The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

I can't believe they never did that fight. It would've been hyped. Melendez/Sanchez was a great fight (in the last round).

McGregor getting that can push right now. They need to keep him away from deep waters. Edgar, Melendez, Swanson, etc would eat him alive. Aldo is going to give him a free rhynoplasty, lol.

Damb, I'm not saying Conor is the NEXT thing but you guys really don't think much of him do you

I'll wait til he faces a true wrestler to say he'd get washed by them and I think Aldo and McGregor would be a nice match, not giving overly favorite odds to Aldo yet. McGregor should blast Siver though if he's as good as I think he is

It's not to say he's not entertaining in his smack talk (it's very basic but effective and borrows from Ali, the Rock, Flair, etc).

Here is the UFC's FW Top 10:

1 Chad Mendes
2 Frankie Edgar
3 Ricardo Lamas
4 Cub Swanson
5 Conor McGregor
6 Dustin Poirier
7 Dennis Bermudez
8 Nik Lentz
9 Charles Oliveira
10 Dennis Siver

A) He hasn't fought the top four competitors but is earmarked to get a title shot. Whereas, Frankie Edgar beat the #1 or #2 competitor yet isn't fighting for the title.

B) His base seems to be striking. Many have questioned his wrestling offense and especially defense. Edgar and Mendes are both great wrestlers for their weight. Edgar would probably GnP and jab McGregor to death.

C) Aldo has other worldly striking. But he could get peaced out like Barao.

Basically, we're all saying there is a huge hype train by the UFC but McGregor hasn't been tested.

That's the thing though, what makes folks think McGregor would get worked by a wrestler? Not saying what will happen because what do we have to go off making judgments either way? Trust me, I want to see him get tested by a wrestler I'm just saying it seems like folks are pretty confident he'd get dominated by wrestlers.

Aldo's striking is obviously on another level but Mendes and Frankie have been able to get their shots in. Aldo isn't untouchable by any means.

I hear you on all of those points BTW, which we have all talked about to death, I just figured that was already all assumed

Everyone is saying that McGregor would get wrecked by wrestlers because thats what other fighters are saying. Just today Thiago Tavares said if UFC put McGregor up against a wrestler his unbeaten UFC record and hype would done.

ufc needs to cash in before better fighters expose him as mediocre.
Mediocre is harsh language, but the UFC is definitely milking the Conor hype train with all the FS1 promos and floating the title shot idea in Dublin no less.

If McGregor has the foresight to match the bravado, he's addressing his wrestling and takedown defense in particular. Similar to Gustafsson training with a top-notch wrestler like Davis knowing the "Bones" fight was looming. Aldo, Mendes, and Frankie are all capable of putting "KoD" on his back. McGregor's only 2 losses are by submission, albeit much earlier in his career. Conor allegedly just received his brown belt in BJJ, but let's be honest, he's not out-grappling the likes of Aldo, Cub, Edgar, or Lamas.

Mcgregor is far from mediocre...

as far as title shots go...

I mean generally speaking i think more people would rather want to see aldo x connor opposed mendes or edgar, again.

Sure edgar is prolly most deserving, mendes should have to fight again for contention but a rematch would be a good draw.....but give the fans what they want...

people want to see if conor is legit.....and if so, how legit. He talks a big game, all of us MMA fans want to see him back it up...a fight against a poirier or a siver is not going to settle it.

conor x aldo would accurately gauge where conor is at in the division and set the tone for "remataches" (being aldo beats connor)

You gotta shake up the division or it will get stale....no one wants to see rematches or trilogies unless they were really close fights...

aldo smashed edgar and mendes fairly easily, not once was aldo in trouble. Edgar laying on Aldo the last 2 rounds was futile as hell.

IDK, sometimes UFC fighters have some opinions that are just... terrible. Not saying what they're saying is wrong about Conor though. My point is, we honestly don't know how he'd fare against wrestlers and don't have much to make judgments on

Also, to call Conor mediocre? Destroying Brimmage, Brandao and Poirer means you're mediocre? Dominating Holloway as well? That's at least a solid up and comer

Conor is a great athlete and seems like one of those guys that picks things up super fast.

If his TDD isn't where it needs to be right now i imagine he'll bring it up to speed soon enough.

They already have the ufn 59 promos is all Mcgregor. Too bad the ufc got stupid luck and booked the event the time the pats play in afc championship.

I meant they're currently doing all they can to capitalize on this guy. Hope Siver can spoil title shot plans by beating him somehow.

I never said McGregor had no shot against wrestlers. I said specifically Mendes and Edgar, who combine solid striking with take downs.

UFC should get tested for recreational drugs if they don't pit Aldo/McGregor. The $$$ is in that fight. 2015 is about that money with the signing of Punk, Cormier/Jones, Silva/Diaz, etc.

