The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

I was gonna say, I don't think I've ever seen an armbar applied at that angle. It was kind on an armbar/shoulder lock hybrid.

I smell another TUF: Rousey vs Tate coming to build hype for their 3rd fight. Not a lot of ppl wanna see a 3rd fight but Tate has been the only fighter that was competitive with Rousey. Their 2nd fight lasted longer than all of Rousey's other fights in UFC combined.

At this point anything is possible

Correia, Tate, Eye, Holm are the possibilities

They could make Tate v the winner of Kaufman/Davis

I think Tate would actually deserve another title shot if she could beat one of those women, or perhaps a rematch with Cat

On one note, I'm looking forward to this season of TUF. I didn't know the heads of the 2 gyms disliked each other so. I know some of the fighters get along OK with each other.

On the other note, just saw this on Fightland. Jack Slack is easily my favorite combat sports writer.....

Can't fault Rousey's brilliance, but when her opponents keep giving her clinches so easily by either charging her (as Zingano did) or standing still and trying to knock her out with punches (as Alexis Davis and Miesha Tate did), it's hard to see anyone beating her. It's often oversimplified to “armbar defense” or “elite judo defense” being what's needed, but prevention is far more important than cure. Avoid the clinch for as long as possible and don't attempt to stand and bang when you do strike should be chief among the concerns of all Rousey opponents, no matter what their skill level on the mat or in the clinch.

Frankly, Rousey seems to find an armbar from every scramble. It might well be worth her opponents considering, when she does inevitably get her clinch, pulling guard. If there's one thing judoka tend not to be as good at, it's passing the guard. Half of Rousey's success, according to many observers and her own mother, who lays it out in her excellent book, is landing from her throws in excellent position to attack the arm.

In the co-main event, Holly Holm faced Raquel Pennington. It was never going to be a great fight, it was Holm's first real step up in competition. Holm fought off every takedown attempt with ease, and landed good knees from the clinch, but her work on the outside was not what we're used to. Every time Holm attacked with punches she would finish her combination, then drop her hands (perhaps concerned about a takedown attempt) and get hit clean with strikes.

The usual Holm high kicks were present, but absent were the low kicks and body kicks which allowed her to land them. What resulted was Holm easily fighting off takedown attempts, and kicking into Pennington's guard for three rounds. No-one was impressed, but why should they have to be? Holm had never fought a credible opponent in mixed martial arts and she had to meet her first in the co-main event on a UFC pay-per-view. If you were expecting a ready made world beater, sure you'd be disappointed, but if you wanted to see how a boxer fought off the takedowns of a legitimate opponent, you would be happily surprised.

He touches on some of the thoughts I have on what MIGHT make Holm/Rousey at least more competitive than Ronda's last few fights.

He said he really believes she can beat 50% of the guys in the division just because her arm bar is literally the best in the world male or female and she can pull it from anywhere.

But he also qualified it by talking about a female boxer from back in the day who was dominating women at every level, then fought an average to good dude in an exhibition and got creamed. Then he talked about physiology, testosterone, etc. He said if Ronda can take a punch from a dude then she'd legit be a force in that division but he doesn't know that she could.
He had to have been talking about Lucia Rijker. I believe she is the only legit female fighter that has shareda ring with a guy that actually was a fighter, albeit a nobody with average skill.  And it was a muay Thai fight, but no elbows were thrown.

They did a show a while back where they tested her punching power versus a dude, but you'll see she is wearing puncher's gloves.

The world doesn't need another season of those 2 being mean girls to each other. Tate is tough as hell but she definitely fought with a stupid strategy or just straight up ignored her coaches her 2nd fight with honda. Probably an ego thing too the way she wanted to show she could outgrapple her.

ridiculous arm bar aside, the way Rhonda reversed position almost immediately after Cat started taking her down was just mind blowing. can't stand her but god damn she really is in a class of her own

When Ronda finally faces an opponent who tries to stand up and fight from distance, everyone will see That Ronda's work in the gym on her stand up game has basically made her unbeatable. Unless a legit one punch KO artist is brought Into the UFC.

Btw I'm notbsure if that "bum rush" was cat's plan or her trainer laid that out as plan of attack but that was basically theeeee dumbest thing I've seen in boxing/UFC in quite some time.
Either her coach should be fired or she is lost her ******* mind and just tried some dumb ****.

Watched the PPV.

Ellenberger had a nasty choke. Man, Josh was foaming at the mouth.

Holly Holms should get another 2-3 fights before talks of a title shot are entertained. Her strikes are Diaz like pitter patter (no power). Her foot work was solid. But she definitely needs seasoning.

Who could've been a challenger if she didn't have that training accident was Juliana Pena. She must have pissed somebody off during sparring.

The disparity between Rhonda and the other females is pretty wide right now. At the moment, we'll never see her stand up tested or her ground game/BJJ.

Lol. It would actually be awesome. Her cattiness versus his crap talking. Stand up he's got it. But if it hits the ground, Rhonda bring home another arm.

But Rhonda has gone on record that if she could fight a male, it would be Brian Carraway. The heat between the two is crazy.

She baits carraway so easily. She tweeted that she would beat him and like an idiot he responded and said he would give her that work. Then I think honda and her mom or somebody else responded and said he was a jerk for saying he would beat up a woman.

Ronda talks tough and while I respect it, I also wouldn't feel sorry for her when or if she ever gets humbled something viscous

Lol. Rhonda's mom would've been a beast if she was young. That lady is intense and crazy.

She probably judo throws people on concrete for fun still.

Was that honda's sister with her mom? Anyone know if she does judo too?

I'd love to see her try one of her judo throws and fail miserably.

No one talks like he talks, no one tinks like he tinks, and no one moves like he moves.

Ronda's Iggy Pop looking wretched last night too.

Aye. What was I tinking. I'll Neva Eva forget the notorious one. He's com'ing for dat belt Aldo. Keep shinin' it up for 'I'm.

Rhonda's mom has a death stare worse than Clint Eastwood. I know her daughter is a professional journalist.
