The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

masvidal took the foot off the gas the last 2 rounds....

played it too safe.

was rooting for him too

Just watched the card. He was definitely lax in the second which led to the round being scored either way. 3rd definitely went to LaQuinta. 1st to Masvidal.

Pena looked to bounce back from that horrible injury/accident. Needs about two more wins to be in title contention. She would probably lose quickly to Rhonda but then again the same level of aggressiveness, over powering and striking might work on Rhonda.

Clay Guida just took down and looked busy against Peralta. It wasn't an impressive victory. But a W is a W.

Chiesa looked solid.

And Money Mendes...what can you say? Aldo said he was the Prince of the FW division. He's right. I'd love to see an Edgar/Mendes fight. The winner would definitely be the #1 contender for the title unlike Connor.

Eh, besides Frankie, Conor was the next best deserving of a title shot. Mendes just lost to Aldo, it would make no sense to put him right back in with Frankie and Conor available. Seems like folks feel as if Conor is supposed to be several fights away from deserving a title shot. Conor was next in line almost by default, as Aldo has already defeated Frankie, Lamas, Mendes (twice).. Conor also just happens to have a huge mouth too

Mendes :x

The way he murders everybody (but Aldo) i feel like he deserves some kind of belt

Iaquinta going off at the crowd  Well said young man. **** em all :pimp:

Edit: Read the Tweet wrong, anyway..

It's not a big a robbery as some are making it out to be though, rewatching the fight. Masvidal only has himself to blame

Even as a big fan of Jorge's, I feel the same way and said it a page or 2 ago.

Frustrating as hell because....

Masvidal is such an impressive  striker. One of the best in MMA.

Again, he may have had a bad cut. I've never seen him looked wiped out like that after a fight the way he did when the final bell rung.

People saying him vs. Green as possible next fight. Worried that's a counter striking snoozer though.

I hope Masvidal gets Green or someone top 10. It's make or break time

Also, DC was saying he is very familiar with Jorge from the Strikeforce days, and said Jorge has struggled with these cuts before. He noted that this wasn't the first time he's seen Masvidal in this situation before fight night. I'm sure it didn't help being that the card was super early in the day

So folks are attributing the Masvidal loss to the weight cut?

And I don't feel like it was a huge robbery. The second is the only questionable round. It was close, so it could've gone either way.

I don't think anyone is "attributing".

But when a dude shows up to weight ins in a sauna suit, is still 1 lb. over, lights his opponent up in the 1st round, then quickly fades in Rds. 2+3, it is potentially a part of the issue.

But again, he's a counter striker and has had these kinds of lulls in fights before as well.

Eh, besides Frankie, Conor was the next best deserving of a title shot.

its true.

aldo had cleared the division already, it needed new blood.

featherweight and LHW division are suffering the same fate right now.

both champs have dominated the division for a long time, even recycled fights....

any new up and coming contenders that come along will automatically gain more interest due to the lack of current competition

people like really thought DC was going to beat jones....and DC did a good job on capitalizing on the staleness in the division

DC fought a few mediocre guys, had a expidited run to #1 contender, and showed ppl just enough to recognize hes legit, but not enough to see behind the entire curtin...he parlayed that short momentum into making ppl believe it was "his time". He did an excellent job of harnessing that idea's momentum coupled with a trending dislike for jones and applying it to his confidence going into the fight....

Mcgregor is using the same strategy against aldo right now, hes putting an all or nothing approach into his title shot. Its a gutsy, ballsy (bullish) move.

Rumble is also currently a benefactor of the staleness in the LHW divison, unlike DC and Conor Christ though, doesn't seem like hes interested in taking that angle.

we shall see

i was  at the open workouts and he was 13 lbs over two days before weigh in. He said he was gonna just run and do cardio to drop the weight. Said it as if it was a non issue. But he also didn't put too much energy in the open workout. he's a pretty tall guy for the weight class but he needs to check his ideas for cutting weight

Sounds like he does need to take a different approach to cutting weight. We've seen the issues with Hendrix, Gastellum, etc.