Pettis always had a smug arrogance about him but can't hate on it if he backs it up and with style

It's rare to hear the normally reserved dos Anjos say a bad word about anybody, however this time around, he's confident enough in his chances that he recently told Brazilian media, "I knocked Ben Henderson out and I'll do the same with Pettis." To that, Pettis' reply is simple: come try it.

"Benson Henderson is not even close to being on my level in striking, and neither is Rafael dos Anjos," Pettis said. "His striking, to me, he's a decent striker, but when I look at him I'm not afraid of his striking. His jiu-jitsu as well. His wrestling is decent. I mean, I just feel like I'm a bad match-up for him. The things that he thinks he's good at is where I'm way better than him at.

"I'm going to finish the fight," Pettis added. "I don't know exactly how. My last few fights were submissions so I'm due for a knockout. But if he thinks he's going to stand there and bang with me, then I think this fight will definitely end in a knockout, and I don't see it going out of the first round. I mean, even though Melendez got me into the second, I actually fought that fight a little safe. Even though it didn't go so long into the second round, I just fought it safe. I was inching along out there, but I think now I'm back at it. I don't think I need more than five minutes to take this guy out."

Anthony's main issue has been injuries. He's very talented. He subbed Benson (not even discussing the Showtime Kick) and Melendez. He gave that horrible kick to Cerrone' which separated his body from soul.

Honestly, Khabib is the #1 contender. That's who I wanted to see fight the champ.

That right there is what its all about. Because of injuries, suspensions, etc, 2014 was a bad year for UFC. They have a bunch of people saying UFC is dying, the ppv model is done with, and S&P downgrading their credit rating. Thats why we're getting Silva/Diaz, maybe Silva/185 champ, Dana talking about Lesnar and GSP's return, and why I wouldn't be shocked if we get GSP/Silva or even Cyborg/Rousey.

People always talk about the NFL and its prescription drug problem, but I never really thought about fighters having to deal with it. At least until reading that interview Silva just did where he talked about addiction and painkillers. Unlike him, I'm sure a lot of these dudes keep taking pills.
"I thought that I was getting used to the pain but I wasn't. I hope to not experience that anymore. I don't wish that for anyone. It was terrible. I'm fine now but there were months of much pain. There were a lot of strong antibiotics that I had to take to end the pain. I started to take and the pain disappeared. When I wasn't feeling pain, I wanted already to take the pills, that was the point that I stopped taking them. I wasn't addicted but I was feeling myself depressed, the medicine was making me sleeping. I decided to stop, to avoid getting addicted. I started to fill my bathtub with ice. The pain came and I got into the ice. Pain? Ice! Then I got better."

Pettis is a beast. Currently my favorite fighter to watch. I would read articles on mmajunkie about him and commenters still reference his fight with guida as the resson he would lose to khabib. His wrestling and grappling has improved tons since then. Would be a damn tough fight though since khabib would try to smother him for 5 rounds.

I remember my boys only knowing about UFC and being like... "Is this their minor league!? These guys are more fun to watch!"

RIP WEC but it lives on in BW, FW and LW divisions.

Khabib is a beast. He got that division shook. Can't wait for him to come back from his injury.

Would've also liked to see Pettis/Edgar.

UFC is going to get them dollars but the over saturation issue is still going to be a problem. But they definitely starting the year off with a bang. McGregor/Siver, Gustafson/Johnson and Silva/Diaz (is there another fight on that card lol...okay there are).

I think the issue is the two Fight Nights following UFC 183. UFC 184 and 185 could've probably benefited with stacked cards by canking those cards.

Anyone who was in WEC I'm pretty much a life long fan of

God the WEC was

Loving the WEC love in here....they came in and took over the lightweight division, i mean Cowboy, Henderson, Pettis all top 5.

Look at Mighty mouse, Cruz, Benavidez, Mendes, Condit, the list goes on.... some of the top p4p fighters.

Soooo many memories, miss that ****.

Hell even guys like Varner, Bowles, Torres kept me

I mean there's just too many guys from the WEC that made so many cards epic. Didn't even know what I was witnessing at the time

Too many epic memories, moments that just had me

Faber coming out to California Love, hair in corn rows was one of my earliest WEC memories

The ultimate though was once Aldo came over. I had no idea who this guy was, I was just getting into MMA probably around 07 or 08. There was seriously no feeling that compares to watching this guy fight back then. I was nervous for all of his opponents' lives. Like, I legit was concerned I was going to witness something horrendous. It happened against Cub Swanson

Strikeforce was right up there with the WEC though for me. I remember my first ever fight was Phil Baroni vs Frank Shamrock

what a way to start it all

Jesus I miss those days when I was just learning everyone and getting attached to fighters who one day would become the best in the world. It was always a question with the WEC guys. They made it
