A Forbes article on why more kids should forgo college...

Some people like being cogs in a the wheel and having a steady corporate job.... Safe, low pressure

he's right, though. You can master a trade and start your own business...

I think we all have dreams of having our own business and doing something awesome or challenging...

But the safety net of an easy corporate job somewhat inhibits our creative and ambitious sides...

Pays well enough just to keep you from looking for an alternative...

But I still think college as a necessary evil for many jobs... And if not for anything else, an awesome experience.

This.

I feel at a certain point that once you adhere to a sense of complacency you've already stopped dreaming. There's nothing wrong with staying at a place to grow, but I always think of making forward calculated moves.

Although undergraduate degrees are a necessary evil, I feel that getting your Master's is relatively beneficial. I'm in the process and it's been a great experience thus far, especially the people you meet. Pending of what you make of it, it'll question how you perceive the world and what type of industry you truly want to work in.

it's not a hip trend, the world is just changing

the occupy wall street movement imo is what really brought questioning college to mainstream america
And how did it do that? These were the same kids that were protesting debt while walking around with the newest iPhones. Ask people who were down there what are they protesting, they couldn't tell you. Occupy movement was a joke. Please.

Prediction: A certain NTer will goggle Clifford Harris. Jr, spend the next 4 pages tearing that statement down and will activate race thread.

I don't think enough people are looking at both working for a company and starting a company as viable. I went to college and got an advanced degree. Now I'm working on my PhD in EE. Got an awesome job with great pay and full benefits. On a long day I work at most 6 hours. Have plans to start a small research firm with a couple of the other PhD students while also keeping my great job. Also, I've been investing regularly to add to my future nest egg while earning income from dividends.

Multiple streams of income is the best way to get rich in my opinion. The engineer in me won't let me justify to myself going all in on one risky business venture. Just not logical. I play it safe and I see gains. I understand that my gains are nowhere near as large as those that are fearless but I take the slow and steady approach. Small goals. I want to be making at least 100k by 30 and I'm close.

Hopefully some of you will see that you can do both. These options are not mutually exclusive. We all have 24 hours in a day. Plenty of time to do everything.

it did have small victories as far as reform in government policies. jokes don't create legal changes. actually since we're on the topic of college, it changed policies in student loans.

and more importantly it engaged millions of people in discussions of social reform/wealth distribution and opened them to it, especially younger people. and also major cable news networks brought the conversation and arguments into peoples homes. we no longer live in a country where being open to socialist ideas means you're a free market hating anti-american. it's actually the one thing that can stop the shrinking of the middle class.

and if we live in a country where 20/30-somethings shouldn't be able to afford a phone thats $200 with a plan that's pretty practical to own because of student loan debt then that just adds to the point that reform is needed.

People kill me with this starting a business crap like its just that sweet. Lol if you ain't built to sit in a classroom or work a 9-5 you def aren't built for the beast of owning your own biz. I just believe some people just aren't meant to amount to much in life. I do feel everyone has something they are good at but not everyone awill be good at something to make them wealthy. I just feel people need to do what ever it takes to be able to provide for themselves.

Getting a college degree takes work...

Learning a trade and applying it to a real life career takes work...

Starting you're own small business/venture takes work...

See the common theme here, the sense in entitlement in this new generation is appalling. Seems like kids want the college life that tv sells them, party extensively your first two years and play catch up your last two years when you are already swimming in debt.

I did my fair share of partying when I was in college, but also held down a well paying part time job the entire time. Held multiple side gigs, seasonal gigs, internships throughout my college tenure. It was hard, my GPA suffered, but personally it was worth it.

No debt, :smokin

Partying in college and loading up on Natty Light

I think there tends to be this negative stigma of partying in college is what's holding someone back. Im sure there are many college partyers with well paying jobs.

Yes and No...

Networking is huge, I've known kids that slacked their entire time in college but their network was strong which led to them landing $50k+ jobs right after college. That is not the norm though, there's a lot of luck involved in that.

The entitlement comes from the fact people were told from cradle to high school graduation college is the only way they can make money or find a job in life. Then when you get that degree you will be set for life.

I'm going to make sure when I have kids to raise them the way I was raised. Can't have money if your *** doesn't work. Experience is just as important as Education, IMO.
