Should divisions be eliminated in the NFL?

In the NBA I think so for sure, but specifically for this thread I'm asking about the NFL.

Besides scheduling and a few rivalries, what would it hurt? I'm looking in the NFC right now and one of either the 49ers, Saints or Cardinals will miss the playoffs, while a team from the NFCN will go in despite being quintessentially mediocre...Same for the NFCE, for that matter.

Sure, it might provide excitement IF the Packers make it and IF Rodgers gets back, but just as the NCAA is working towards making sure they have the absolute best crowned as Champions, shouldn't the NFL make sure that its playoffs are with the 6 best teams from each conference?

i would be against getting rid of them. the potential exists for three teams from a single division to make the playoffs, which i know is rare, but it's possible. i think you might get one or two teams that don't technically belong, but those teams do make runs now and then. but the other and main reason is the division rivalries that exist...losing divisions sort of kills a part of those rivalry games.

Probably won't happen, but yeah can't believe the Cards can be 11-5 and miss the playoffs...how many times have that happened?

NE missed at 11-5 during the cassel year...it burned

I'd say no, doesnt seem to happen too often that it needs to be changed

IMO no, and even more so because it's only a matter of time before the NFL expands the playoffs. Also as you said it's the NBA that needs to somehow blow up their system. Nine sub-.500 Eastern teams have made the playoffs since '04......and now 12 out of 15 East teams under .500 so far this year. :smh:

No, but I do think, if a wild card has a better record than a division winning opponent, that they should get to play at home in the playoffs.

i mean, it kinda sucks that the cardinals and rams are gonna be stuck behind the seahawks and 49ers, but probably could win the nfc east/afc south/afc north

no i like the division rivalries

tampa bay vs atlanta
Tennessee vs jacksonville

and honorable mention
miami vs buffalo

Its rare that a horrible team wins a division. 2010 Seahawks 7-9 team is an example but to their credit they made the most of their opportunity.

I would be cool with them giving division winners an automatic playoff birth regardless of record. However they shouldn't be guaranteed a home playoff game.

If a 9-7 team wins a division by default and they play a 12-4 wild card team. Then the 12-4 team should get the home game.

The nba does it like this. Back in 06 Denver was the 3 seed because they won a crappy division. In actuality they had the worst record of all 8 playoff teams. They played the clippers in the 3 vs 6 matchup. The 6 seed clippers got home court advantage due to having a better record then Denver.

If there was more parity this wouldnt be an issue.
I think that is more important than turning the playoff system upside down.
I dont know how that is done tho (other than draft picks and shared revenue). If i had the answer I would be the commissioner.
