Working a 9-5 sucks hOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS

you're also in high school . I doubt many serious investors would take a high school kid serious regardless of what neighborhood they come from. It's a good goal though but it may not be feasible right off the bat. Try and study something in college relevant and get internships and/jobs in the industry you're interested in. That'll set you up for starting your own business a lot better than trying to buck the system
trying to go the path you just told me would make me spend money that I could use on other things. The business in starting isn't a typical type of business from an average teenager trying sell lemonade or something of that nature. The thing about me and my business plans is that I already have a plan, marketing plan, and logical goals. From the way I carry myself and the way I talk you wouldn't think I was in high school even though I'm bout to graduate. My goal was to avoid college altogether cause I feel as though it's a bit primitive in teaching technique and overall goal. The goal in trying to reach is not having to work for someone else. Currently I work at kids footlocker and although it's a nice job I strongly dislike my manager and my pay rate is horrible for the amount of effort o put in to my work.

I work three days a week, but it's death. I work 12h Day shift at the hospital as a RN. I get up at 5:00am, out the door by 5:30, hospital by 6:00am to study my patients. Shift starts at 7, until 7pm, I always stay after to chart. It's so hectic that I don't even check my phone while working. Leave around 8pm on a good day. Pick up food, home by 9pm. Eat, in bed by 10pm for 7 hours of sleep (not enough), for work the next day :x .

Shut up

I'd kill for that

Im currently 22 and about to graduate college this weekend..Not too sure with what to do with this degree in communications but this thread has def opened my eyes to what to expect from the "real world". I can already see how much I am going to miss college .

i dont know how any of you guys can work those office jobs...

i cant even stand it when i have nothing to do at my job for 10 mins.

i work setting up concerts and shows for 25 an hour, im 26 and have been doing stuff like this since i was 18.

started off in a theater in my town as a stagehand with no experience and just picked up alot of info from the people i met along the way.

i love what i do, and im glad i found my calling.

i feel blessed that i dont have to work outside in the heat digging ditches or flipping burgers, i've taught myself alot about audio equipment too.

i worked at a million dollar show operating the audio console, which usually requires a degree in my field.

did some of you guys just work these jobs because you feel there is nothing else that will pay well? or are these kinds of jobs really necessary to move up in your field?

the diversity on NT is awesome btw.

we set up a fake ice rink its made up of 72 sheets of thick plexi glass then they put this graphite powder that makes the surface really slick.
and the chicks skating are   every weekend its a different kind of show.
from comedians, singers, setting up projection screens for PPV boxing matches its always something new.

one day i can be operating a camera and another day helping backup dancers get undressed  .

took these pics yesterday.

What kind of info do you have about audio equipment fam? You ever thought about doing mixing and mastering for a studio or having your own services and selling it?

The only people in society who are free from life's shackles are those with their own business.

Working 9-5 in an office staring at a computer screen all day and being told when to go for lunch and when to go home is not cool. ur a slave.
You still have bills to pay and clients to answer to. Plus the income is probably less steady. I don't see how that's any more liberating.

Have a kid. If you really think about it and you're smart/responsible, the motivation to take care of your seed helps give life a better meaning...

Wake up 6am. Get dressed, showered, ironed, bkfast made, lunch packed and make sure son is good and ready and im out by 7-715. Drop son off at daycare, drive 25 miles to work.

Out of work at 5, pick up son from daycare, then either hit the gym or relax at home, go over school work with son, drink a beer, eat dinner a watch a movie or whatever, smash the wife then off to bed.

And still have time to do my hobbies and have side hustles that bring in xtra cake. And I always get 7-over 8 hours of sleep.

9-5 aint that bad.

Where do you live?

Impossible to go 25 miles at 5 pm in Los Angeles, I live 27 miles from work, and it takes me an hour and half home everyday. By the time I get home from my 8:30-530, I'm exhausted from driving.

I just started a new job at a new company where my hours are 9-5 but I actually like it.

I understand that sitting down all day and being at a desk sucks and there are times when I am in a lull and want to get away but some people like the white-collar environment rather than the blue-collar environment.

I think it's the culture of your company. The place that I work at now is a start-up company in Boston where it's more "modern" and "innovative". I get an hour paid lunch and it takes me about 20 minutes to actually eat lunch. I take that time to go for a walk and I play basketball because there's a court right behind my building.

As long as you are happy doing whatever it is that you're doing, go for it. Some people just like the office environment. But the office environment will always have pretty girls.

