Having largely trained with Rutten, he'd more accurately be a Dutch style kickboxer, which is great in its own sense.  It's just not Muay Thai and he never accomplished anything in the world of Muay Thai (K-1 Max was world level kickboxing at times, but not Muay Thai).  Even the elite Dutch/European fighters end up fighting top Thais (occasionally in the Thai's actual weight class), sometimes even under full Thai rules.  

Having lived in Thailand for 4 years with a little over three of them dedicated to Muay Thai, I just can't get down with a lot of MMA dudes that claim Muay Thai.  Even more so now that there are events when you are getting to see some true Muay Thai talent in the US in full Thai rules events.  I cringe when commentators talk up MMA fighters' Muay Thai skills.  Don't get me wrong, there are unbelievable strikers in MMA with many using striking adapted from Muay Thai, but it just isn't the same.

I understand where you're coming from on the pretentious angle given my views. It's just a different perspective and I don't mean to be pretentious. I actually avoid the Muay Thai community in the states for that reason, the die hard fanboys drive me nuts.

Edit: Hands down best Muay Thai in MMA is Cosmo Alexandre.

Shogun has gotta be one of the most inconsistent fighters in the UFC. Sucks because I used to be a huge fan of his but it's tough to really support him these days.

That was spectacular and more than that we got to see 2 of best representatives of the MMA old guard fight. That was a classy fight.

Furthermore they both still got what it takes.
