrounds the smaller guys

They never built up DJ. They never gave him tv specials like they have with the guys/gals I listed or gave a fan a reason to tune in

We're getting off the point here, which is that Cody could be a fighter they could easily market. Completely different brand than what DJ offers

You know most of Conor McGregor's fights were at 145 right?

And Ronda at 135.

Weight class is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

The reality is a lot of these guys don't have the personalities that warrant a marketing push. At any weight class.

The promotion for DJ's Fox cards were way different compared to the promo for Conors Fox card with Siver

Just letting him headline the card isn't enough to build him up. I also feel like they need to build guys around him in the division. To the average fan they're just seeing DJ washing some bums. They need to promote the other guys and make them seem like real threats. Like how they've made seem that Nate Diaz is the best fighter in the world next to Conor .

This season of Tuf might be what DJ needs tho. If only they can get Benavidez to learn how to speak spanish and get Cejudo a haircut :x

Besides fighting, the most interesting thing dj does is play videogames and stream it on twitch.

yo, my brother showed me rampage on twitch a couple weeks ago. that **** is hilarious.

It's crazy how much money popular people can make on twitch. My friend watches one gamer's twitch channel and the guy and his wife both quit their jobs and he just games and streams fulltime.

I got a BA in communications and have dabbled in journalism, marketing and desktop publishing.

It's clear as day that the UFC does not market their fighters. Granted, we're talking about prize fighters but there are so many avenues they could market their fighters i.e. Twitter, snapchat, IG, YouTube, TV, print, etc.

I seen IG thots with bigger followings.

Vince already spelled it out. Besides PVZ, Sage, Conor, CM Punk, Ronda, Brock, they have done jack to truly market their fighters. There's a lot of NBA stars that I think are idiots or uninteresting but they do a good job of promoting them. Most of the interest is based of high light reels i.e. Steph's dribbling, threes or Lebron blocking or throwing down a dunk. No one going around saying Michael Jordan or Lebron are incredible promos. It's a sport, let the action speak for it self i.e. Showtime Kick, Rumble KO reel, Paige's jumping round house (I might be wrong about it whatever she used her last fight), etc.

I went on a diatribe not long ago about how they do nothing to market to the black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian demographics. Tyrone Woodley was in Straight Outta Compton, has a good look, just knocked out Robbie Lawler but I know he's boring.

And on the topic of Tyrone, his winning the championship brought out all the racists. But what do I know, UFC doesn't need to try to branch out to other demographics.

Tyron is so unknown that people still think his name is Tyrone.

I guess the company is happy with the money they're making now if they're too incompotent to even market or push more fighters.

I think a lot of it is the UFC protecting their brand.

Even now, you see moments with Conor that indicate what can happen when a fighter gets TOO big.

And they seem to always want the brand to be bigger than the fighters.

You make more money by selling/promoting the fighters. again, there's untapped markets/demographics they're completely ignoring at the moment.

They don't have the Spike deal to rely on anymore. The Fox deal was terrible.

Part of me thinks they don't market fighters because they want the UFC, the organization, to be bigger than individual fighters. If they all become Mcgregors, they'll have more negotiating power, and want more money...which the UFC has no interest in having. They're happy pushing the brand than fighters; to have people tune into the UFC because it's the UFC regardless of who's on the card.

Life doesn't work like that. A "team" or sport is always going to rely on names to sell tickets.

And a brand like Nike is solely big because it rode the back of MJ and other stars. Not to say the Nike brand doesn't have cache, it does. But athletes/stars endorsements are obviously big in that market.

Agreed on them seeming to want the brand to be bigger than the fighters. If it was the other way around then maybe they'd be forced to start paying more people what they're worth

Sure, the names sell PPVs. And the bigger the name is, the more they sell.

But the more headaches you get from that.

They seem to be able to sustain their business model with just a handful of stars that they need to properly compensate, surrounded by a rotating cast of characters.

If they have too many stars, they have to pay them all, or risk losing them, to other orgs, etc etc.

Look at a guy like Cowboy. They don't really need to market him. They can properly compensate him. Keep him happy. He can generate views.

If they pushed him into the household name he could be in 'Murica, it'd be a whole other set of headaches.

Seems like Rumble is almost the same way. They pay him well. But they don't push him into stardom because they'll have to pay him that much MORE. Even if he does generate more.

Meanwhile they have a guy like Conor who does it himself, so they deal with the headaches (UFC 200). But that's a handful of headaches as opposed to 10/20/30/40/50 of them.

It's why it's easy for them to let guys like Rory + Bendo walk.

Fighters gotta find ways to promote themselves better. I know pvz got hate for going on dwts after a loss but that's an easy way to get mainstream exposure. Might've been a mistake for her to pass on the Kickboxer remake if it turns out awesome.

I actually think Dana low key referenced some of this during the UFC sale.

Basically that him and the Fertittas were fight promoters flying by the seat of their pants.

And that having WME as part of the new ownership would help the UFC create bigger stars, because they live in that world.

Hollywood based talent agency.
