The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- UFC 300 ON NOW

Interested to see who pettis gets next.....now that his cloak of invincibility has been removed....theres a big target on his head, hes got some legit challenges ahead to get back to the top.
There's growing fear the lightweight titleholder is cursed. Since winning the 155 belt in August 2013, Pettis defended the strap successfully only once. Now RDA is dealing with a looming MCL procedure. Also for those questioning "Showtime's" heart or toughness, he suffered and concussion during the fight and received 7 stitches. Never did I see his determination waver. He was beaten by a better man Saturday night.

A lot of the top 155 guys are tied up. RDA has the belt. Khabib vs. Cerrone for #1 contender. Eddie and Gil in Mexico. Johnson called out "Bendo" post-fight. You could give Pettis a moderate contender coming off a loss, like Khabilov. Or throw him right in with Green, who was supposed to fight Masvidal next month before pulling out. I would love to see a kickboxing exhibition between "Showtime" and Barboza, both coming off losses. Or perhaps Jury, "Punk" Thomson. 155 is so damn deep.
I think Pettis gets Nate Diaz next. Both coming off a loss and they really dislike each other.

Pettis got straight washed man. One of the most pathetic performances from a Champion defending his belt that i can remember
he did get beat, but not washed. I can think of a bunch of pathetic performances by champions .. Hell even in that card you had JOANNA beating Carla's ***. Joanna seems like the Rousy of the straw weight division.

Damn, people talking trash about Pettis now. RDA fought unreal that night. You probably could've hit him with a baseball bat and he wouldn't have flinched. Pettis got dominated but he never stopped going for his offense.

Khabib trolls so hard

"It's just funny," Nurmagomedov said between chuckles. "Cowboy is fake. I don't think so he's really cowboy, I think he's fake. He all the time drink, drunk. I don't think so he's really cowboy. I'm really cowboy. I'm mountain guy. I'm training camp all my life, I'm wrestling with the bears. I'm really cowboy. He's drunk guy. I am Dagestan cowboy, 100-percent.

"You know why he's a little bit nervous?" Nurmagomedov added. "Because I say truth. I say truth. I no say trash talk, I say truth, and he's a little bit nervous. He needs wrestling, he needs wrestling partners. But it's okay. After two months we have fight, we have crazy fight, and when cage close, he understand, ‘Wow, this guy's crazy. Why I take this fight? Why I take this fight?' Because I want to smash this guy. He say I won't smash this guy? [He say,] ‘I kick his ***.' Okay. 23rd, May. 23rd, May."

 khabib keeps it real :pimp:

Pettis finna MURDER Nate. I don't like the state of the Diaz brothers right now. They quit on MMA for real or at least it seems like they don't care about trying to become champ  anymore

That would be an easy win. A dangerous fight for Pettis would be Michael Johnson, but I think that would definitely make sense for a new #1 contender fight

Where does the animosity originate from?

Sign me up. Both coming off a loss to the same man. Pettis and Nate both draw a significant amount of fans. Nate wouldn't really test Pettis' hopefully improved takedown defense though. Would be fun to watch in the stand-up from a technical perspective.

Joanna seems like the Rousy of the straw weight division.
Joanna better not get complacent. She barely squeaked by Claudinha, who trains with Nova Uniao and holds a well-respected black belt in BJJ under Pederneiras. Unlike Carla, Claudia is no slouch with her boxing. You could argue she took the two rounds necessary to win off Joanna in their first fight. Joanna showed great takedown defense against Esparza, but the next step is improving her jiu-jitsu. Rose Namajunas is another serious contender at strawweight. Raw and inexperienced, but she fights crazy/wild with a karate and tae kwon do background. Then there's everyone's darling, for her looks, PVZ. She has a stiff test next month in Newark against a practiced kickboxer, Felice Herrig.

Damn, people talking trash about Pettis now.
Pettis is fortunate to have Ben Askren in his Roufus camp, one of the best MMA wrestlers in the sport along with Hendricks, Cormier, and Weidman.

