The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

weidman's chin is what allows him to withstand everything thrown at him

thinking back to their 2nd fight, it seems like anderson pretty much knew he was going to have to wear out chris's body hence the plumb

Weidman stand up is good enough to get by but by no means is he elite. He has good defense and range and well rounded but he can't stand too long with rockhold esp in kicking range, he's gotta close the distance and rough him up

How did he beat the greatest Muay Thai fighter to ever grace this planet?

Weidman doubled up on the right straight which spider wasn't expecting, then caught him blind side with the left hook

Which is great striking/coaching.

blackcease blackcease , does that mean you follow Muay Thai at all? Or just agree that it is laughable when Joe Rogan or anybody else commentating for the UFC says somebody has the best Muay Thai ever?

Kind of a combo. In general, MMA pretty much never has the best fighters of any striking discipline. You can tell just on the eye test, and on the fact that if you're drilling grappling and bjj and practicing stand-up with takedown defense in mind, you're not spending all your time working on pure boxing, muay thai, etc. Not to say some of these guys couldn't be nicer if they focused exclusively on a particular striking art, but they don't, so they aren't. So yeah I generally assume Rogan and Goldberg are all talk with that world class/best in the world stuff. Unless of course they're talking bjj guys or possibly wrestlers being world class, mma does seem to get a few high level guys from those worlds.

As far as muay thai I'm definitely not super, super knowledgeable, but I had a period a couple years ago where I was really getting into it though. I did a little light training for like 7 months and I binge watched a ******* ton of old Buakaw, Saenchai and Samart Payakaroon fights on Youtube . So yeah, just seeing what dudes like them can do, never for a second would I assume Anderson was the greatest Muay Thai fighter.

Wasn't Silva knocked out/stunned during the second Weidman/Silva fight? Yes he recovered then had the freak accident but folks acting like Weidman was in trouble on his feet.

I like JBJ's striking more than Weidmans but Chris has some good knock out power in his hands.

I'd like to see the new Werdum in 2 or more scraps with say Alistair, JDS and Cain and I'll say he's a complete fighter. He's definitely improved though.

jj has world class Muay Thai she is pretty damn good

Edit: this goes for the level of Muay Thai for foreign fighters only. One FC has Dejdamrong as a champ right now and Rambaa Somdet was Shooto champ for a while. Those are two Thais that transitioned from fighting at the top level in Thailand for years to MMA much later on.

Who? Cosmo Alexandre is the only dude that has fought MMA that legit has a great Muay Thai background, but that's because he lived and fought in Thailand for an extended period of time. I know he fought at Rajadamnern stadium a few times in addition to fighting on other more international shows in Thailand. He just beat JWP in Lion Fight which says a a lot too.

I suppose Sheymon Moraes of WSOF has decent Muay Thai as well for the same reason.

Either way like blackcease blackcease said, watch some of the top Thais and you'll see what real Muay Thai looks like.

If anybody wants the names of some Thais that are currently top level in Thailand right now, let me know.

Weren't people on sherdog mad that people thought kit cope was a great champion Muay Thai kickboxer because he was on mtv's true life? They showed him going to Thailand and winning his fight. Probably also mad he was getting Carano's guts.

We gotta shut this thread down now that there's been at Kit Cope reference

I think when we talk about great strikers in MMA, it is just among MMA fighters. MT and Boxing.

Much like BlackCease said, I've said for a while that the boxing in MMA is pretty average for the most part. With maybe a few exceptions.

So when we talk about MMA fighters with good boxing, it's just within MMA.

Werdum is complete to me. He pretty much whipped Browne's *** standing, kept up with Hunt eventually KOing him and outclassed Cain in every faucet

I don't need to see Werdum go up against Reem again because the first time they fought it could be argued that Werdum at the very least kept it even with the striking. If it wasn't for his bizarre falling to the mat he would have won that fight by decision

I would like to see Werdum avenge his loss to JDS though. Other than that his striking is exceptional now IMO. He's proven he's a complete fighter

Reem is washed AF b

Reem with no juice sucks

I have Jones and Werdum as the most complete followed by lawler

dude..jones has a ******* white belt in BJJ, how crazy is that?

thats my thing about jones, hes so good just based off pure ability...I mean he has a wresting base, and his striking is unreal, but its not like he was an amatuer boxer or kickboxed either....

unreal.

Most complete in my opinion

MM
Aldo
RDA
Werdum

Most dangerous

Rumble
Jacare

True on Jones. I think his natural abilities, athleticism and wingspan make it look like his grappling is crazy. But in reality I don't think he's ever out grappled anyone

I need to give RDA his due, he has to be considered up there

you really break down his MMA record and you can see it...

this was a man who came in had ups and downs, had no special hype or interest, continually kept evolving and patching up his game, kept working at it and put in the work...dude is literally frankenstein right now. Its not like he rose overnight either, just kept chipping away at it, gotta respect it.

I think he's going to run through cowboy too, cant wait for that fight either

Jones has a good amount of nasty sub finishes under his belt.

And even in his fights with guys like Hamill, DC, Badrer, they didn't out grapple him.

But there isn't really a Maia/Jacare style jits player at LHW that I can think of.

Kind of why I want to see him at HW already. To see if a guy like Werdum can present some problems for him.

I thought about putting RDA as well. But I'm really just catching up on him to be honest after the crazy run he's been on and he's another one who's submission skills I can't recall seeing.

ayyyy lmao

I'm thinking Weidman takes it, easy.

I think it won't go to the ground and in my opinion, that's in the chris' favor. Watching Rockhold's previous fights, his stand up defense isn't really good at all. He get's tagged quite a bit. Weidman has power and very underrated striking. It looked to me like Anderson had nothing on the feet for him 2 fights. Dicking around or not.

Also,

anybody in here practice any martial arts?

My moms just got robbed in her own driveway the other night so I'm going to sign the both of us up to take some Muay Thai classes. Not going to front, lightweight nervous.
