Make something adventurous and not status quo because it shows you think outside the box. Also I think first dates should be about having fun and getting to know people on an intellectual level or an active level. Don't make some grandiose statement and get stuck with a $50-100 meal trying to impress somebody that no chemistry is built. Make it to were you guys are light flirting and teasing each other.
Now the second or third date( depending how you are feeling her) you should pay(even if she insist). But if you both are feeling each other myake a comment like:
"You can grab dessert"
"You get the next meal we have"
Strong statements so it shows your interest without being brash but still assertive.

I cant stress how much of a plus it is for the Cali dudes to have the beach right at their doorstep. Forget all the simpish talk, walk on the beach and something from the food trucks for a first date is CLUTCH.