Yeah Pettis should demolish Nate but I wouldn't be shocked if they try to give him at least 1 "easy" fight to build him back up. Not only is he gonna be part of their Reebok campaign but UFC had big plans to enter Puerto Rico and all of it was based on both Pettis brothers.

No clue where the animosity comes from but theres a lot of hate between them. Supposedly they even got into some skirmish at a nightclub in Vegas a few years ago. Diaz has been saying a bunch of **** about Pettis for a while and Pettis kept calling him out but he was champ and there was no way UFC was giving Diaz another title fight after his holdout and losses.

I wouldn't mind seeing them make Pettis v Diaz, but this is one of those rare occasions where I don't necessarily think they have to match Pettis against an opponent coming off a loss

Who do they match Michael Johnson against next? I think that would be an awesome fight for Pettis

one thing about the ufc, you can talk all you want, and in the end you will probably fight that guy some time in the future.

I have a feeling Bendo might F around and stay at 170.
He's been awfully quiet about his next opponent, strangely so. I'm sure it's a difficult decision with Crouch whether to stay at welterweight or jump back to the division he was champ in. I would love to see "Bendo" fight Aldo at lightweight one day.

I was amazed how effectively Johnson pressure fought Barboza in Brasil. That closed distance didn't allow Barboza to let off with his trademark kicks. Plus Johnson has the wrestling background to give opponents like Pettis trouble.

Nate keeps getting sacrificed. I'd, personally, give him an easier challenge after his weigh in issues and poor performance against RDA.

The Diaz Brothers are so volatile/unpredictable.

I thought Pettis fought admirable. His eye was cut in the first. You could hear him tell Duke he couldn't see out of it in between the 4/5. RDA had a few submission attempts and he managed to stop them. He never stopped fighting despite being woefully outmatched.

Besides the looming questions about PEDs, RDA masterfully executed a solid strategy to mitigate his opponents strengths.

It was almost as dominating as Cracked out JBJ taking down DC several times,

Reem's chin has definitely eroded, which is why Wink and Jackson wanted him moving and cautious even late against Roy. Nelson accused Overeem of running, which I perceive merely as smart fighting. Just like Condit's plan against Diaz.

Deciding factor could be Reem's offensive wrestling versus JDS' takedown defense. We all know Overeem has lethal ground and pound from top position, if he can secure it on "Cigano."
I actually think Cigano might have the wrestling advantage. He took Carwin down twice i believe with ease and defended all of his takedowns. Against Cain he did well defending, it was just the constant pressure and accumulation of strikes and takedowns that wore him out.

If this was roided out reem it might be harder to gauge just cuz of the size difference

watching a rerun of ufc 154 right now and dos anjos fighting bocek. Physically looks much smaller but skillset wise looks to be throwing the same strikes, setups, footwork, etc.

Bendo lost to both Pettis and RDA, don't know if it makes sense for him at 155 right now.

Has there been any news at all on TJ Grant? Is he still dealing with concussion issues, coming back, or retiring?

^ Bendo and Michael Johnson both agreed to fight each other on Twitter yesterday. Now it just needs to be made official by the UFC.

I can see Cowboy and Khabib being a #1 contender fight. Cowboy has won like 6-7 in a row and Khabib is undefeated.

Bendo has recently lost to Cowboy (sort of), RDA and Pettis.

I'd let the winner of Khabib/Cowboy get a title shot (which wouldn't be for awhile).

And see how things shake out with the division Alvarez/Melendez, Pettis/Whoever, Johnson/Bendo.

If cowboy wins, he's #1 contender. It's hard to market rda but cowboy can talk, has a personality, marketable enough to carry a PPV and easy to deal with. He probably fight at the July ufc if he could.

Might just be a #1 contender fight
how the hell would that be a number 1 contender fight? Ben just lost to the current champ by knockout and the ex champ by submission in the first. He's nowhere near a title shot.

Im also wondering about Tj Grant, he was on a roll

It's obvious Khabib v Cowboy is the #1 contender fight at the moment

A Bendo v Johnson match could be the next #1 contender fight

There's nobody else in the LW division that could stake a better claim
