Political Correctness: a social censorship

What ever happened to am1x....?

Bill Maher had a segment about this the other night. Chris Rock and Seinfeld don't even play college campuses anymore.

I feel like political correctness is parallel to the rise of the internet.

In real life, people are much more PC nowadays. They are afraid to be even slightly confrontational.

For example, some kid at the library was watching something on a tablet with the volume up too high. Everyone was too pc/meek to say anything. I saw some lady get up to go find a library staff to tell them.

Finally, an old man walked by, heard it, and immediately (but politely) asked him to turn it down.

That's (to me) the sometimes negative effect of overt political correctness. It is when inside people feel the same, but due to protecting feelings, harmony, meekness, wtv you want to call it, they are afraid to talk about something.

see to me that not being politically correct. thats just being non confrontational. to me, being politically correct is expressing your views, whatever they are, in a thought out, non crass, and offending way. in my people who oppose political correctness dont want to be forced to think before they speak. it takes the sting out of saying something insulting or hateful which to those saying things like that, probably takes the satisfaction out of it.

a short concise statement like "black people are criminals" turns into "african americans are more criminally inclined". the latter statement invokes questiong, while the other is just polarizing.

PC has made this country terry cloth soft. People will not accept your brutally honest opinion if they don't want to.

Like what? I'd like an example. My mind is stuck in the present and what has been going on in the US all I can seem to associate PC with is race

I agree. But there are levels to honesty. What people also lack these days is tact. You can be honest with people but you don't have to be rude or mean about it. People take being honest and run with how they can express that honesty.

i honestly think people just want the right to be rude. people in america have always had opposing opinions, since when has political correctness ever stopped people from presenting their views if they did it respectfully?

People can say whatever they want but you will have backlash if people don't agree.

Whether or not you can deal with the reaction to your words/actions is a different story.

If you can't handle the reaction then you should keep your mouth shut.

You're right. People will say something in the rudest possible way and try to justify by saying "I was just being honest". While it may be true, people are for it until it's their turn to be on the receiving end of the honesty.

In today's society it's considered PC to agree w/ the mainstream. For example, I'm not big on the whole Bruce Jenner thing, however, if I say that publicly, I'd be considered discriminatory, etc etc. Now to be PC, I'd have to agree with it. Being politically correct has taken on a new meaning imo.

but thats the thing, whats anyones opinion on that even matter? I think that whole situation is weird and i dont get it, but i also acknowledge that it has absolutely nothing to do with me and affects me in no way whats so ever so Bruce Jenner can do whatever he/she wants. Again to me it just sounds like be are butt hurt that they cant speak negatively or be rude about things that probably doesnt even affect them.

Yep

A lot of the talk about people being too political correct comes off as "I don't like that I can't say whatever with impunity"

If you're willing to share your views on a matter, be prepared to define them.

And maybe if you can't do that, then that should be a sign to you that the problem might be with your opinion/reasoning and not with "society"

Opinions make the world go round bro. And I feel the same way, don't get it but hey, it doesn't affect my life. Now we both just shared opinions, however, many would take that as us being mean, hateful, and not accepting of peoples decisions which is far from the case. To be politically correct is to give an opinion that aligns w/ the popular opinion of society.

DL Hughley caught a lot BS for his opinion on Bruc...erm...Caitlyn.

i guess thats where we disagree. for me political correctness is more about the way you deliver youre opinion as opposed to the opinion itseld. ive heard many many people express that same view, on tv and on the radio and no ones hating them for it.

No, that's what being politically correct does mean and I agree as well. What I'm saying is that society today has changed the definition of it, the same way they changed the definition of an honest opinion to being a hater.

because DL hugley clowned Caitlyn Jenner for no reason. Instead of saying he doesnt find Caitlyn Jenner attractive "In a Miss Doubtfire kind of way. Stop it," Hughley said, adding that Jenner "looks like very P.E. teacher I've ever had."

all context in my opinion. people get called being a hater when they put a negative spin on their opinion. just like what DL Hugley did^^

Nah. Being PC is a like table manners for speech. It's decorum. It is a proper way of engaging in public discourse. Any inflammatory remarks made in a public forum would be due to their absurdity rather than their rudeness and crassness.

Let's take your example. Ignoring the radical LGBT/LGBT Ally community, there is nothing wrong with just saying what you said.

@Dathbgboy: I'm not big on it. I don't understand it. Help me understand*.

That is totally fine.

What is NOT fine is saying something like "Mi nah with all these queer battyman tings. Dem fi dead! Mi cyah undastand dat one yah.

Just used a Jamaican voice because that's what I'm around.

*Understanding does not equal agreement. It just means you understand their point of view.

I thought comedians are supposed to clown people. That's what they do. DL is a comedian last time I checked. so he can't do that no more cause everyone wants to embrace Bruce in drag?

but he wasn't doing it for the sake of comedy. he was clowning her because thats how he feels. being PC doesnt mean you have to embrace anything you dont want to. embracing means actively supporting