Maryland.
Sometimes it take me 1 and a half to get to work cause these idiot MD people cant drive. But im usually at work within 45 mins. The latest I get home is 630 and that includes picking my son up.

LA traffic :x I can only imagine

id hate to have that lunch hour scheduled into my day in addition to the 8 hours you are already there...

we can just do a 8 hours and role out and for someone like me who a) brings food and b) eats at my desk, i can **** of there after 8 hours...

an you get 7-8 hrs of sleep an you wake up at 6am

your day seems pretty damn busy, how long is your gym routine?

also figure in commute times

time for hobbies and side hustles?

yea ok, that schedule seems pretty stagnant

Being from Nyc and moving to a slower paced environment you realize you can do alot within 16hrs.
Also being from Nyc, you know how to get things done faster. Even though im at work 8hrs, I probably work 5hrs. All other times im researching, making xtra bread and browsing the web. I rarely step out the office for lunch cause I bring my food, so thats more time to BS. Sometimes I hit up the mall for 2hrs and grab a drink.

Im at the gym 1hr maybe 1hr 15mins. Ive never stayed longer unless im prepping for a show or talking it up with people. Weekends I get my hobbies done and sometimes the weekdays.

yo hold up, that dude who works 3pm to 11:30 am, thats like 20 hours

I work in DC, but live about an hour away. I don't want to drive, so I take the bus there. I start work at 7, so I have to wake up at 4 to get ready for the bus at 5. I get to work around 6:30 then work nearly non-stop until 3:45 to catch the bus home.

By the time I get home around 5:30, I just want to eat and sleep. :smh:

You're local here? Would've never guessed that
I moved into the area in late June.

I work from 7am - 3pm . The job is ok but I work with some good people. We laugh, talk about dumb ****, listen to music. I do feel like a zombie at times but I refuse to be miserable at my job. I just can't live like that. Some times I just put my headphones and zone out. Whatever I got to do to make the time go faster and still put in work. I go home chill for a bit, hit the weights at about 6:00, shower at 9, relax some more and go to sleep between 12 - 12:30 and get up at 6. Good thing my job is only 10 mins from my place.

I felt like that when I was your age.  Wanting to work a dream job in Marketing which I graduated in.  Im 29 now working as a finance manager in a car dealership.  My hours are whacky and all over the place but my goals have changed which are  Provide for my kids and gain as many assets as possible.  Is my work repetitive?  Yes.  And its far from a dream job but I want to retire before im in my early 50s so this is what I gotta do.

Turst me priorities will change.  I am over the days of how my job is.  Now its about how good my health benefits are, how much money I can make and how I can make it easier for me to make more money.  And to try to give the least amount of that money to the government.

I've been working a 9-5 for a year straight now... the amount of time that has passed so quickly is ******g alarming... And i'm one that goes out frequently i live in NYC so their's plenty to do but it's still crazy at how bland this **** could get. Don't get me wrong i'm grateful that i have a job because many don't even have that but man 30+ years of this is like dying a slow death.

This year i just wanna save as much as possible and set myself up in a position to make money for myself. There are good arguments on both sides but America in general builds you from the second you enter a school building to be a worker, the earlier you realize that this isn't how life is supposed to be lived the better, however that wall of fear is instilled a nd that's slowly what i'm crushing everyday once that fear is gone you can truly live.
this is the most accurate statement in this thread...

This. Huge pet peeve of mine. Used to work an 8-5 with an unpaid 12-1 lunch hour. We'd go out to eat, go home for a bit, come back, and be in a food coma. Thankfully the boss didn't GAF and would let us lay down, smoke cigarettes, go on multiple "small" breaks, and run errands on the clock.

lol that itis

I work an 8-5 at an architectural engineering firm and there are many things I enjoy about my job, but there are also things I wish could be different.

Pros:

- good benefits / great pay / secure job

- holidays / PTO

- relaxed (downtime to surf the web)

- 4 minute drive to home so I go home for lunch and watch Sports Center

- confident about my skills and knowledge on the subject matter

Cons:

- far away from my hometown & friends (relocated here)

- days where I'm just counting down the minutes to get out of there

- not a pathway to my real passions

I just gotta say I am grateful for having a job and for those who gave me a shot when other companies I interviewed for wouldn't.

This is probably not going to be where I'll be forever, but for the moment I am happy I can provide for myself and not have to rely on others to pay my bills, keep me fed, etc.

It's also a great feeling to know I can give back to my parents who've helped me progress to this point in my life. Yeah it's not my dream job, but in my perspective it could be ALOT worse.