And I really wouldn't compare Connor to DC. It sounds like DC didn't have Cain during his JBJ camp nor had he really trained/fought for a five-round fight before. Not taking anything away from JBJ, as he's the GOAT right now.

DC was a legit wrestler and went though a who's who in the UFC/Strike Force HW division.

But I agree, have to drum up new contenders for the champion in order to draw the money/buys.

I agree and disagree with points

I disagree with you assessment of DC. DC is as legit a fighter as you're going to find, in any division. He destroyed Monson, Silva and Barnett in Strikeforce. Then dominated Mir, Nelson and Hendo. I would say that's pretty solid work there

That's just HOW GOOD Jon Jones is. DC hadn't lost a single round in any of those fights, and I wouldn't consider those guys mediocre by any stretch. Solid but not great. Not mediocre

I agree that certain divisions just need new contenders

^ cummins and hendo is HARDLY an impressive title run.....lol 2 fights?

well see who DC really is soon enough, bader fight could be interesting, the gus fight was really the one.

? Are you ignoring his other fights? He didn't get a shot at HW because he won't fight Cain but I think his fights at HW count for something and prove his worth

Bader? I think DC mauls him. Johnson and Gus though are whole different problems, DC will have his hands full with either of them

We understand the marketability of Connor and the need to drum up new contenders for Aldo but Connor was basically given the keys to the kingdom without going through a murderers row. He did win 5 straight UFC fights but only Porier was the only legit competition. They completely hopped over Swanson, Llamas, Mendez and Edgar. I get why but let's not pretend DC and Connor are the same pedigree.

nahh i definitely wouldn't say the same pedigree.....although i do feel DC the wrestler >>>>>>DC the MMA fighter

but both are in similar situations for their title shots

DC campaigned his title shot until he got it, its not like he was on a tear or anything, he just beat who they put in front of him, no real big tests, no pick em fights...similar to conor.

DC could have stayed in HW and fought some other guys though and still got paid tho

interested to see this werdum x cain fight too...

been a minute for cain

Just to clarify a few things, Swanson lost to Frankie, Lamas had just come off a loss to Aldo and same thing for Mendes. They only skipped over Frankie (which Aldo has already beat). Conor didn't skip over anyone, except Frankie

Gus was scheduled to fight Jones but had to pull out due to a torn meniscus. DC was on a tear, I don't know why you ignore what he did at HW

I don't think DC's situation is similar to Conor's though other than they were both on long win streaks

Connor didn't skip over anybody, that's true. But he didn't go through anyone either. It sucks that their division is a little shallow and Llamas, Mendes and Edgar lost to Aldo in the past year or so. But my only contention is that Connor didn't go through Swanson, Mendes, Edgar And Bermudez.

But let's be honest, UFC is a little willy nilly with their title contender selection.

Anthony Johnson had to go through Phil Davis, Lil Nog, Gustafson in the UFC and was riding a bit of a winning streak in the d leagues. The main thing is Phil Davis and Gustafson were, at the time he fought them, were top 5 contenders.

ufc needed to cash in and get that money. If the irish guy couldn't get past the top contenders then they would've lost a big payday with him fighting for the belt. That's what a big mouth gets you and dana probably also enjoys what his big mouth can do.

going to see Machida vs Rockhold in Jersey. I'm still hoping there aren't any serious injuries b/c the whole cards is :pimp:

They generally try to be logical about the contender process, but of course from time to time they break from it and go with the easy pay day. Can you blame them? Most of the time they do it right, it's usually when injuries occur they are forced to fast track someone

Why would Conor have to go through Swanson, Mendes or Bermudez when they lost their most recent fights? Plus Conor was scheduled to fight when some of those guys were already scheduled with their own opponents. The only legit beef anyone can bring up is that Frankie got screwed
